I recently bought an ION turntable to copy my vinyl to MP3s. Although I have a regular turntable and listened occasionally to the records, I have been going through everything now, saving the albums and copying lots to my iPod. You forget some of the old songs when you don't hear them for a few years, and I have had a few surprises. Like how good some Quicksilver was, and also how bad other Quicksilver songs were. Whatever possessed me to buy a New York Dolls album; probably Vietnamese Baby, which isn't very good, but all the other songs are horrible. Forgot how much I liked Charlie Dore and Lone Justice. Spooky Tooth and McKendree Spring were just as good as I remembered, and Atomic Rooster was was just as hard to pin down as ever. Same with Mahavishnu Orchestra; they managed to hide great talent behind great pretensiousness. If only they would have thought a little less about the Cosmic Consiousness, and more about rocking the world. All in all, reviewing a lifetime of records has been eye opening!
Jon Allen - A coming of age song for 20 somethings. I love this Brit troubadour. Been a fan of his for a few years now
Ken Colyer – A really nice groove got me shaking it back and forth. The old style jook joint jazz ‘bones was quite cool and it had this total Dixieland vibe that rocked. Easily something I would look into for more sounds from the band.
Trouble - The song starts off with that nice thick bass line and then gets steeped into 1980s metal sound with the tips dipped in late 70s Y&T. Cool guitar work. Trouble was always one of those bands that was just good, but never good enough.
Lecca – I don’t know about anyone else, but this was actually a pleasant blip from an artist I have never heard of, but that I also gave the artist a thumbs down when I first saw her on the video before the music actually came on. I was totally wrong with my first impression.
The Osmonds – Nice choreography from a bunch of white boys from Utah. I’m just kidding, the J5 these guys are not. It seems like a fun song for the 70s Bubble Gum crowd, but nothing more.
Elvis - Sometimes I think Colonel Tom got money from some publishers to pick out songs to give to Elvis to push certain writers. I’m a big Elvis fan. Hell I had an Uncle who would do Elvis impersonations. This is not Elvis, this is someone else. Hangs head…, I’m sorry, I don’t like this song at all, but it’s still better than the two songs it beat.
Jonathan Butler – Very pretty, but also very very boring and tedious. I fancy my jazz music to be more Coltrane than Kenny G. It’s okay for some, but not at all for me.
Jon Schmidt – Thank you George Winston for bestowing upon us a whole bevy of New Age pianists who play 4-9 minute songs that go absolutely nowehere for two minutes than bore us with theme two only to come back to theme 1. Repetitive and redundant.
This was really a nice group of songs, and I enjoyed listening and voting a lot.
1- Jon Allen- This is what a song called Going Home should sound like. Sweetly sad, subdued, anticipatory. Very nice.
2- Elvis Presley- I have a ton of old Elvis vinyl, and just never really noticed this song before. Its slanted a bit toward the pop audience, but still, its Elvis doing what he always did, making every song he did an Elvis song. He's happy to be going home, and I feel it.
3- Lecca- I love the tone of her voice, sort of like Shakira at her best. Pretty song, I'd put it in my iPod.
4- Jonathan Butler- Great player, good song!
5- Ken Colyer- There are lots of very old songs that are just too dated for me to enjoy, but this isn't one of those. They were really getting into what they were doing, and I like it! Great voice too.
6- Trouble- Interesting, the more I listened to it, the more I enjoyed it.
7- The Osmonds- For your own peace of mind, I'd advise watching without the video the first time. The choreography (sp) is just creepy, maybe the weirdest I've ever seen. When I turned around in my chair and listened to the song without video, it became an overzealous attempt to be bluesy, eh rocking, eh .. I don't know what. I'm certainly not anti-Osmond, but this is a strange entertainment package, in whole and in part. Am glad I've seen it though, may never forget it.
8- Jon Schmidt- Not for me really. Its fine, but could be one of hundreds of mood songs you hear in a movie, a resturant, nothing really sets it apart. And yes, I have played piano for decades, am not an expert, but do appreciate the genru.
1) Trouble - This one rocked me. I even bought it on iTunes.
2) Jon Allen - Nice one here too.
3) Ken Colyer - did I ever mention that I like Leon Redbone?
4) Jonathan Butler - this sounded fine to me.
5) Elvis Presley - Never was a huge fan of Elvis' music. Liked his movies when I was a kid.
6) The Osmonds - better then I expected, but not exciting.
7) Jon Schmidt - relatively boring.
8) Lecca - thought I'd catch hell for including her, but I guess not.

1) Elvis Presley -- somebody has to put The King where he belongs, so I guess it's me.
2) Ken Colyer
3) Trouble
4) Jon Allen
5) The Osmonds
6) Jonathan Butler -- nice, tho' I keep thinking the last time I heard it, I was a phone captive on hold for 40 minutes.
7) Jon Schmidt
8) Lecca
Tim Burton was right: "A square jaw does not a Batman make." Steve Buscemi as the next Batman! Luke Perry as Joker! Let's make it happen!
2) Elvis - 42 pts, ranked #2 because of two first place votes vs none for #3.
3) Ken Colyer - 42 pts
4) Trouble - 33 pts
5) The Osmonds - 27 pts, ranked higher because of one second place vote vs none.
6) Jonathan Butler -27 pts
7) Lecca - 23 pts
8) Jon Schmidt - 14 pts
Dire Straits was meant for this match but Soxolas rushed me into putting them in the second match. On the other hand Sox's link was a lot better then the one I had so, whatcha gonna do?
