RPSC: West Coast Avengers Annual #4 - "The Power of Myth"
West Coast Avengers Annual #4 - "The Power of Myth"
Written by MikeinMke
Edited by GarganisScorpion
“Y’know,” Hawkeye quipped, “I’d say it’s good to be home – except this hardly looks like home.” The incredible archer and his Avengers teammates were quiet. It was difficult for them to process what they had witnessed. The conflict of gods and undying beings for the Infinity Gems had left them in awe and feeling, well, rather insignificant. Thanos had disappeared, seemingly in pursuit of the various possessors of the six Infinity Gems; and Mephisto, who had wreaked unimaginable damage in his attempt to subjugate multiple planes of existence with the power of the Infinity Gauntlet, had retreated back to Hell to lick his wounds.
At the same time, the Avengers felt the burden of responsibility more than ever, as they had experienced first-hand how the singular actions of one individual can affect the cosmos. Filled with such weighty and ineffable thoughts, the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes found themselves back in New York – which looked very different.
The sky was red. The light was subdued and low; it was darker than usual. While it was not cold, the sunshine was – wrong.
“Did one of those gods send us to some weird dimension?” Wonder Man pondered aloud. He and the other heroes looked around trying to identify familiar sights and locales, looking for some point of reference from the reality they knew.
“Let’s get to the mansion and gather more data,” Ant-Man suggested. He realized a moment later that he had essentially issued an order to the team – and that they had all followed immediately. Even before they reached their headquarters, they realized that local law enforcement had their hands more than full in trying to quell a sense of panic spreading among the populace.
As much as the Avengers could have used a psychic and physical break, the incredible circumstances would not allow it. The team’s global monitoring equipment indicated that the phenomenon of the bleeding sun was not limited to North America.
News reporters and scientists across the world were at a loss to explain the solar crisis. It was obvious that agriculture would soon fail on a global scale without the sun’s normal brightness and radiation. It appeared as though the sun were a clot in the sky. Moreover, in defiance of untold millennia, a full moon rose well before the sun set and stayed prominent in the night sky and most of the day.
The Avengers all scanned information sources, reading and hearing numerous reports, theories, and downright nutty ideas as to possible causes for the sun’s frightening appearance. When Moon Knight strode in, slowly and purposefully, they did not immediately register his arrival.
The winsome Wasp noticed him first. “Moon Knight!” she cried, “where have you been?! Are you alright?”
“I… we… can’t do this alone,” he began. “This is too big…”
Iron Man stepped forward. “Man, I was trying to keep mummies from sticking a spear through my armor last time I saw you; and we could have used your help trying to get the Infinity Gems. You have some nerve just waltzing in here…”
Moon Knight ignored Iron Man’s indignation and interrupted: “Even before Mephisto acquired the Infinity Gems, Apophis had been preparing,” Moon Knight reported. To himself, the hero in jet and black recalled the troubling dreams he had been having during the months prior: the blood-red moon growing in his dreaming eye, calling to him, pulling on him. (See, e.g. WCA Annual #2 of August 2007 http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=206249)
“I have…” Moon Knight paused, uncertain whether he himself believed what he was about to recount. “There is a being named Khonshu, who calls himself a god of Egypt.”
Sersi inhaled sharply at the mention of the Egyptian god’s name, and Mockingbird looked to the Eternal. Sersi did not, however, speak further.
“When you tried to intervene at the museum,” Moon Knight continued, gesturing first at Wonder Man, then at the Wasp, “you were … disturbing Khonshu’s plans.” (See WCA #31 of August 2010 http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=286373) Again, the inscrutable hero dropped his head, even as his facial expressions remained hidden in his cowl.
“Apothe-… Who’re you talkin’ about?” Hawkeye asked. He had little interest in theology, no matter the pantheon.
“Apophis is his name,” Moon Knight replied. “He usually appears as a powerful man with multiple serpent heads. He’s a sort of demon from hell.” At that, Moon Knight had to give a short, quiet laugh, for he was aware how absurd his own response sounded.
“I knew him as Apep,” Sersi interjected. She bore her raven-tressed head majestically, but her face betrayed emotions of disgust. “He allowed foul celebrations in his grove of darkness before he crossed the central sea into the land of the pyramids. I never saw him personally; the accounts of atrocious rituals in his lands were enough to keep me away.”
“Khonshu has … well, he told me, too, that Ra was killed; Ra, the ancient sun-god of Egypt,” Moon Knight said. “This might explain why the sky looks like blood.”
Each of the Avengers were reminded of the cataclysmic battle they had witnessed only the day before – assuming time had meaning in that place – wherever it was. Mephisto, empowered with the awesome might of the Infinity Gauntlet, had practically torn Ra to shreds with a vicious assault.
Sersi concurred, “Ra was head and shoulders above most other solar deities, that is true. Without Ra’s guidance and power, the sun has to struggle against its foes.”
“Foes?” Hawkeye asked. “How can the sun have enemies? I mean, it’s a ball of gas in space.”
“It is more than that,” Moon Knight replied. “It is the source of energy, beginning of light, anchor of the solar system, and symbol of life, rising anew each day…”
Something about Moon Knight was different, and Hank Pym was fairly certain that he was not the only person among his teammates to notice it. As taciturn as their ally had been in the past, the mysterious hero in jet and silver never seemed to give gods or religions any purchase – but now…
Ant-Man addressed Moon Knight, “What can we do? It seems as though you came here for help.” Hank paused as Moon Knight hesitated. “You said this was ‘too big’?”
“Ra is…” Moon Knight seemed to struggle to find the words. “He died and descended into the underworld, where Osiris tends to him even now; but Apophis has taken this opportunity to spread his evil.” Again, Moon Knight hesitated. “Khonshu … I… We couldn’t stop him, and we have to help Khonshu!” Moon Knight blurted out these last five words much more loudly and with such emphasis that the other Avengers were startled.
Mockingbird and Hawkeye exchanged skeptical glances. Wonder Man and Wasp looked concerned, while the Vision observed the interactions impassively. Sersi spoke, “Apep is an abomination. His influence must be contained.”
Ignoring the fact that Sersi had just said she had never personally seen Apophis, Ant-Man asked Moon Knight, “How can we help?”
“We have to get the Rod of Asclepius," Moon Knight said. “It’s an ancient artifact used for healing, and Osiris could use it to help Ra.”
Ant-Man nodded. He might have concentrated his studies in the natural sciences, but his knowledge of the Classics and ancient art was adequate to recall images of the scepter with its entwined serpent.
“The trouble is: it’s not just the Egyptian gods,” Moon Knight continued. “The Greeks are in a mess, too.” He shook his head. “Zeus was turned to stone,” and several of the Avengers present recalled Mephisto’s devastating attack on the Greek pantheon’s lord. “Ares grabbed power, but Pluto is helping him stay on the throne... There’s so much intrigue and back-stabbing, it makes the mafia look tame.”
Sersi nodded knowingly, and Mockingbird had to stop herself consciously from rolling her eyes. Tigra seemed to believe Moon Knight’s sincerity. “Isn’t Pluto the brother of Zeus?” she asked aloud. “So Ares is his nephew. Where is this artifact?”
“I… I think I can get us to… where we need to go,” Moon Knight replied. “A quieter room…” He turned to walk out of the room. “We have to find the Rod of Asclepius,” he concluded more quietly, as if repeating a hypnotic suggestion.
As one, the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes left their monitor room and proceeded to their conference room. The strange low, red light from the bleeding sun filtered through some clouds and barely illuminated the mansion’s hallways.
“Form a circle,” Moon Knight commanded. Ant-Man noticed the authority Moon Knight exercised, and it was done with the natural ease of an experienced military leader. His head lowered and his cowl covered his eye slits. “Khonshu!” Moon Knight stated emphatically, but evenly, solidly but not loudly. None of the other Avengers dared to speak, perceiving the invocation as a sort of religious fervor. After at least two minutes, he repeated, “Khonshu!” Nothing happened. “Khonshu!” Moon Knight implored a third time.
Finally, silently, a sliver of silver light seemed to shine in the eastern corner of the conference room. A female voice said, “Khonshu is occupied.” The Avengers turned their heads toward the light and the silky voice. A tall, extremely beautiful woman stood – or almost floated – there. She bore a tiara that shone with a glistening lunar glow. It held back glistening, long black hair, and she wore a bow over her shoulder. A long hunting knife was visible tucked into her belt.
“Artemis!” Sersi exclaimed. “Is has been too long!” Sersi nodded her head in welcome, a gesture that was almost a respectful bow.
“Perhaps we will have time for conversation later, Sersi,” she loftily declared. The goddess – if that was really who she was – quickly scanned the room with piercing vision, looking into each hero’s eyes. Each hero felt the woman’s powerful presence and her charisma, no matter whether she really was a Greek goddess. “This one…” she said quietly with a lovely voice, striding slowly toward the Vision. “It is not human, yet it has a human form.” She turned her head toward Moon Knight. “Can it be trusted?” she asked.
“The Vision has risked his life in battles with us,” Moon Knight said. He extended his muscular arm and swept his finger across the room. “I trust all of these heroes. They are the Avengers.”
“Then, emissary of the moon, we have to avenge my ‘cousin,’ and there is no time to waste,” Artemis said. “I can transport you near your destination, but my uncle Pluto might become suspicious if I took you too close to the Rod of Asclepius. It seems as though every minor demi-god seeks to climb the steps to Olympus at the moment, and if this trend continues, it is possible that this strife could lead to war among the gods. You will need valor and conviction to reach your goal…”

This Annual will function differently from a typical heroclix game. Over the course of the issue the WCA will travel through several maps, the course of which they will decide upon. The team is free to split up as they choose and it may in fact be advantageous to do so; Mt. Olympus is a big place and the Avengers will need to cover a lot of ground to reach Apollo's temple. If you take the wrong path you might have to face Pluto, or worse yet Ares himself! When you reach a new area I will post the new map and what enemies and obstacles you find there, as well as what other areas it connects to. The game has no time limit.
If you decide to have one or more Avengers turn back from their current course and rejoin their allies elsewhere, it takes one round to cross each previously cleared map.
Exits: 1) Heading north by the upper edge of the map will take the Avengers to the Agora, the central crossroads of mt Olympus.
2) If at least one Avenger with Super Strength is adjacent to the blocking terrain in K/M-11/13, Avengers can enter these squares to head down into the caves of Mt. Olympus and through Vulcan's forge.
with my 'winning' Initiative, that means I make first move, right?... I'll try to get set up today yet... the incredible heat wave has broken for the time being, and our attic is much more bearable now...
so my objective is not necessarily to knock out all of the opposing figures, right?... I see it says that this issue/match has no time limit, but is there a sort of time or turn limit to the heroes' reaching the next/each map?... I presume only those heroes still conscious may proceed to the next map and continue the quest for the Rod of Asclepius?...
here's my set-up...

so my objective is not necessarily to knock out all of the opposing figures, right?...
Technically your goal is to get the rod of Asclepius, which will require traversing a few maps filled with enemies. You don't have to KO every single one, you are free to move past them if you are able.

There's no time limit on moving through any of the maps, it's more of an endurance challenge because if you go through every map one by one you'll end up facing significantly more than 700 points of enemies. You'll need to know when to abandon one route and find an easier one (or else just get lucky and pick the easy path by blind luck). I'll explain more once you've explored past this first map.
Any Avengers that are KO'ed are whisked away by Artemis to Khonshu's abode in Duat, where they will await the rest of their team and the healing touch of the Rod.
Artemis transported the Avengers to a beautiful, hilly woodland. When the heroes realized they were no longer in New York, they looked around, trying to gain their bearings. They quickly noticed that Artemis was not with them.
"Where did she go?" Mockingbird asked, echoing the thoughts of several of her teammates. She turned to look at Moon Knight, as if he should know the answer to the question.
A disembodied voice seemed to fill each of their heads. 'These are my hunting grounds.' The Avengers felt somehow that it was Artemis speaking. 'You should be honored; I have permitted very few mortals to step here.'
Across the glen, a virtual menagerie of mythical creatures recognized that the Avengers had arrived. They turned and loosed a variety of animal sounds, from angry bellows to roars to bleats.
Again, Artemis voice could be 'heard:' 'I cannot control my minions here for the time being owing to Pluto's waxing influence; and I dare not be seen assisting you yet. You must proceed quickly to obtain the Rod of Asclepius. If you head north, you will reach the crossroads to Mount Oympus. You might also choose to enter the caves to the east and attempt to reach Mount Olympus through the caverns of Hephaestus. I do not know if he stays loyal to his father Zeus, or his uncle, Pluto...'
(all of these moves are Avengers TA 'free' move actions except Hawkeye and Wasp...)
- Vision uses Carry ( -2), moving to F16 and placing Scarlet Witch in F15, where she enjoys Stealth.
- Mockingbird leaps to J15.

- Hawkeye leaps to L16.
- Wasp moves to E15.

Carefree as he was, even in times such as this, Pan was busy cavorting amongst the grass an trees with an accompaniment of fellow creatures, some caught in the spell of his music.
"What ho is this?" He asked himself as a Fearie woman of nobel lineage, one of the few present who wasn't under the sway of his spell, brought to his notice the newcomers.
"Perhaps we should greet them." She suggested, though with less than benevolent thoughts in her heart. She may have been present of her own will, but her reason for doing so had mischievous purpose at best.
"I say you might be right!" Pan said, and began to travel towards where the Avengers were headed. He signaled for his dog, the other being there of its own volition, to follow. They saw to it to hide behind a rock, with Pan thinking he could leap out an surprised them when they arrived.

It was difficult for the Avengers to see the creatures. Would they recognize the 'scent' of their master, Artemis, Wonder Man wondered, or would they attack the Avengers as interlopers? Simon asked himself briefly when the last mortal human walked through these woods.
Moon Knight lunged ahead, trying to alter the balance of the setting. Tigra followed his lead and took some cover in some shrubbery. Her feline nature served her well in these surroundings.
- Hawkeye's Trait 'Put Away The Bow' means that he now has Combat Reflexes (instead of ES/D) and CCE (instead of RCE).
