New to both Attack Wing and X-wing, but I am jumping in head over heels. I know FFG does not plan to discontinue X-wing ships so any out of stock is temporary. However is Wizkids going to do a Heroclix model and we will start to see some ships no longer available for sale. I ask because at this point I only plan to play with 24th century ships (yes you could say I am the mirror universe of thugit with his TOS) but in the future.......

To my knowledge, WK has not announced if AW will be "ever-green" or if ships will eventually be out of print.
On that note, even though some ships may not fit into the time period you are currently collecting, I'd still suggest picking up some that may have upgrades which you are interested in using eventually. Ship design and Captain/Crew may change but you can always make a case that technology (Weapon/Tech) is something that may not be as time period specific.
With the game still being in its infancy, it's hard to tell. I still see all the ships at various shops around here as well as online retailers, so I don't think they are going to sell out anytime soon.
While it is a WK product, it is being handled by a different design team so your best guess is just as good as mine at this point.
Thanks for the update and suggestions guys. I did play heroclix but got tired of power creep and the "gotta catch em all" mentality of that game and was hoping to try to limit myself this go around. Luckily there is not the dearth of product out their to make me spend a small fortune.
They might now make older ships at some point but I see no way they could remove old cards. They are not numbered or identified. I think as time goes on and as some older ships become less and less in demand they will stop being made as there is no reason to make new copies of things on pegs.
Magic is not for Parlor Tricks~

Yeah, I guess they could do it by Wave, but there's nothing on the cards to show what wave something came in. Seems like a lot of work on the part of the organizers to compare lists to waves and what not.

Expanding on this, certain cards are duplicated in expansions across waves such as advanced weapons system. There is no way they could retire wave 0 without also retiring certain cards from wave 2.

Unfortunately, I am cynical when it comes to Wizkids, so I would not at all be surprised if some day we see re-releases of already made ships but with a power creep. After all by redoing ships, they sale more to those who missed the ships the first time, and by doing the power creep they make the re-release appealing to veteran players. I do not like this idea, but if Wizkids is anything, they are greedy; lack of professional play testers, lack of quality control, lack of editing, etc, etc, to make more profit only proves this.
But they don't need power creep to sell ships that they've already made, they can just release different named versions of ships of the same class, with new (or different versions of) existing upgrades. I'm sure a number of people wouldn't mind a second D'Deridex, and there are plenty of Romulans to draw from for crew and captains. They just have to come up with a new ability for the new named ship, but there's no reason that they have to make it more powerful than the Khazara.
I understand that both HeroClix and Attack Wing are WizKids games, but it seems that using trends in one to make predictions in another is unwise. They are run by entirely different teams.

I think this is a key point.
AW is an entirely different designer, who as far as we know hasn't been involved in any other wizkids game.
AW is an entirely different purchase model then heroclix, a model we haven't really seen from them, so we don't have any evidence about how they will handle it.
so i think concerns are valid, but we shouldn't draw too much from what we know of "wizkids" since this game differs on a number of levels.
The universe is governed by a tendency toward disorder, we refer to the quantification of that tendency as Entropy Boston Heroclix

I have talked a little with the designer. Between that and what I have seen so far, I think I trust the designer to try and maintain a good balance with no obvious creep. But, I am still cynical that the higher ups at Wizkids/Neca are going to pressure the design team to make more money and they will refer to the Heroclix model as the one the game design of Attack Wing should follow.
