FEATURING Young Avengers 01 Style > Substance
The Young Avengers title was relaunched in 2013 as part of the Marvel Now! set of books. This is a title/concept that first made its debut in 2005, and the various characters introduced in the title have been trickling into HeroClix since the 5th Anniversary 2007 Avengers set. It's time to give this series an initial Comic Accurate / Longbox treatment, starting with a 200-point team of young lovers that can be seen after the link!
Synopsis: The Keiron Gillen/Jamie McKelvie 2013 relaunch of Young Avengers is a near-perfect modern take on the "teenage hero teamup" trope that was first explored five decades ago in the Legion of Super-Heroes. The Young Avengers titles have always been extremely derivative of other works, but the core titles have done it so well that any criticism on this front is muted.
This relaunch is firmly set in a post-Seige, post-Schism, post-Children's Crusade Marvel Universe, in which the various members of the Young Avengers are dealing with their feelings in assorted different ways that will be recognized by most of us who have gone through the young adult phase of life. This includes a couple of characters who wake up in low-earth orbit, listen to some tunes and fight off a Skrull atack. This pair forms a nice and simple 200-point force:
141 (WoS 038) Noh-Varr 57 (SI 023) Hawkeye
= 198 Points
Note: The "Hawkeye" is Kate Bishop, not "Hawkguy" Clint Barton.
There are few character names with as complicated a legacy as Marvel Boy, and one of the bearers of that title featured here, Noh-Varr, has put his own unique spin on that heavily foot-noted biography with his own baker's dozen set of code names. In this book, all you need to know is that Noh-Varr is the golden boy, the "beautiful alien dancing boy", and the character that (eventually, not in this issue) utters what is sure to be the quote this series is destined to be known for:
The only version of Noh-Varr that undisputedly exists in HeroClix is from the 2010 Web of Spider-Man booster set. This figure is a classic HeroClix tentpole, albiet one with a few short-comings. It has the 2013-PAC-awesome top-dial combination of Pulse Wave/Energy Explosion/Psychic Blast with 10-movement Running Shot and 8...but is hindered by his :m-foot:. This makes it harder to pull of alpha-strikes, and there is no doubt that opponents will play very cautiously against him, especially on this 200-point force.
There is absolutely no reason not to trigger his Traitor to All to grant Noh-Varr an extra +1 to attack values. This only helps, and will be noticeable towards the end-dial when his attack values start to sag.

(errata) Traitor to All: During your first turn, you may choose that Noh-Varr loses all keywords this game. If you do, modify his attack value by +1 this game.
Transforming Gauntlet Gun: Noh-Varr can use Energy Explosion, Penetrating/Psychic Blast, and Pulse Wave.
Pairing up with Noh-Varr in this issue is Kate Bishop as Hawkeye, who has also only been made a single time in HeroClix. Her only appearance to date is from the 2008 Secret Invasion set. Most of the characters with the Young Avengers keyword have unfortunately been punished with generally weak (for the modern era) combat values, but Hawkeye does start with Focused Training which allows her to improve any combat value she needs...at least while top-dial.
On this force, she won't be doing much except running interference for Noh-Varr, which is somewhat unfortunate given that she has routinely been shown to be the most brutally competent member of any Young Avengers member in any comic.

Focused Training: Hawkeye can use Perplex, but she can modify only her own combat values.
A two-figure team with two ranged-based combatants is probably not a great idea, but the (modern) HeroClix game is very different at 200-points. As long as these two figures are not facing a highly mobile vehicle-based team, they should stand a decent chance of giving as good as they get. There is an easy way to bring this team up to the more common 300-point game, that also improves their chances...
One of the core characters of the 2013 Young avengers relaunch is Kid Loki, who was recently made as the first Limited Edition prize in the Fear Itself play event. Kid Loki doesn't have a Hel Wolf with him in this comic, but the character spends the first several issues transporting around all over the place, so the dial is more accurate than the sculpt represents. The full-dial version of the figure is an even 100 points, and even though Kid Loki didn't start hanging out with Noh-Varr and Hawkeye until a little later in the series, it's no great thematic stretch to add this character to the force.

The Speed of the Hel-Wolf: Loki's attack value is not modified by the Move and Attack ability.
Loki can transport either of the other two members of the force, although he is also slightly hindered by his . The larger base of the transporter offers some protection from lines-of-fire, which can help Noh-Varr position for alpha strikes. This Loki also brings an unmodified move-and-attack option, and if he gets based he has the option instead. The damage-track support powers are useful, but like the trickster himself, they are somewhat unreliable.
Noh-Varr is such a beast Everyone remember that month of the IG tourneys when it became my Big G w/Gauntlet, GG GF Strange, and Noh-Varr as the Herald vs. Your Big G w/ Gauntlet, GG GF Strange, and Noh-Varr as the Herald? Weee creativity haha.
Regardless. Good article
Request:
Midnight Sons team from Marvel Zombies 4 (Morbius, Daimon Hellstrom, Werewolf by Night, Jennifer Kale..feat. Man-Thing)
Both Visions, and Speed from CW are GREAT pieces for their price, IMO of course. However, I like the format. It's simple, concise, and asks the reader to do much of the work. Nice job.
Yes this was a well written article. I have to be honest, when I saw a young avengers longbox title I said to myself "finally those underrated figures will get the recognition they deserve!"You can imagine my disappointment when I discover no mention of Wiccan. A beautiful support piece that offers a team enhancement, probability control, support and group teleportation. Stature is an extremely cheap Giant with plasticity and shapechange! Speed is a decent hypersonic speed piece and hulkling has shapechange with invulnerability. Perhaps im just being impatient and you will include them in future articles. Im so tired of hearing hatred for those figures when I've seen them get a sentry/void figure down to his last four clicks by themselves. Nonetheless I always thoroughly enjoy these articles. You chose to build a completely modern legal team...even though these just don't feel like the young avengers. But they are all great figures. That loki is ridiculously good with the right set up and proper use of his move and attack ability.

i totally agree. the only young avenger clix i don't care for is my favorite character patriot

When Fighting with Hawkeye, I find she gets ignored pretty often, especially when something as powerful as Noh-varr as a bigger threat or distraction.
An interference role seems like a waste on the top click for someone who can break most reducers. now I would agree on an interference role if she is not top click. its a shame that the sharpshooter ability was not around when she was made, would make the second and third click some Starlord style fun
in a 200 point game, she can pull her weight. (check out my blog for more details on how to run her as well as the rest of the Young Avengers lol)
