I have a Quesiton on Takion's FASTER THAN THOUGHT Special power.
FASTER THAN THOUGHT: Takion can use Hypersonic Speed and Pulse Wave. When he uses Hypersonic Speed he can use Pulse Wave instead of a ranged combat attack.
HYPERSONIC SPEED Give this character a power action and move it up to its speed value. It adds 2 to its d6 roll when breaking away and can use . During its move, this character may, as a free action, make one close combat or ranged combat attack with its range value halved for the attack. This character must be in a square where it could legally end its move in order to make the attack.
I've seen a couple threads that all state that when he uses the pulse wave with the hypersonic speed his ranged is cut in half and half again. My question is why would it be cut in half twice? My reading of it would be that he may use the pulse wave instead of the ranged combat attack so it would replace the range combat attack part of hypersonic.
So it would be something like this
...During its move, this character may, as a free action, make one close combat or use pulse wave.
And since he uses pulse wave, he then halves his range once.
Thanks for you help I get a little confused on how the wording works sometimes. Does 'instead' not replace the whole part of the ranged combat attack.

Pulse Wave itself creates an AoE based on half the range value, so it halves twice.
Like charging out of hindering terrain.

Thanks, I guess I was reading as the 'ranged combat attack with its range value halved for the attack' as the halving being conditional on being a range combat attack and that the instead would remove that line. If the instead is simply removing the range combat attack and placing in pulse wave so it reads something like '...pulse wave with its range value halved for the attack' it makes sense.

Just curious I understand everything you said but the HSS character when he makes a ranged combat attack it gets halved, so when he decides to use PW instead of the attack shouldn't the range be at full range and only halved if the character were making a ranged attack as the power states.

You automatically need to halve your range when using PW (part of the power, read the PAC). So when you use it in combination with HSS you end up halving your range twice.

No. Think about a non-flier Charging out of Hindering Terrain. His Movement is 8, halved for Charge is 4, Halved for Hindering is 2.
Using HSS your Range Value is HALVED when you make an Ranged Combat Attack. So far so good, when you use Pulse Wave you are NOW making a Ranged Combat Attack (that why the dice roll) the POWER says the Area of Effect is Half your Range Value. What's your Range Value? Half of it's original value because you are making a Ranged Attack so 7/2 = 4(round up) then your AOE is HALF your new Range value, so 2.
Dig?
aqhoffman- greatest post possibly ever
jtallday- Jon I wouldn't challenge you if I wasn't sure you are wrong cuz I don't have that kind of energy.
Incidentally, this is actually a situation where shorter range is a good thing. Takion's normal range of 7 effectively drops to 2 (halved twice) for the PW attack which makes it much easier to target a single character for full damage. And since this is off of a HSS attack you've got a whole 10 movement to zip in then out with.
I get what you guys are saying, but HSS itself does not halve your range it is only halved for a ranged attack, so Takion gets to make a close combat attack, ranged attack with range halved, or PW. So when he uses PW instead of the range attack isn't he replacing the range attack therefore no range attack halved only an AOE created. So if it said give him a range combat action instead of a range combat attack, then you chose PW would it still be halved twice.

He is replacing the ranged attack, not the ranged attack at half range. So he changes it to a pulse wave at half range. You only replace what you are told to and nothing extra.
