I have started this thread to see what others think about this. I won a Shuma Gorath in the 1st tournament. A few days later I entered another tournament after being badgered to join one so I made up a team with my Shuma on it. Other players seemed miffed by this and let me know about it (as far as to call me a jerk). The impression I got was some players seem to think they are owed a Shuma. I will obviously sell my spare one on the AH.
Am I being out of line for having more than one or are tournaments with big prizes fair game for whatever you want to play?
Unless you and your opponents agree to not use Shuma-Gorath, I see nothing unfair about using S-G for the tourney (to win another S-G). He and Holiday Elf are my favorite Mystics combo @ 300 pts, currently.
Shuma is going have limited availability (like Sentinel and Thanos), but is more coveted due to being playable in lower builds. However, using this method to get several S-Gs solely for sales, trades, etc. may be a bit much. My rule is that I play in order to win the character to use it; if I'm lucky enough to get a second, I can sell or trade it.
If HCO had "global sticky" feature for players to post notes-- avoiding the pitfalls of losing global chat when logging out/back in-- players would realize what they are getting themselves into. Anyone who joins a tourney blindly and complains after the fact is setting themselves up for disappointment.
I'm curious: What prize are you aiming for? Currently Shumas are going for several hundred CBs in the auction house... So I can definitely see why wen people who want a Shuma see someone who apparently already owns a Shuma try to win another one just to turn around and sell it consider it poor form.
On the other hand, I do expect people to bring out their worst cheese in a tournament. I'm not playing the Constructed tournaments unless I think I have a team that can deal with the worst cheese out there.
I did try to come to a gentlemens agreement in the Lobby for the Thanos tournament were we agreed not to use HoT Cap. Unfortunately, someone who hadn't read the chat and was playing Cap stole my spot. You could try something like that for Shuma too, but it will be equally difficult to pull off.
Of course, when the final game is a mirror match that is not particularly fun for either party...
If you are paying money to enter a tournament, I think you have to play whatever team gives you the most satisfaction. After all, what happens if you build a team to make someone else happy... and then you don't even play them?
The tournaments already have build parameters. As long as your team meets those rules, I don't think anyone should fault you for playing any legal team. One exception would be if 4 guys got together and said "We are adding our own house rules for this tournament. Nobody bring SG or NC, etc.". If you agree to those parameters... and then you bring one of those figures, that is not cool. Aside from that, you have to bring whatever team you would like. You paid money to have fun. Different people have fun in different ways.
I think that before you decide to enter a tournament, you have to realize that you don't get to choose your opponent. Your opponent might have fun in a different way than you do. That doesn't make them bad or lack honor. It just means they see things differently.
Amen, mwposse! I never understood a guy/girl that sets limits on his/her own builds thinking that everyone else has to build according to his rules as well. I say enter a tourney and win as many times as you like and play whatever you want according to the limits of the tourney.
