1) R.L. Burnside - Love me some Blues. This is gritty and raw in the best possible sense.
2) John Fahey - Killin' me (in the good sense) with these bluesy/bluegrass songs. There's something to be said for "less is more". This song shows that. Love the dog barking in the background, made it oddly "personal".
3) Shocking Blue - I dig this groove. Didn't know they had this in them. I, admittedly, always just wrote them off as being "that band that did Venus".
4) Split Enz - I was on board with this song until the chorus. For some reason I don't care for that part.
5) Elvis Presley - Not my favorite Elvis song, by any stretch of the imagination, but good clean fun.
6) Elvis Presley - I think they ranked so low for me because of Mr. Burnside being in the same list. lol
7) Mat Kearney - Not my thing, but still beats out #8.
8) Nick Drake - Just not my thing at all.
I really had no solid No. 1 here. There were a lot of tracks that would have been in the middle against most other songs in the SNDS track listings. In all 1-5 didn't blow me away and at any time another song could fit into #1 and vice versa for 5.
Shocking Blue - Nicely done and quite 60s psychedelic. Sounds like she’s saying Pool Boy. Still though, this is such a retro style song, that It easily gets a favorable nod here.
Elvis Presley - I thought this was another song and I expected to rate it lower. Gotta give credit here, because they tries to keep the song within the theme of the movie (a western), and at the same time, keep it somewhat rockabilly-ish. I’ve heard better, but this is a good decent song.
Nick Drake – I’m a big fan of his, and I love this arrangement with the Gospel-style chorus background and the jazz influenced music. BUT, it’s not a favorite of mine from him. I prefer when he keeps it more low-key.
John Fahey – He’s a great finger-picking player, and this song is a good example of his playing style. I like the slide guitar in the song too.
Chicken Shack – Too much homage to Hendrix and Voodoo Chile. Really, the best thing about the song is the solid drum work. Otherwise, the biggest problem with Chicken Shack is a total lack of direction. They didn’t know whether to be Hendrix or Cream or Ten Years After.
R.L. Burnside – I love old blues. And I really love when it’s done right. This is definitely done okay. It’s not spectacular and never got me in the right mood. The guitar work was nice, but not as heartfelt as a good blues song should be.
Split Enz – I saw these guys with my girlfriend of the time and her mum. Her mum loved them and called them the next Beatles. I thought they were okay and called them the next Not the Beatles. Too electronic for me.
I thought I could do this at work, but my Flash Player is now strangely inadequate. I'll have to do it tonight. I am going to go back in time and say something not very politically correct about 3rd world distributed IT....... OK, I won't, but its so frustrating.
Edit: Thanks for putting the first 2 or 3 of these out there. I think Chicken Shack and this Split Enz song are awesome. I never thought I would rate Elvis last in any contest, even with a couple of dogs thrown in. But I did not enjoy his offering at all. I guess it was the Colonel's idea, who knows?
1- Chicken Shack- They tease you into a little blues, and then throw a big rock wave out. Really, really like this one.
2- Split Enz- Edgy, catchy, really enjoyable!
3- Shocking Blue- Simmering psychedelia! I like it.
4- R. L. Burnside- Nice, driving blues.
5- John Fahey- Good enough. The song needed some more musical support.
6- Matt Kearney-I guess he's doing his own thing. Not awful, not that great. OK.
7- Nick Drake- Not nearly my style.
8- Elvis Presley- Not Elvis' finest hour.

Well, I guess that's everybody that participates these days. Just need VG9 to give me the numbers.
My apologies to Gargantua for assuming he was the slacker.
Once I get the numbers, I'll get a new one of these up Thursday or Friday.
