I am proposing that WK knew about the QC issues. I HAVE NO PROOF. This is just speculation.
Suppose you were WK, your excited about a new release, you have your biggest tournament of the year coming up, and everyone is excited. Then out of the blue you catch word that some things are not quite right with the expansion that is ready to be shipped.
Surely you cannot allow this blunder to be seen at your big event... what are you to do, I mean I suppose you could always just push the release date back.
This is speculation, however, why else would they push the set back if some places were able to get it on time? If I knew something was wrong I wouldn't want to showcase a giant blunder at my big party.
Just a thought... but still these are the questions.
Given that I know quite a few people (well into the twenties) at various venues around the US that got their product on the previous release date (Aug 14th) there's clearly nothing wrong with the shipping to delay the set.
You might be on to something. We'll never know of course, but from a save face situation (especially at Gencon where there's already plenty of complaints) I can see it.
And they did post pics on twitter when they were sampling product from WatXM, I'm willing to bet they knew.
Let's just hope that means they'll have a jump on fixing the problem...
...man, it was hard to keep a straight face typing that last bit
Nostradumass prognostications to others. I opened lots of this product and did NOT experience anything beyond one figure broken off a base (fixed with two drops super glue) and one missing card. A bummer to be sure, but it was just Layla Miller, not Chase Colossus.

And here I thought it was a discussion on how WizKids helped fake the Moon Landing...
Apollo Astronaut: "Command, we are now unpacking the Lunar Rover and....uhhh...command...we have a problem here. The Rover seems to be missing one wheel and the steering column."
Command Control: "Someone get Wizkids on the phone. Find out what their replacement policy is!"

As a company, you normally need to address issues internally, before issuing press statements (damage control). It's going to take at least 2-3 weeks to assess how severe/widespread QC issues are, since WatX officially released only yesterday.
I don't think this is any different than usual, just worse.
WK always delays releases. WK always has QC issues. Usually they're a bit more isolated than it seems with WatXM, it does seem like there's been some definite system-wide issues due to the prevalence of identical errors being reported (extra Cerise's, SRs without Cards, Cards without SRs.)
I can only hope they'll come up with a way to fix it before next set, and offer some kind of fair replacement policy in this set.
I'm as much in the anti-WK camp as anybody, but I have a hard time swallowing it.
Nobody wants to believe it. It would be crappy if it were indeed true. We will never know, but I still feel the need to chat it out with moar smarter people on here.
