HCR Rates The Movies Is Back! Come and share your thoughts on a TON of films, new and old! Our latest movie - BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
I just got back from seeing it today, and I give it a 4.
It ranged from incredibly stupid to almost decent. I'd probably rate it less if not for the stinger.
During the bullet train sequence, I was rooting for the Yakuza. Lasting that long against Wolverine alone is impressive, but the way he did it, as a nameless scmuck, made me want him to win. He wanted it more.
The movie is very mockable, but not so bad that you feel angry it exists. It's still a good time, but not for the right reasons.

I'll have disagree and say I rather liked it. I found the plot to be perfectly fine, and the pacing was good. There has been griping about 'slow' scenes, and I found them to flow quite well with the combat sequences.
Overall probably my favorite of the X-men franchise, and the mid credits spoiler was awesome

Trask industries showcasing weapons and a robotic arm was brilliant. Then having Magneto and Professor X show up was great. Very well sets the stage for the next X-men film, Days of Future Past
Not the best film ever, but far more enjoyable than the Batman films. The Jean Grey scenes actually fit in very well. Even my wife said so, and that they make perfect sense with how he's questioning himself and if he wants to move forward with life. Then again, I like Logan when he's trying to be more than a sawed off angry little man, and that is what this film was.
I give it an 8/10. I'll own it when it comes out, and it's made me want to get a copy of the Miller/Claremont mini series to read.

Now admittedly, I'm not a huge Wolverine fan, but the movie entirely failed to engage me at all. While the most recent Batman franchise certainly had it's stupid moments, it still had me engaged with the characters and caring what would happen next.
In the Dark Knight, when Gordon supposedly dies, it's done very well. I remember going "What?" and being shocked and sad in the theater. "How could they kill Gordon?" I should have known that it was fake, I had seen Gordon destroying the Bat Signal in the trailer after all, but I was so drawn in, I forgot about it. And of course, when he's revealed to be alive, it's a big hurrah moment. The Dark Knight was predictable, but made me ignore those parts by drawing me into the story.
The Wolverine didn't do that. Every bad guy practically screams "I'm evil!" Every twist was broadcast a mile away. Each beat was obvious.

Suspicious guy get spotted by Logan, who doesn't seem to care. Obviously there is going to be an attack at the funeral, and it's not going to be from the guy.
They get on a bullet train, and Wolverine is like "300 miles an hour, right?" Obviously gonna fight outside the train.
Logan and Mariko go outside amidst a ton of other people when they are supposed to be hiding. She's obviously going to get got.
Logan and Mariko get caught in the rain. They are obviously going to ####.
What's her face sees Logan die. He doesn't.
It did have a few good moments. The selection of the hotel rooms was probably my favorite part. I liked the fight between Mariko's father and the chick with red hair. That was well done. And while you knew who the winner of that fight was going to be, because obviously Wolverine was going to get up and end it, you didn't know how that fight was going to end.
When it comes to the Batman films, Bale isn't the greatest, but the supporting cast is excellent. I didn't like Iron Man 3, but RDJ made the movie bearable. With The Wolverine, the supporting cast was mostly "meh", and I didn't find Jackman interesting enough to make up for that. The rest of the movie was very hit or miss with me, and because the characters didn't grab me, I'm less forgiving of the misses.
I can honestly say that the character I cared most about in this movie was the Yakuza on the train.
See, I found the Batman films to be tirelessly dark and predictable. The first two were good, but by the third it was just no fun anymore. Everyting was so telegraphed, as you complain about Wolverine, save it was done to see how dark and grim they could make it. That looses enjoyment overtime.
I won't say this is a monumental film, but it provides a good escape into a story with a grim hero that doesn't have to loose itself in it's bleakness. It can still have fun with itself and like Downey, I think Jackman captures Logan very well.
Wolverine does die, he just gets better in true Logan fashion.

Dark Knight Rises gets stupider with each new viewing, but has the benefit of Gary Oldman and Anne Hathaway. I'll say that the pacing of The Wolverine is probably better that TDKR, and Jackman is more interesting than Bale. But I wouldn't rate The Wolverine over EVERY Batman film. That's too far.

No, I think it's just different tastes for different people. It's perfectly reasonable that you liked Batman more than I did, and that I liked The Wolverine more than you did.
Nothing wrong with that. The Batman films aren't my favorite comic films, and that's fine. I liked the lighter tone and pace of The Wolverine. For me, the fact it wasn't trying to take itself as morbidly serious as Batman is a good thing.
Gary Oldman does make a lot of things better, and it's nice he got to play a good guy for a change with the series.

It was completely different than I expected it to be via setting and characters. The introduction of a lot of villains was very interesting.

It defied my expectation. It had a good story, good character development (not just for Wolvie), good pacing and a good amount of action. I'd say they had balance the action and the talking scenes. The fight scene on top of the bullet train is defying the law of physics but I didn't care... it was fun to watch. Am a bit disappointed with the Silver Samurai but then again, I was never a fan of any of the characters... so I still enjoyed it.
I was disappointed honestly. I loved the first Wolverine movie. I thought it was well done and it probably helped that I had no vested interest in Deadpool, so how he was treated is inconsequential to me.
This movie just lacked excitement and really never drew me in. I expected the samurai aspect to be instrumental, since it is a big part of Wolverine's past. His relationship with Mariko was forced. I just found myself not really caring too much about the characters or the outcomes.
4/10

Well, in the movieverse, the samourai influence does not seem to be present prior to this movie.
Also what made this movie a lot better then the previous one, is that they did not mess up many characters. I can live with some changes, but the way the phoqed up Deadpool was extremely bad, Blob being fat due to the lost of a stripper he loved?! Very bad FX, Gambit cartwheeling in midair , stupid ladder slashing, unfinished effects on claws.... Origins started real well, but once the adamantium got in Wolverine, it went domn to hell.
The Wolverine had a better story, good fight scenes, a love story that was important in the story without being cheesy and a very teasing easter egg.
Infinitely better than the last Batman movie (which was abysmal) and I'd rate it much higher than the Man of Steel as well (which IMO was barely a notch above the last Batman movie). I thoroughly enjoyed it. 7/10
Trade to Canada. We're friendly, and we love Beavers..........
I'll go with 7.75 out of 10. Much, much better than xmen origins wolverine, which was terrible on most levels.
The only real complaint I have is, why is Viper even in this movie? Not really necessary, she doesn't add anything or have any purpose for being there.
Also, the Macguffin is a little silly in my opinion.
Other than that, I thought the character development was well done, I cared about Yukio and Mariko, and I thought it was interesting having Wolverine be vulnerable. We both liked it.
