FIELD MEDIC, STAGE TRAINING: Alfred Pennyworth can use Shape Change and Support; when he uses Support, he can treat friendly characters within 4 squares and line of fire as if they were adjacent and increases the damage healed by +1 for each action token on the target.
So... can I use this ability if Alfred is not adjacent to any opposing characters, targeting a friendly who -is- adjacent to an opposing character, provided LoS, etc?
The way the power is worded, it leads me to think that, for the action, the target is considered adjacent to Alfred and, thusly, no longer adjacent to opposing characters. Would I be correct or does it work 'normally' like support, short of the range and bonus to the heal roll, of course?

Im pretty sure normal adjacency rules still apply. Unless anything is ever specified, neither fig in the action of Support can be adjacent to an opposing character, even in this case. All this is helping with, really, is taking away the need to move adjacent.

You're going to treat the target as if they were adjacent to Alfred so he can use Support, but nothing there changes any other adjacency that exists. If an opposing character is adjacent to the target then no Support.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
