I'll be getting into these tomorrow when I get home from work! Have to admit a bias for Ten Years After, but those biases always seem to fade after hearing the competition!
Really nice group of songs here. My choices could change on a different day, but for today:
1- Chris Daughtry- Really nice song, the emotions feel real. You don't have to be running from anything to miss home.
2- Cold Mountain Soundtrack- Close to my roots. Joyous singing, raucous in an organized, heartfelt way, no alcohol needed (or allowed). I have serious issues with the religion I was raised in, but not always with the music or sincerety.
3- Ten Years After- Takes me back, solid, solid, sound.
4- Barry Cowsill- Lots of fun! All I could think of was how much I loved Cowsill's songs way back when!
5- Rocky Horror Picture Show- I wasn't expecting anything, but got a pretty nice showtune. I like it.
6- Fats Domino- While appreciating the history, not one of my favorites from Mr. Domino.
7- Bill Ferguson- Simple, pleasant. To me its not a frontrunner among this group.
8- Buffy Sainte Marie- Nothing much for me here. Bores me a bit.
1) Buffy Sainte Marie
2) Barry Cowsill - For those who didn't catch it, he was a Katrina victim.
3) Cold Mountain Soundtrack - Love this type of music
4) Ten Years After - Lower then you'd think it would be with me, but there are other TYA songs I like even better then this. It's still a solid song though.
5) Bill Ferguson
6) Rocky Horror Picture Show
7) Fats Domino
8) Chris Daughtry - just can't warm up to this guy.

Alvin Lee and Ten Years After – Kick-### guitar work from the man. Okay, this is what Woodstock was all about musically. Gimme some damned musicians who wanted to be there tearing it up. Leo Lyons was just all over the fretboard on bass and if you ever see the video for this, he looks like he could have given himself a concussion the way he shook his head. I’m biased, towards these guys and will stash them in at numero uno.
Bill Ferguson - Such sweet finger-picking guitar. Nothing crazy, just laid back playing and vocals with lyrics that just kind of meander and don’t go anywhere that they don’t have to. On the higher end of the spectrum for me.
Rocky Horror Pic Show (Tim Curry vocals) – One of my fave songs from both the musical and the movie, but this version with Curry singing and his mascara running is ####ing incredibly done. When he sings “Like I’m outside, in the rain…” and gets that deep throaty tenor, well, he blows me away.
Fats Domino – The man had a way of making great rock and roll songs and infusing them with N’awlins style blues. Walking bass lines became strutting bass lines. This is what kids wanting to play in a rock band should listen to. It’ll give great perspective on where the sound came from and how it got to them at this point. As such, they’d sit there and go, oh yeah, I get it and I also get how bad Justin Bieber really sucks. That last line was to see who all was paying attention, but yeah, it’s true.
Chris Daughtry – I’m a fan of his. It was one of the two or three seasons I actually watched Idol, and I only watched that season for him. This is standard rock fare. I don’t see it rising to the top or sinking to the bottom. The lyrics are okay, not as powerful as what Eddie Vedder would write and certainly not as dopey as what David Lee Roth would wite.
Barry Cowsill – Power Pop from one of the original Princes of Pop music. It’s what I was expecting. It’s in the middle of the pack, just shy of Daughtry for entertainment value.
Buffy Sainte Marie – Not one of my favorites by her. I hate the background vocals and the chorus. Lyrically, it’s not bad for me, but I have a hard time with the composition. Give me Nick Drake any day of the week at his worst and it’s still a lot better.
Cold Mountain Soundtrack – I really have to be in the mood for something like this and needless to say, after hearing Alvin Lee and Ten Years After, I was not in the mood.
This was a tough round for me as nothing really got me going. There were some ok listens, but nothing I needed to hear ever again.
1) Fats Domino - It's Fats singing and playing the piano, and that is enough to beat everything else here.
2) Barry Cowsill - A nice tune I could tap my feet to.
3) Buffy Sainte Marie - Never heard her before. Interesting vocals and the music wasn't too bad either.
4) Rocky Horror Picture Show
5) Bill Ferguson - Pleasant but nothing exciting
6) Cold Mountain Soundtrack - I normally like this kind of sound with chorus vocals and minimal music, but I just couldn't get into it here.
7) Ten Years After - Jam rock really isn't my cup of tea. I can get into some of it, but after 6 min of wankery I loose interest.
8) Chris Daughtry - eh, pretty boring. He sounds like a nu-metal guy trying to sing over a plain rock sound (like Disturbed or whatever). My dad (a jazz guy) likes his stuff which really surprises me.
1.) Barry Cowsill - This I did not expect. I like the Cowsills and figured I'd like this song. But this one really impressed me.
2.) Buffy Sainte Marie - Wow. Buffy has always been real hit or miss for me. This was a big, big hit. Very nice. Very enjoyable.
3.) Ten Years After - I admit it. I'm an Alvin Lee fan. It took a lot for me to NOT rate this higher. I still like it better than the songs listed below, though.
4.) Rocky Horror Picture Show - A lot of the songs from Rocky Horror, IMO, don't stand very well on their own. This one actually does.
5.) Fats Domino - scratchy record and all, Fats is always a good listen.
6.) Bill Ferguson - I think if I listened to this one a few more times I'd like it more than I do now. I could see it rating higher then the Fats tune, anyway.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
7.) Cold Mountain Soundtrack - ummmm.No. That was powerful annoyin'!
8.) Chris Daughtry - Sorry - I never caught Daughtry Fever.
May all your hits be crits!
On the whole, human beings want to be good — but not too good, and not quite all the time. - George Orwell
Missed that this one us up, but I'm not going to have a chance to listen to all of these before tomorrow night. If you want to hold it open, I'll try to remember to get to it then.
1. Ten Years After
2. Barry Cowsill
3. Buffy Sainte Marie
4. Bill Ferguson
5. Fats Domino
6. Chris Daughtry
7. Cold Mountain Soundtrack
8. Rocky Horror Picture Show
And just for the halibut, there's this one, from a favorite movie...

Well you know there will be more contests with this song name right?
Just waiting on Smudge and Gargantua.

Rocky Horror - Whether part of it is nostalgia for my college days and midnight screenings, or just pure enjoyment of the song, I'm not quite sure, but leaning heavily in favor if this one.
Fats Domino - Nice Fats Domino. Not great Fats Domino, but even bad Fats Domino (not that there is such a thing) would rank a lot higher than other artists' really good.
Ten Years After - A bit overdone, but there's a lot to like here.
Barry Cowsill - Just fun. I don't know that I'd search out the CD, but an enjoyable listen.
Buffy Sainte Marie - I wanted to rate her higher, but on this particular song, I just couldn't.
Chris Daughtry - It's fine. Nothing too special though.
Cold Mountain Soundtrack - I had high hopes for this one when I read the short description. I do like choral music and spirituals and religious music in general, but this particular style leaves me cold.
