Star Trek: Attack Wing
I.R.W. Gal Gath’thong/Romulan Bird of Prey Class Ship
4 of 4 Wave 3 Star Trek: Attack Wing Expansion Packs
Releases: February 2014
This week we finish up our look into the Wave 3 expansions for Star Trek Attack Wing. The final ship is none other than the I.R.W. Gal Gath’thong Expansion Pack taken right from the original series episode, Balance Of Terror. Fittingly, the I.R.W. Gal Gath’thong will be a terror on the battlefield thanks to its ability to fire Plasma Torpedoes without needing a target lock. The elusive Romulan Bird-of-Prey will easily be able to get the drop on your opponent thanks to the amazing ability of the Romulan Commander.
I.R.W. Gal Gath'Thong (Romulan Bird of Prey)
Front Firing Arc: 90° Rear Firing Arc: NA
A: 2
E: 2
H: 3
S: 2
When initiating an attack while Cloaked, you may fire Plasma Torpedoes without needing a Target Lock.
Actions: Evade, Target Lock, Cloak, Sensor Echo
Upgrades: Weapon, Weapon, Crew, Crew
Points: 18
Romulan Commander (Romulan/I.R.W. Gal Gath'Thong)
Captain Skill: 7
ACTION: During the combat phase this round, your ship attacks before every other ship. Place an auxiliary power token beside your ship.
Cost: 5
Elite Talent Upgrades: 2
Plasma Torpedoes (Romulan/I.R.W. Gal Gath'Thong)
A: 4
Range: 1-2
Attack: (Target Lock) Spend your target lock and disable this card to perform this attack. You may re-roll all your blank results one time. You may fire this weapon from your forward or rear firing arcs.
Cost: 3
The Romulan Officer and Centurion will see play together to help assist performing in large damage attacks against the opponent. The devious Romulans are always full of tricks like the use of Nuclear Warheads to cause serious damage to an unsuspecting opponent.
Romulan Officer (Romulan/I.R.W. Gal Gath'Thong)
ACTION: Discard this card. If you initiate an attack while cloaked this round, add +2 attack dice. You cannot roll any defense dice this round.
Cost: 5
Centurion (Romulan/I.R.W. Gal Gath'Thong)
When one of your <CREW> upgrades or Captain is to be disabled or discarded, you may discard this card instead.
Cost: 4
Nuclear Warhead (Romulan/I.R.W. Gal Gath'Thong)
ACTION: At the end of the activation phase discard this card and place a minefield token within range 1 of your ship, but not within your forward firing arc and not on top of another ship. If a ship enters the minefield on a future turn, roll 3 attack dice. Any [hit] or [critical] damages the ship as normal. The affected ship does not roll any defense dice.
Cost: 3
Elite Talents are also included in the form of Double Back and Decoy. One allows for greater maneuverability while the other stymies the opponent’s attacks when you just cannot get out of their firing arcs.
Double Back (Romulan/I.R.W. Gal Gath'Thong)
After performing a [sensor echo] action, you may discard this card to immediately perform a [Reverse]1 or [Reverse]2 full astern maneuver.
Cost: 5
Decoy (Romulan/I.R.W. Gal Gath'Thong)
When defending, before any dice are rolled, you may discard this card and any one of your [Weapon] or [Tech] upgrades to force your opponent to roll 3 less attack dice this round.
Cost: 4
All of the upgrades will come to great use as you terrorize the opponent while playing the Destroy The Outposts mission or while playing a standard head-to-head game. Regardless of how you end up fielding it, the I.R.W. Gal Gath’thong Expansion Pack will find its place among the best ships in the Romulan Star Empire. Be sure to seek out all four of the new Wave 3 expansion packs at your friendly local game store when they release next month.

What a deadly ship. I think in the long-run this might be the best ship in this Wave.
Plasma Torps with no Target Lock!!!!!!
Since the product shot hasn't made it up yet, do we know for sure if it comes with the two mine tokens (that we saw in the Dice Tower review)?
And I think the other factions want to see more named Romulans out and about.....these generic named Romulans (clearly high ranking Tal Shiar operatives, all of them!) are far too awesome!
It is almost upon us! Are you prepared for the Quarmageddon?
Another generic captain, but this guy seems like a highly sought after nameless person. More mines as well, though I wonder if we'll see a new mine token, or just have to continue with the print and play. Overall it looks like it'll be a very sought after inclusion to the Romulan Empire. My only complaint is that the weapon seemed more fearsome in the episode.

He actually was never named in any of the credits. I believe he is commonly refered to as Keras though this is not cannon to my knowledge; just Sarek spelled backwards as the same actor played both roles.

It contains two mine tokens, actually.

Yeah. And the odd thing is that these Plasmas are actualy lower powered than the Plasmas we already have. Granted it plays well within the game structure as the TOS Fed Torpedoes are not as powerful as the TNG ones as well.
My sources tell me it does come with two Minefield Tokens.
Excellent!
Speaking of your 'sources' next time you have a chance could your double check the upgrade slots on the Nova Class, Romulan Bird of Prey Class and the Raptor Class.....with the stock pics not up yet at BGG, I'm really interested to know what they got.
Please.

Love love love this ship and the upgrades, from my favorite Original Series episode. Sorry, guys, but I'm buying all of them. Though I wish it were coming out a week earlier so I could use them for my OP 5, which is on the 2nd.

Yeah, it looks like he never had a name, but they could always have given us someone who did, and used him as the generic. The Praetus has Valdore as a Captain, but he was an Admiral overseeing an unmanned ship in a different season. To be honest, I'm still hoping we get that ship. We could have also gotten Decius as a captain or more likely a crew upgrade, since he was a named Romulan in that episode. Otherwise, I understand why he doesn't have a name, it's just a minor nitpick.

The really nice thing is that the wording seems to support using the starter set Plasma Torpedoes with this ship. Overall, I think this expansion has the most going for it out of the wave. We have a formidable Romulan captain with two elite talent slots, a cheap ship that can fire Plasma Torps without locks, another guy who can give a bonus to firing while cloaked, some good movement options for cloaked ships, and MORE MINES. All with a new and sorely needed sculpt. I'm looking forward to it.

I agree. This ship rounds out the Romulan faction quite well. I also believe the Dominion Battleship does the same for its faction. Those two are definately the stars of this wave.

Definitely agree, and maybe that's the point. We know that those two factions are only getting one additional ship each until at least November. Personally, I think that's why the Federation expansions have been more modest. They have more future ships to improve with.

Sad that I'll want two just for the Warhead upgrades!!!
Ship does look cool. I wanted the model for Tactics, but we never got it. Warheads seem cool, though it sucks that you can't put them up until the end of the activation phase. For the points, I think I'd still prefer Cloaked mines (no action/attack cost, wider range) though there's definitely benefits to these. Either way, minefield strategies just got a lot more viable.
