DC HeroClix Teen Titans: Gen 13′s Fairchild and Grunge!
Today we continue our look at the Gen-13 Team Base from the DC HeroClix: Teen Titans set! In our last article, we previewed the three figures that are packaged with the team base: #072 Burnout, #073 Sarah Rainmaker, and #74 Freefall. Now, the spotlight turns toward the last two members of the team, both of whom come in the standard five-figure booster packs.
You all can't see me right now, but I'm laughing. Sure, sure, sure, Fairchild's (arguably incredibly accurate) trait is something to laugh AT despite its usefulness...and sure, Grunge plays more like a transporter version of Absorbing Man than he probably should. But no, it's not that kind of laugh. It' a joyous laugh. The game just got a solid 100 point leadership, Imperv, Indom brick and an excellent way to destroy relics on top of another object-eater who, for 63 points (and 10.5 points per click!), can still be a real threat.
Complain all you want, nay-sayers, these are great!
Arguendo of the Beige Lanterns (Pedantry Corps)
Feb 2015: JL Trinity War has have given us the CSA, playable and together. Twice. ROCK ON!
REClixed: Justice for Dmitri Pushkin (your sacrifice will not be forgotten)! New generic Rocket Red @50-75 points while we're at it? Still no 19DV Defender? (WoS Groot doesn't count)
Power Girl AND Bust.
What a lot of people don't understand is that the names of these powers are just abstracts. Just because the power is called hyper-sonic speed doesn't mean that the figure has to be a speedster. They could be someone who is just hard to stop such as uncommon Spider-Man. Not everyone is a shape-shifter just because they have shape-change.
I think they did a great job with Fairchild, although I wish she was a little bit more threatening. Her trait is really perfect.
Grunge... unless they rebooted Gen13 at some point that I missed, I don't recall him absorbing objects or being able to sink into the ground. His SP, while useful, seems completely wrong, and the transporter ability is even more so. Somebody said in the Team base article that it looked like somebody pulled the power descriptions straight from Wikipedia - I'm thinking that's exactly what happened with the whole team. They really don't show a lot of imagination, and Grunge is really off. I'd rather see a special power that granted abilities based on the type of terrain he's adjacent to...
Molecular Bonding - Give Grunge a free action and choose one of the following effects: If Grunge is adjacent to blocking terrain, he may use Invulnerability and Super Strength. If Grunge occupies hindering terrain, he may use Stealth. If Grunge occupies clear terrain, he may use plasticity and may not be moved by any game effect until your next turn.
Or something like that, at any rate. It clumsily worded and still not right, but it would have represented the character much better.
That being said, I'm glad to have them in the game, and accurate or not, Grunge is a pretty good return on investment for 63 points.
And they gave him transporter why? Cause they show Freefall being sitting on his shoulder from time to time?
No, because there were frequent moments in the original run (J. Scott Campbell, not any of the reboots) where he did function in such a capacity. The main instance that pops out in my mind would be when the boys had to save the girls from Babyluv, Grunge melded with some putty and stretch-climbed an elevator shaft, carrying Bobby and Lynch the whole way. Granted, this sets the standard for Mr. Fantastic having transporter too, but... eh, why not?

Nope. Again, during the original series, Grunge was able to touch the ground and use it as a medium to sort of elongate his arms. Plus, fairly early on, it's mentioned that Grunge caught hell after Anna found him after he had melded himself into Caitlin's sheets.

For me it was back in armor wars when Nick Fury got Psychic blast to represent vibranium bullets. It is kind of hard to think some people still don't get it esp. when they give the power a neat little name.
grunge is kinda meh from the books I read. Fairchild is spot on though. For 100pts you get soooo much! I'm excited to play the team as a whole without the base just to see how they stack up.
