Astonishing X-Men #9 - "The Land Before Time"

The Genengineer entered the fortified lab complex followed closely by "Bud". The place was fascinating. It was full of equipment and monitors that he knew would take him a while to figure out, but he certainly meant to do it. Not now though, right now he was hurried and paranoid, sure that the X-men were close behind. Their advanced jet would have had no problem tracking and outpacing his meager aircraft, all he had was a few miles of dense jungle slowing them down now.

"See if you can find a control room. We need to get this place's defenses up before our new friends arrive." Bud looked around, the lab didn't seem quite so welcoming to him as it did the Genengineer. The place had clearly been abandoned for some time. Everything was covered in a thick layer of dust, and jungle flora seemed to have snuck in every opening of the outer walls. Bud knew that the defenses were important, but his survival instinct was screaming at him to leave this place. Against his better judgement, he started off toward where he thought a control room, or central defense room at least, might be.

"I'll be here in the lab when you find it. I want to inspect these wonderful machines!" The Genengineer moved further into the open area of the lab unaware that his every move was being monitored by the complex's previous occupant.

Shanna brought the group to a sudden halt a few dozen feet from the edge of the tree line. "Stone fortress in clearing ahead." Cyclops moved up to the edge of the tree line and looked out at the complex. It was a sprawling concrete structure surround by a 20 foot high reinforced fence. Warning signs marked them as electrified. He could make out security cameras on the fence, but there were no sentries. If he hadn't had Shanna's word that the Genengineer was here he would have thought the place completely abandoned. On closer inspection though, the fences were covered in jungle vines, clearly no longer carrying a deadly current. The complex itself seemed to have been covered partially in vines with some flora even managing to reach into the small windows. Scott walked back to the group and shared his thoughts.

"Okay guys, there's really no good way to get in to this place. Seems like the only way in is either over the wall or through it. After that our cover will be blown so we might as well just charge straight through the doors, and hope for the best."

"It is a sound strategy. I prefer to take my enemies head on!" Colossus had been walking through the jungle in his flesh form to make the traveling easier, but at the mention of battle he immediately transformed into the more customary steel clad giant. "I wish to take the lead."

"Now hold it there, bub." Wolverine moved forward still growling, "Ain't nobody getting' to that experimentin' sonofa**** before me! You can have that wall if you want, but I'm leadin' charge in to his fancy lab!" Wolverine had the same look in his eye as he did when he had tried to chase down the Genengineer's plane, and there would be no talking him down.

"Peter, I think it's best if we just concede this one to Logan. You take out the wall around the complex, and we'll follow you. Logan take the lead from there, I'll blast down the complex wall in front of you so you can lead the way in. We'll need you on point inside to find the Genengineer anyway." Cyclops looked around at his team, and then over to Shanna, "Shanna, will you be joining us inside?"

"Shanna will destroy evil doctor." The look in her eyes left no doubt in his mind. Two members of his party wanted blood, and there wasn't much he could do to stop them.

"I guess I'll just have to deal with that when the time comes," Scott said quietly to himself. "Alright then, Colossus, take the lead and let's get going!"

"Who are you, and what business do you have in this place?" The voice came from everywhere at once. The Genengineer was caught off guard, and backed away from all of the nearby equipment.

"I repeat; why are you here?" The voice was cold and distant, and Genengineer was fooled for a moment into thinking it was a pre-recorded security system. Perhaps Bud had found the security station already. But when several computer monitors sprang to life all bearing the expressionless face of the High Evolutionary, he knew he was being questioned by a living intelligence.

"I am the Genengineer! I come seeking shelter. My lab on Genosha has been compromised and I am pursued by the enemies of our cause! Then I remembered your research outpost here... I, I was once your lab assistant, Dr. David Moreau. Don't you remember me?" The self proclaimed Genengineer felt a bit foolish exclaiming into the empty room, but quickly felt even more foolish as he locked eyes with the High Evolutionary and found only a distant recollection.

"Ah.. "The Genengineer", yes I remember you. You had some talent with a scalpel blade. Took a transfer to work with Professor Warren if I recall correctly? I hope you've been well. But that still doesn't explain why you've trespassed on my property." High Evolutionary tilted his stony mask of a face as new information registered through his senses. A distant spark of curiosity lurked somewhere in his inhuman eyes. "And what is this grouping of mutant phenotypes that is following you?"

"Sir, I.. They destroyed my lab on Genoshia. I came in search of a new lab! Will you lend me your assistance sir, High Evolutionary?"

"I regret that I'm quite busy at my Wundagore facility at the moment," the High Evolutionary said in a bored tone and let the moment hang for an oddly long time. "But I would prefer my laboratory and specimens in the Savage Land not to be destroyed. If you can drive off your pursuers and perhaps clean the place up a little, I might consider finding a place for you amongst my current projects. If you proceed down into the Gene Bank area you will find my previous assistants Dr. Karl Lykos and Dr. Vincent Stegron, who can lend you a hand." The Monitor went dark and the connection was cut. Another panel on the wall came on and the readout gave details of cells and specimens in the complex. It seemed that the High Evolutionary would extend him the sanctuary he needed!

Another panel marked with, "Imprint Specimen Master" was beside the first, and a hand scanner had folded out below. The Genengineer quickly moved over and placed his hand on the scanner. After the scan completed he moved back over to the specimen panel, and without even reading the descriptions of specimens, he released them all. He could always round them up later, after the X-men were driven off. Sharp clicks, and several different types of animals noises could be heard from around the room. Bud came running back in to the lab at that moment,

"Sir, they're here they just busted through the outer wa..."

BOOM!

And explosion shook the building and left the lab wall in rubble. Bud was lifted off his feet and thrown back against the opposite wall, stunning him. The Genengineer himself had been thrown back several feet but was at least able to pick himself up and face his pursuers.

"Knock knock, bub." *Snickt*Snickt*

Actions:
1.) Ariel will phase to H19, taxiing Cyclops to G18.
"Ariel, can you phase me forward into those bushes?"
"Is that even a real question? You guys still underestimate me after all this time!"

2.) Colossus will pick up the HO and run to J15.
Colossus sees Ariel and Cyclops phasing forward through the underbrush. It seems the attack is on! Colossus charges forward to take his position at the blasted wall. Along the way he sees a large boulder, "This will do well against whatever waits for us inside, yes."

Ax-Men Turn 3a

Actions:
1.) Colossus will Charge to H12 targeting Skull Brother with the HO. 9 on a 17, rolls: 5,3=8, for a hit. 5 damage -1 for toughness. Skull-Brother (3/7). Colossus nets 4xp. Skull-Brother loses his perplex and Sauron loses the +1. The HO is destroyed.
Story:
"Colossus, I need you to charge in and take out the sentry just inside the wall!"
"I am on it." Colossus charges forward and hops down into the lab. Just inside the door he runs in to.. well.., "What has this man become?" Without waiting to find
out Peter slams the boulder into the thing's chest doing considerable damage. "Scott, I have it pinned down. I don't know for sure what these.. er.. things, are."

2.) Cyclops will Running Shot to I13 targeting The Genengineer with Energy Explosion. Everyone on your team will get caught in the AoE.
10atk onto Sauron(16), Skull Brother(16), Genengineer(17, +1 hindering, -1 Ult X TA= 17), Gorilla Man(17+1 hindering= 18), Lockheed(15, +2 ES/D, +1 hindering= 18). Rolls: 6,2=8 for hits on everyone! Buuut Genengineer probs that. New roll: 6,6=12!!! I never get crit hits! Damage: Genengineer takes the natural 4+1 for crit -1 for toughness (1/5) knockback to D6. Sauron 3-1 for toughness, (5/7) knockback to E7. Skull-Brother 3-1 for toughness (1/7) knockback into the wall at his current position for 1 damage and the KO! Gorilla Man 3-1 for toughness (6/8) knockback to K10. Lockheed takes 3 and is KO'ed. Scott gets 4+2+2+2+3=13 Exp + 4xp for the KOs. Total of 17xp. I haven't gotten a chance until now to use the new EE, but wow... that was crazy...
Story:
"It's probably more of that mad man's spliced monsters. I'm coming in, take cover Peter." Cyclops runs forward to the rim of the busted wall. He sees the Genengineer standing behind some rubble in the middle surrounded by his abominations. Enraged by the sight of the mutated people he unleashes the full power of his optic force blasting the Genengineer, and all of his minions.

3.) Wolverine runs up to I12 and is stopped by the hindering terrain in Stealth.
Story:
Wolverine see Cyclops blast the room with a bit more power than normal. After he drops into the room and finds an ambush position behind some rubble he looks
out and sees half of the lab's defenders laying in heaps. "Nice job, Slim. I didn't think you had the stomach for that kind of thing." Wolverine was impressed, but more than a little upset that he wouldn't get the chance to take down these freaks himself!

Beast, Ariel, and Shanna clear.

Yeah that was a crazy EE crit hit lol basically a bomb going off in the middle of your squad I've just done it again this turn too... hehe.. This Cyclops is fricken crazy.

Actions:
1.) Colossus is going to push and swing at Sauron. 9 on a 15, needs a 6 to hit. Rolls: 6,2=8
Colossus hits for 3 -1 for toughness putting Sauron at (3/7) and earning 2xp. Colossus takes the push to go to (7/8).
Story:
"Cyclops, I will soften enemy for you." Colossus took a step forward and met the approaching enemy with a thundering right hook to the jaw. The beast didn't drop, but it was surely shaken by the attack.

2.) Cyclops will push for another EE, this time targeting Sauron. It will be 10 onto; Sauron(14), Wolverine(15 +1 hindering= 16), Genengineer(17 -1 Ult X-Men= 16), Gorilla-Man(16), Colossus(17 +1 hindering=18)
Needs a 6 to hit all three enemies and Wolvie, 8 to hit Colossus. Rolls:2,4=6. Cyclops rolls just high enough to hit all three enemies and Wolvie. Sauron takes the full force for 4 -1 for toughness, but still enough for the KO. Genengineer takes 2 splash damage and is KO'ed. Gorilla-Man takes 2 splash -1 for toughness to put him at (5/8).
Wolverine takes 2 -1 for toughness putting him at (5/6). The attack earns 3+2+1=6 for damage, and another 4 for the KO's netting Cyclops 10xp for the attack. Scott takes the push and goes to (5/6).
Story:
"Take cover guys, I'm going to try and blast them all again." Scott saw Colossus drop back behind cover, but Wolverine decided to charge out at the Gorilla-Man.
