So the question is, once you merge a duo where do you place the figure? I merged Vision and the Scarlet Witch. They were diagonal to each other, do you then place the duo in the same diagonal squares? Vision was the one to initiate the merge action, so i was wondering if the duo placement would be based on the square he was in. Now if it was ant-man and wasp merging, the duo is a single base, would they be placed in the spot of the charactering initiating the merge or is it up to the player?
MERGE
When this character is adjacent to other friendly characters that each represent one distinct qualifying character listed on a Duo character’s character card and all of them have no action tokens, give this character a free action to replace all of them with that Duo character, the same number of clicks from its starting line as this character. The combined point value of the qualifying characters must be equal to or greater than the point value of the Duo character (unless that Duo character previously used the Split ability to be replaced by these same characters). The Duo character can’t use the Split ability this turn. This ability can’t be countered.
I would say, since it refers to "this character", the replacement would be in the square of the character that triggers the merge
So vision initiates. He's diagonal to the witch. The opponets figure is diagonal to the Witch. After the merge this is what i wanted, basically so i would no longer be adjacent and could then running shot on another character.

The judge ruled that when they combinded the duo would be placed in the same squares the individual figures were in, and i couldnt find any official rule to say which was allowed one way or the other.
Take the same diagram from above where Ant-man is in vision's spot and wasp is in the witch's spot. If ant-man initiates the duo would be placed in his square since he was the one causing the merge to happen. That much seems fairly simple.
REPLACING CHARACTERS
Certain game effects will call for a character to be
replaced with one or more other characters on the
map. When assembling your force, you identify
these replacement characters although they are
not yet on your force. Replacement characters’
point values are not added to your build total. All
players should agree on the maximum number of
replacement characters allowed per force.
While replacement characters are off the map,
they should be positioned on their click. When a
game effect causes a character to be replaced:
• Tokens assigned to the replaced character
are assigned to the replacement character,
including tokens for the action that placed
them on the map, unless otherwise specified
by that effect. • The replacement character must occupy
squares that were occupied by the replaced
character. If this is not possible, the
replacement character may occupy squares
adjacent to squares that were occupied by
the replaced character.
• If the replaced character was given a nonfree
action this turn, then the replacement
character is considered to have been given a
non-free action this turn as well.
This would seem to say the replacement has to occupy the squares that the replaced character occupies.
So with Ant-man and Wasp, I think you could choose which of the 2 squares, since all the characters are being replaced.

The bolded part would seem to say that all the characters are being replaced, so the replacement must occupy all the squares that it can. So Vision and Scarlet duo would be placed exactly where the two figures were.

Yes. See above for why.

Thanks!
Either spot would work. Personally, just for ease of tracking, I like to put the single-based Duo in the square of the cahracter that was actually given the action to use Merge... but that isn't a rule.

Totally makes sense to me now. Thanks for the replies.
