Ep. 137 Top 10 Favorite Heroclix of 2013 and the Final 3 DC Fan vote choices!
This week Steve and Jeremiah talk about the DC Fan vote, it's down to 3 characters, Some Christmas talk and their top 10 Favorite Heroclix of 2013! It's not what you think! Tune in!
Great podcast! I loved some of your choices for best figures, spider-man 2099 is a beast with a sprinkle of finesse. I often play him with the golden age 2099 set pieces such as Hulk, Doom, ravage and Ghost rider. Mephisto was also a superb choice! He can play a board control piece from the safety of his own starting zone. Strategic anticipation of who your opponent will choose is key....your opponent is stuck between allowing him to mind control one of his pieces or giving your weakest guy a stat boost. The giant sized ability also makes him even more of a monster. Stealth, poison, impervious and outwit is a great combo! Sitting in hindering mephisto can rarely be outwitted due to his cosmic-lite mid dial special and stealth....great piece. The sculpt is the true form of mephisto!
The 102 point Fixer has a "terrible" dial? Have you played it? Stealth and an 18 invulnerable defense (using his own perplex) Standing next to mentallo fixer has the following attack values:10,10,11,11,10,9. That's insane for a 100 point figure. Outwit, perplex, shape change, regeneration, mind control and psychic blast....ALL of this for 102 points. Keep in mind that this dial is good for the points alone, I'm not even considering his ability to bring objects in while sitting in stealth. What's terrible about the dial again?

It takes another 71 points of sub-par attack values to get to that point. And the object switching power is subject to age restrictions, and is useless in modern age.
I've played him with and without Mentallo. I don't know that I'd call him "terrible," but he's not very good.

Yeah, terrible might not be accurate. But you have to be playing him in a pretty high point game for him to not feel like a point sink. And considering I play 400 point games a good portion of the time, he has almost never looked like a good option.

That 71 point "sub-par" figure is a stealth buster that can outwit it, or mind control the opponent to walk out in the open so fixer can psychic blast them into oblivion. I don't know...maybe its just me....fixer koed a damaged 299 point sentry and blasted cable to his hypersonic clicks. Maybe I just get lucky with shape change and regeneration more so than others. They both seem great to me...
Edit: actually it makes perfect sense now why I have a different opinion. My venue only plays modern age during sealed events (based on sets that everybody likes) but we have to play golden age the majority of the time because not all members can afford brand new figures every set.
I've also started to notice that my play style differs from a lot of players. Many players look for the most efficient piece comparatively... in that case you can ALWAYS find a better piece but your teams will start to have the boring stench of meta. I love to used underestimated pieces and catch my opponents by surprise. A bad piece becomes a good piece with the right synergetic team! Make no mistake...I'm not saying mentallo and fixer are 'bad' pieces. I happen to think that they are great for their point values.

Excellent podcast! I look forward to these quite a bit. You never disappoint. I learn something new every time I listen to you guys. Thanks for your hard work and dedication to the game.

Funny thing. The night I played my "Excaliber" team I went up against a Fixer/Mentallo combo. And yes what you described is exactly what happen. Unfortunately this was the only team I beat that night and I beat it by KO'ing one of the two, which killed the combo thing they had going on leaving (I think Fixer, can't remember which one I KO'd first) on their own and the game went down hill for that team fast. IN the defense of that team it was a HYDRA team which was a booster as well as there was a lot of HYDRA team ability happening. It just wasn't enough though and I was able to take the team down.
Does that say fixer is awful? No he was very effective, but once i saw what he was capable of, I just repositioned and charged in to take one of the two characters out. I would probably try that combo out on my own sometime to be honest.
Is he better than the new FORGE? I don't think so, but that's sort of what we were talking about. If anything I think they are about the same to be honest. I would have liked Forge to have had a Fixer like power.
One thing to remember that mostly at my venue we play all golden age matches, but with a set of specialized rules, that being no Feat Cards on any character that is already "carded" and we usually use Highlander rule. So Fixer at our events could be a ton of fun!
Totally agree with your comment on boring teams and tactics that meta use and I like what you had to say because a lot of it is so true.
Just to contradict Jeremiah I will say I have not had enough Batman and Iron Man. As long as the set surrounding the main character is good I will happily take more of each. In fact they should make a set based on Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller! Carrie Kelly as Robin! Mutant gang generics! Mutant gang leader! Rob and Don duo fig! Joker in a white suit! That fat guy with the creepy flying dolls! One-armed Oliver Queen with Kryptonite arrow! President Reagan! And more versions of Batman and Superman! And I want the CTD box design to have the classic Dark Knight Returns silhouette logo on it...
Thanks for another fun episode! Looking forward to your 5 worst clix!
