Well I got my LE for Month 5 and was looking it over and contemplating some Breen-only builds.
When I've run the G-P before, I've never really loaded it up fully with 4 Weapon upgrades so those extra slots have always kind of been a "waste" to me. The R-L comes out with a Tech slot but the Tech upgrade with it? More Weapon upgrades!!
So i started looking at the other Dominion Tech upgrades and remembered how much I really love Tetryon Emissions. Great! I'll toss it on the R-L. No Tech slot on the G-P means he'll have to do without. Now since I have two G-P, I was going to run the generic as well. It, however, does not have a Tech slot either.
Then it hit me!! The generic ship tokens do not have the upgrades listed on them. There is no difference between the generic ship tokens of G-P & R-L AT ALL!! So even though I only have one R-L, I can still use its ship card with the generic token from the G-P and run the R-L and its generic version side-by-side while only needing the one LE ship pkg.
Considering the ONLY non-unique cards that are specific to the R-L are the Breen Guards and Cold Storage (which I will likely never use either in mutliple), I can look happily on my double G-P purchase now knowing I'll get more use out oft he second one with only having the one R-L!

Huh...is this legal? I guess the HC part of my brain is telling me that I need to have a ship card for each ship that I bring so you can't have a single card if you have more than one ship in your fleet. Or are you just talking about home games?

He has a ship card, and the ship when flipped to the generic, has the IDENTICAL stats of the Gor Portas, it's just like the Romulan Starter ship and the LE.
Since the ship cards are the same for both generics I would not see an issue with that.
I don't think there is anything an opponent can look at underneath your ship base from the rules standpoint.

Ahh...ok I see what you're saying. It was the part in bold that threw me off. I was under the impression that the OP was saying he was going to run both Generic GP's and the RL generic and use only the RL generic card.

Sorry for that confusion. reklawyad is correct in that I'm planning on using the G-P generic ship token for use with the R-L generic card. I'll still be running the G-P and R-L named versions.
This all stems from the initial pangs of "buyer's remourse" I was feeling after buying two G-P before we knew about the R-L coming out. Now I can be happy in the fact that the second G-P pack actually has more value due to it's ability to be run as the generic for either named ship (and also keeps me from actively pursueing a second R-L).
You'd still need 3 R-L cards if you were attempting to run 3 generics as you'll need the cards to show which ship has which Captain & Upgrades and whatnot.
There is only one difference between the GP generic card and the RL generic card. The GP has 3 Weapons while the RL has 2 Weapons and 1 Tech.
He'll still use the GP cards to mark shields and such, but instead of 3 Weapon slots its 2 Weps and a Tech.
EDIT: apparently I'm wrong, but that was what I thought the idea was.
I personally wouldn't have a problem with it, but I wouldn't be able to do that during my Dominion War events due to other players being hyper power gamers and everyone has to play to their rules, not for the fun of the game.

Hyper power gamers shouldn't have a leg to stand on for this one.
The LE genarics of both the genaric D'Deridex and the Breen Battle Class have different ship cards (which you would use) and the tile it named the same thing.
Now if there was a difference in name (like Mark 2.0 or something) or stat I could see it but there isn't.
It is almost upon us! Are you prepared for the Quarmageddon?

Yeah, you don't really know these people. You'd think that it'd be ok, but because you don't have enough of the actual card, they won't allow you to play the figure and complain to the judge.
Trust me, this has been a significant issue (among other things).

Oh, I probably do.
We've had a few people over the years who start out like that and we (judges and players as a group ) curb that stuff before it snowballs. They get their nose out of joint and then complain for a few weeks then it stops.
I have been to some venues where it is rampant though, and that is rough......my condolences.
Hopefully it's still a fun environment for you.

It really isn't. There are a few really cool and fun people that I have no problem playing with, but the good people are outnumbered 3 to 1.
This situation has also caused our TO to retire after the Dominion War is finished.
So...
At least there are a few people I can play outside the tournament series in fun games that I don't have to stress over knowing every single rule and interaction in that moment just to defend myself from rules jockeying and hardcore competitive play.

But that's the thing though, He does have 1 generic card from the RL to use for the sculpt plus the RL and GP cards for the other two sculpts. Where is it that rules are being broken?
Also, being an avid Dominion player, the RL has now gone from "must-have" to "I will let you name my first born if you give me the ship". Ok, not really. ...well, I guess it would depend on whether I like the name. But you get the idea. I must haves it. It is ...precioussss to me.

Ouch.
