Long into the afternoon the accumulated notes, maps and scraps of evidence had spilled over from the bulletin board where they had started as an intricately connected web of clues and onto the coffee table and even the floor, where they degraded into a mess of organized chaos. Every bit of information on Intergang and Cadmus was here somewhere.
"...Intergang's rank and file agents are just criminals trained to use high-tech weaponry, but each cell is always headed by a metahuman Don that organizes their particular operation. Where are these meta-abilities coming from?" Lois asked, flipping through photos of captured or suspected Intergang recruits.
"Some of these suspected Dons already had powers; Blockbuster has been a superhuman bruiser for years, but he was never one to lead. The business suits are a new touch as well" grunted Batman.
"Intelligence enhancing chemicals? Smart drugs," answered John Henry. "Not one of my inventions, but easily within Intergang's abilities."
"The International team reported something similar from an Intergang operative in China, a Chang Tzu..." interjected Batman, shuffling papers to find a report from Blue Beetle.
"But Blockbuster's activities are centered on Bludhaven; his territory couldn't be that large. There has to be another Don operating in Metropolis" continued Steel.
Much of what was known about Intergang came from John Henry Irons, the man known as Steel. Fighting Intergang was the primary reason he had donned his armored suit in the first place. Shutting them down was his crusade, and he intended to see it through. But since his workshop had been seized by the government and his latest armor had been turned into an improvised bomb at the north pole, it was doubtful if he would ever bear the moniker "Steel" again. Yet his intelligence was more valuable to their investigation than a man in a suit of armor ever could be. He had broken down the basic structure of the group: distinct cells operating independently, headed by a metahuman 'Don', receiving sophisticated technology from... somewhere. Since the front line men didn't know anything beyond their cell interrogation hadn't provided much, even Batman's advanced techniques. They needed to apply those to one of the Dons, but none of the Dons had been caught yet.
"Here," agent Sage pointed to a specific cluster of clippings pinned to the wall. "A year and a half ago, a Tylerchem fabrication plant was hit by a group of 'expertly coordinated and well funded terrorists', and the stolen property included research material for the study-drug they are working on."
"Hhrm. My sources were sure that one was a League of Assassins job," frowned Batman.
"Maybe it was. They are mercenaries, aren't they?" Lois asked. "They could have been running a job or maybe Intergang was who they fenced the loot to."
It fit the pattern that was developing. Intergang had a habit of turning small time costumed crooks into legitimate threats, then sticking them in charge of a cell of their agents. An excellent means of securing their ongoing loyalty, as long as the hi-tech weapons and other enhancements kept flowing. But from where? All the signs pointed to some higher leadership that had access to very sophisticated scientific and engineering capabilities. Blockbuster didn't mix those smart drugs himself, that was for sure.
"Let's look at those skirmish incidents again," suggested Lois, pulling open the folder of FBI reports furnished by agent Sage. Reports of mysterious black helicopters, MIBs, and "strike teams" appearing to deal with violent monsters and metacrime before disappearing back to where ever they came from. It read like a collection of tabloid stories at first glance, but agent Sage's painstaking legwork had nailed down specifics and positively identified the mysterious government teams as agents of Cadmus.
According to the FBI's investigation, Intergang was engaged in a longstanding secret war with a group called Cadmus. The brief conflicts that the public caught sight of was only the tip of the iceberg, with a very bizarre truth hidden beneath the surface. Batman and the Justice League had put Cadmus under surveillance ever since they took custody of the corpse of Doomsday, eventually breaking in to retrieve the body. Even with Superman on the strike team they had barely made it out of the facility with their objective intact. But in the time since Batman had looked deeper into the Cadmus mystery.
"We know Cadmus is heavily involved in biotechnology and genomics engineering. Which is all slightly less than legal, but with the exception of the risk that Doomsday's body held, none of their activity posed an immediate threat to the public. In fact, the only time Cadmus ever pokes its head out into daylight is when it intercepts an Intergang operation or cleans up one of the 'monsters' like the ones Superboy reported from the drive-in."
"Capturing failed Intergang experiments for study?" Vic theorized. "Or Cadmus biotech that got loose? If it's the latter, then I'd say it is only a matter of time they create something that they can't contain."
It was becoming evident that there was some kind of arms race going on right under everyone's noses, and the places where this secret war had spilled out into the light of day were meticulously documented in the Daily Planet archives. "Probably both," Lois answered, lining up a trio of article clippings with set of FBI case reports already arranged into a loose timetable. "Feb. 25th: A team of 'jetpack raiders' connected to Intergang set fire to Kord International's Gotham office before being chased off by unidentified aircraft. Kord took over the failed Gotham Lexcorp expansion and has reportedly been sitting on all the property it seized. Then on April 5th they turn up again as burning crop circles in Kansas? Dec 29th: Authorities tracked Blockbuster's men moving unidentified cargo into a ship bound for San Boca which sinks due to an 'electrical fire' before it can get more than a click out of Bludhaven harbor. San Boca was already implicated as the source of Intergang muscle being illegally smuggled into America. January 11th: A travelling salesman in Minnesota brings in a wounded 'Chupacabra' that he says he hit with his truck, which is quickly confiscated by representatives of the HDC, a possible front organization for Cadmus? Feb. 14th we have an entire Smallville theater audience gassed to sleep by a Cadmus team hunting some kind of 'skunk ape' as the locals described it, where Jimmy Olsen goes missing and has remained so to this date," Lois added that last entry into their growing chronology of events with added bitterness in her voice, worrying about Jimmy's fate. She had confidence in him, he was a scrapper and a survivor like herself, but she had seen plenty of informants and whistleblowers "disappeared" by shadowy groups in her line of work. Lois wasn't one to buy into conspiracy theories but after spending all day piecing together the biggest conspiracy in American history she was starting to believe Cadmus had it well within their power to make sure Jimmy never saw the light of day again, if that's what they wanted. If only she could pick out some kind of a pattern from this mess...
"Freshen your mug?" chirped Supergirl, holding out a hot pot of coffee in one hand. Lois had barely registered her entering the room, a private conference area in the Daily Planet building that Perry White had closed off until Lois said they were finished. Perry knew not to pry too much into Lois' business when she was following a big story, and one half-seen glimpse of Batman stalking down the hallway after hours had convinced him to leave them their privacy. Cir-El on the other hand had little concept of privacy and if anything Batman was perhaps a little unnerved by her.
Supergirl wasn't much help when it came to investigative detective work, but she refused to be useless. To wit, she had begun dropped in every couple of hours with freshly made coffee and snacks to keep the sleuths working at peak ability. Lois had no idea where Supergirl got the barista uniform from, but she had too much on her mind already to bother asking. This visit she had brought an entire wicker picnic basket tucked under her arm brimming with sandwiches, fruits, juice boxes and sliced carrots.
"Double espresso for the G-man, mint mocha latte for mister Irons, and white tea for Batman," Cir rhymed off, passing out each beverage in turn. She reached for a second brown paper bag and pulled it open, releasing the scent of warm gingerbread throughout the room. "Are you sure I can't tempt you with a cookie Batman? I baked them fresh less than an hour ago..."
Batman grunted and ignored her, even as the others each reached for a bite to eat. Working straight through lunch had left them with sizeable appetites gnawing at their insides, and Cir's picnic basket was a welcome sight indeed. Supergirl was not deterred by a simple cold shoulder. Reaching in again she slowly withdrew a double-sized slab of gingerbread cut into the shape of the bat-emblem on the Dark Knight's chest. "Buuum, buuum, BA-BUMMM!" she sang the opening bar of Also Spach Zarathustra as she revealed her creation, decorated by an icing smile on the bat's 'face'.
"Honey, how are things going with Superboy? Any news?" Lois asked her, looking to give Batman enough peace to continue his work.
Supergirl gave her mother a disappointed shrug. "I'm sure mister Martian is doing his best, but it is taking an awful long time. And Kara keeps telling me, 'leave the boys alone and let J'onn do his work' but it's sooo boring. A girl can only bake for so long! It's enough to make me want to take up knitting."
While Lois and her team of detectives were hard at work at the Planet, J'onn J'onzz was spending the day with Superboy and Supergirl to have a deep telepathic probe into their subconscious. A much more time-consuming task than the comparatively brief scan he performed when Supergirl had first arrived, but recent events had called for it. The teens' encounter with Cadmus at the drive-in made in clear that there were more secrets in their brains than first suspected; Cadmus had used key words and phrases to render both super-teens helpless and unable to defend themselves let alone fight off the Cadmus agents. Not only was this a potential problem, even a threat, the next time Cadmus should resurface, but if J'onn could crack the subliminal code it could reveal vital clues to the entire mystery. Clues that Lois really wish she had right now.
"Hey, what's this stuff? Are these police records?" Cir asked, grabbing up several of the carefully arranged documents. "Oh, and here's something marked 'Top Secret', wow!"
"Cir, no!" Lois snapped, slapping her alleged daughter's wrist.
"Awww, but I can help! I know I can!" Supergirl whined, her face falling into a mope. "In the future Superman let me help him solve all kinds of mysteries!"
"This one is a bit more complex than figuring out which butler stole the queen's tarts," Lois scoffed, taking the files back from Cir and replacing them back in the pattern she had worked out. She did feel for the girl though, cooped up at home and shut out of the sleuthing at the Planet. "Here," she offered, reaching for the folder of discarded clippings that hadn't born fruit. Everything from hoaxes to batty conspiracy theorists jumping at shadows wound up in their 'crank file'. "Why don't you chase down some of these 'leads' in this file? One of them might hold the key to the case."
"I'm on the job!" Supergirl exclaimed, snapping to attention complete with a military salute. She grabbed the crank folder from Lois with a grin that bordered on the maniacal. "You can count on Supergirl. Consider this case as good as cracked!"
She left in a rush of air straight out the boardroom window, moments before Vic could ask, "So does that mean no more cookies then?"
****************
"...and so the Black Glove society, which is in fact populated by reptoids disguised as humans, are working in alliance with the saucer people to plan the coming invasion! But first they knew they had to get rid of Superman to stand any chance, so of course their first step was to sneak fluoride into the water supply. But they could never accomplish that without the aid of bigfoot, who (as you will recall) is an agent of...?"
"...euhh ...Cadmus?" Superboy guessed, his brow furrowed in confusion as he gazed at the elaborate chart that Supergirl had constructed. She smiled and hopped over to a map of the city she had pinned up as well, a handful of colorful stickers marking out some kind of pattern she had claimed to find.
"Yes! Exactly!" Supergirl cheered, glad that Conner was able to follow her deductions despite still being rather foggy-headed after J'onn's intensive telepathic probing. J'onn had been as gentle as possible but any sort of contact on such a deep level was bound to take its toll. And Superboy had subjected himself to the hypno-therapy for hours, until he had eventually reached his breaking point and had to ask for a break. "So in order to bring back Superman and save everyone, the first thing we need to do is... hey, waitasecond..."
"Hold. The. Phone!" Supergirl stopped cold, staring intently at the map. "Look at this!"
"Whaaaat is it...?" Conner groaned, holding his forehead in discomfort.
"If you look at only the Intergang attacks that happened on Sundays, they all make a straight line starting in easttown and heading straight for the tech sector by the waterfront! Today is a Sunday! Do you know what this MEANS?!"
"......."
"It means we have to go right away! There's crime afoot!"
"Yeah fine whatever," Superboy winced, rising with resignation when Supergirl pulled him from his place on her bed. A nice relaxed flight through the city might help clear his head, or at least give Supergirl something else to focus on for a little while.
Ten minutes of patrolling later had accomplished neither. If anything the fog surrounding Conner's brain had only gotten thicker, making everything around him feel like it was happening in a slow motion echo of reality. But at least he could tune Cir out.
"...And after 9/11 happened the Dark Circle had no choice but to get rid of Elvis. He would just be too big of a threat to their plans. Luckily Cadmus has been releasing Elvis clones into the population for decades so there was no way to wipe them all out, at least not all at once. But if you read the part about how certain aliens are susceptible to particular sonic vibrations found in American rock 'n 'roll, you may start to realize HOLY CHEESE LOOK IT'S A ROBOT!"
"What?!" Conner awoke with a start, realizing he had very nearly fallen asleep while flying until Supergirl's exclamation had hit him like a splash of cold water. He blinked twice to refocus where she was pointing. And sure enough, clanking along over the rooftop of a three-story building was a metallic humanoid figure looking like an extra from a Dr. Who episode.
"Told you!" Supergirl grinned at him. "It's probably an Intergang robot, about to attack the next R&D facility on its list. By why only on Sundays? Hmm..."
"Wait Supergirl, we can't just assume it is hostile. Robots aren't exactly commonplace but this is Metropolis after all."
"Hmph. Yeah, you're right. We should give him the benefit of the doubt."
Supergirl glided down towards the mechanical person, bringing Conner to call after her. "Wait, what are you going to do?"
"Relax! I know how to speak robot-ese!"
She swooped in carefully, landing softly and approaching with her hands held out in a placating gesture, but still tensed to spring into action at the first sign of trouble. About halfway across the rooftop the robot turned and spotted her, took a few steps forward and lifted its arms in a similar diplomatic posture. It had no real face to read, just an expressionless metal mask and visor. Getting close enough to speak Supergirl relaxed slightly, politely cleared her throat, and introduced herself:
"Beep beepaleep beep boooooop!" Supergirl carried on in randomly raising and lowering tones, even as the robot yelled at her to stop.
"I'm not a robot!" the mechanical person protested, trying to yell over Supergirl's best impression of a dial-up modem. "Supergirl stop! Cut it out! Supergirl!"
"Laura, it's me: Natasha!" Supergirl was finally stunned into silence, allowing Natasha a moment to unlock her helmet and pull it off over her head. "Gawd! Will you be quiet already?"
"Natasha Irons?" Supergirl said, shocked to find her closest school friend roaming around the city in a suit of powered armor. "Tasha, what the heck are you doing out in, uhh, that?"
"Me? What are you doing flying around in a gymnastics uniform and a cape? When were you going to tell me you were a superhero?"
"I'm supposed to keep it secret! Hey wait, how did you recognize me anyway? I'm in my superhero disguise!"
"Ah, duh? You're my best friend, as if I wouldn't recognize you just because you're not wearing your glasses. It's not like you wear a mask over your face."
"Hnn. Yeah," Supergirl reluctantly agreed, feeling slightly embarrassed. Her disguise had held up okay until now, but this was really the first time her school life and her superhero life had really bumped into each other.
"Is everything okay?" Superboy asked, breaking into the conversation as he descended to the rooftop as well. "Do you two know each other or something?"
"Superboy, Natasha. Natasha, Superboy."
"Natasha... Irons? I know you too, you're Steel's niece! I've seen you hanging around his workshop. Or, I mean, you used to anyway." Superboy shuffled a little awkwardly. "Until it got shut down by the HDC."
"Who are part of the conspiracy!" Supergirl reminded him, though the other two ignored the out-of-place comment.
"So... Natasha... what's with the power armor?" Conner asked, trying to broach the subject as casually as possible. "Is that like, a thing in your family or something?"
Natasha gave him a wry look that normally might have made him feel foolish for asking such a question, but Conner was not in a state that left him perceptive enough to catch such things. And so Natasha took a breath and did her best to fill them in. "I had been collecting bits of my uncle's inventions to tinker with ever since I moved to Metropolis, but it wasn't until a few months ago that he trashed an entire suit of armor. It was around the same time you started working for him."
That succeeded in making Superboy feel foolish, being reminded of how his telekinesis had dismantled Steel's Mark 1 armor in an effort to impress Maxima.
"So I snuck off with the wrecked armor and spent some time repairing it and adding some new features to it too. Uncle John was completely focused on the new armor to pay attention to his scraps. But lately he hasn't been working on any new armor to replace the last one, at least as far as I can tell... I'm worried he's given up. But I knew how much stopping Intergang meant to him, so I decided I would put the armor on and stop them for him, if that's what it took! besides, these rocket-boots are hella fun!"
"Really, can I try them?" Cir asked.
Superboy gave a mental shrug and concentrated on what Natasha had said. "Wait, what do you know about Intergang?"
"I know they're about to hit the software development building at the end of the block. I've been honing in on them with my tracking sensors for the last hour."
"Seriously? Alright," Superboy shrugged for real this time, not ready to try to weigh his trust Natasha and her competence in tracking criminals. Really he was just trying to get over the fact that Cir-El's analysis had somehow actually lead them to an Intergang attack just as she had predicted. But if Natasha had been preparing to intercept the attack, then he was fine with letting her take the lead this time. "We've got your back Natasha. Just tell us where the bad guys are."
Natasha smiled, and put her helmet back into place. "Awesome. And when I'm in the armor, you can call me Steel."

Hi Joseph, nice to meet you. Are you looking to join the DC side of the rpsc, or did you just want to play some games online? I'm not sure if you're new to Heroclix or just new to online play, but I'm happy to help with any questions you have.
Two things to mention so far;
1. I notice you didn't place any objects on the board. That's fine, you don't have to, but if you choose to you are allowed to place up to three object tokens (One Light-yellow, one heavy-red, and a third of either type) before the game begins. If it was your strategy to not place any objects I can understand that, considering my entire team has Super Strength.
2. When you give actions to characters, remember to mark them with action tokens. On the map these are the little red and blue dots in the "tokens" tab. I've added the for you on the map here: http://www.ianparmenter.com/hcutils2...5y65&t3=x720y7
Additionally, when you update the "recap" as below, just use the "@" symbol to represent action tokens after the character's name, position, and click number. Like so...

I am looking to join to the DC side of things. I may as well be considered new to heroclix. I started playing with hypertime as a kid and played for a couple of years. I've reread the rules quite a bit but just playing out the little I have it is starting to come back to me much more. I was having issues with the map at work so I couldn't see any markers on the example threads. It seems to be working at home just fine so I'll make sure to put the push tokens on there.
Thank you. I was a little nervous that players on the thread would just be wanting to play, I really appreciate taking the time to help me out.
Oh and I forgot to introduce myself. Hi. I'm Joe. It's nice to meet you Gargan.
"Aww yeah," Supergirl grins with glee, rushing forward to dive into the enemies taking up defensive positions. "Me and my best friends kicking evil in the heiney, what more can a girl ask for?"
"Hey you!" she calls out, announcing her presence and killing any chance for a sneak attack. "You look like you're in charge. EAT JUSTICE!"
