I'm selling my laptop and getting a tablet. I bought my laptop to mainly play games, and it just never happened. It is too big, and not functional for places like school or just taking it with me places.
I figured a tablet would be best.
Any thoughts from you all what to get?
I have an ipod. I enjoy it. So I am leaning towards an ipad. I more than likely would not get an ipad 4. It seems, from what I understand, that I can get about the same functionality out of an ipad 2, save for 4G but I just need wifi.
I do not have my heart set on a ipad though. Does itunes work on any tablet besides an ipad though?
I am looking to spend around $400-$500 or less. I do not mind buying refurbished or used if the deal is right and it is somewhat covered by warranty.
I have been looking at the ipad minis as well, not sure yet about that. Also Samsung Galaxy's look nice, the one Asus looks nice.
Depends on what you are looking for I guess. Android devices you can play your Itunes music and podcasts but you can't play movies/videos from Itunes I do believe. They have Hybrids now (tablet/laptop) that are pretty cool. I'm starting to slowly look into this stuff myself and it looks like you can get an offbrand Android tablet for about 60 bucks.
I recently bought a refurbed Asus TF101 with the keyboard dock for about $300. I like it a lot but if I could go back, I would have bought a newer Asus tablet. The version I bought doesn't support Android 4.1 yet. According to Asus they will offer support in the future. Other than that, it's a great device. I primarily use it for web browsing, playing mobile games, and reading comics. It does all those things really well.
I didn't look at the iPad when I was shopping, so I don't know how they compare. I already have an iPhone, so I wanted an Android device because there some apps (Heroclix Rules App) that I can't get on iOS.
I strongly advise you to get an iPad. Flame me as an apple fanboy if you must, but I work for VZW. I've used a LOT of android tablets. Nothing comes close to the iPad in my experience.

Personally I am not an Apple fan as I hate the fact you have to go through iTunes.
I do have a ten inch Samsung Galaxy tab, and love it. I like it so much that the next time I buy a new pc it will be a tablet (windows 8 tablets have hit the market now, and some windows 7 tablets are as powerful as many laptops).
Android can be good, but also bad. The Galaxy blows the doors off the ipads imho, due to its greater flexibility and the fact it is more powerful than many of the ipads (not including the most recent model). It also has swype which means you don't have to type on a small screen, rather you run your fingers in one line over the keypad letters and it will pick out the word you meant to type.
Although, as you are an xbox gamer I strongly suggest looking at Windows 8 tablets. Windows 8 was designed as a tablet os from the ground up. You could then run any pc software on your tablet and Microsoft has recently unveiled Smartglass which will seamlessly connect yor tablet and xbox to let you type, shunt off special content, put things like maps and floor plans in real time on the tablet so it frees up screen real estate on your tv, etc.
At the end though, try several in the store and read up on them. You can get a nice one, or total dreck.
"Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad,
He's so bad, he mak'a me mad
Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad
He's a real cad, Un-fun Dad"
I have Droid for a phone so I have the Clix apps on there. I can get anything I couldn't get on the ipad on my phone I'm sure.
I'm leaning heavily towards the ipad. Everyone I know has one, and I've never heard a bad thing about them unless it was someone who hates Microsoft products already.
My little bro ended up needing a laptop pretty bad so I sold him mine for cheap, should help with the cost of snagging the tablet. Now to just find the best deal.
Based on the fact that you said you like your iPod, you're already in the iOS ecosystem, and you're willing to spend $400-500, I would recommend an iPad.
I would stay away from the iPad mini, at least this first generation. I would bet Apple will release a second gen iPad mini that is significantly better in less than a year.
I have an iPad 2, it's pretty awesome. The current gen iPad is a pretty nice step up for another $100. Also consider getting refurbished ones from Apple. They're like $100 cheaper and really, you can't tell the difference, or at least I haven't been able to.

Hmmm might check that one out as well.
Yea that's why I'm pretty much leaning toward the ipad. All of them have their own flaws I'm sure, but I know 100% I'm not getting a POS if I get the ipad. I've used them, seen them used, and never heard a complaint.
I know it has some limitations, but I'm not looking for a super machine really. I just want something to be able to go to class and take notes with, use itunes, and do a few things on the internet and get a few apps.
I really like my ipod too. I'm going to go out this weekend and just check a few out in hand.

I have a buddy that does iDevice repair and he highly recommended getting a refurbished one from Apple. I'm on their site right now checking them out. Probably will go with the 3rd generation one, 32 or 64 gb. I could go with 16, but I dunno, it's probably worth it to spend the extra $ for 32 or 64. How big is yours? Do you find 32 or 64 to be too much? enough?
Your droid apps will show up on the tablet with no additional cost.
I think I only have a couple paid apps on my phone. Probably more on my ipod I think.
One thing I do know is that my Droids battery life is terrible. I have to charge it all the time. And it was that way from the get go. But my ipod, which I use more than my phone, I only need to charge it every 2, sometimes 3 days.
Is the battery life for some of the android market tabs similar? I almost switched to iphone just for battery life, but I do enjoy my droid and dont plan on getting a new phone any time soon anyway. The battery life is really annoying though.
eh. I've got 64 but am not using anywhere close to that. I think I'm using like 10. Really the big space hog is video; it you've got a lot of iTunes movies/TV shows you want to keep on the tablet, you need more memory. But for music, books, apps, they don't use that much space.
I used mine for a class, and I recommend the Notability app for taking notes. It's pretty amazing. I typed straight on the virtual keyboard, but I know some people like external keyboards.
Also, the Amazon Kindle app is free, and you can find a lot of your textbooks as Kindle books, depending on what you're taking. I would also download all of the assigned readings pdfs into iBooks. Basically, I went paperless. It was pretty sweet.
I got a Nexus 7 also. I got mine for something to kill time. Download a few games that I can play if I have an hour to kill and nothing better to do. Reading on it is not a problem; my eyes don't get strained even after an hour or so. I really like the 7" tablets though, they're not too bulky but at the same time also not so small that I find myself wishing for more screen space. I've watched movies on it. Overall I'm really happy with it, though I should note that it is my first tablet. And I'm with Ignatz...I charge my tablet about every other day or so average. The expception is sundays. but thats because I am constantly using it to check my fantasy football stuff.
