It's because that is how they looked in the comics. They were future clones made by Darkseid to destroy The Legion of Super Heroes. It was known as the Great Darkness Saga. At one point Darkseid converted the entire planet of Daxam to recreate it as a new Apokolips. It was a pretty cool story if you ever get a chance to pick it up.
