I have no idea about how this game works but it looks like a lot of fun. Clix is the first and only tabletop game that I have ever played so my knowledge about tabletop gaming is very limited.
I have a few questions so bear with me as they are kind of all over the place.
My local shop gave me a great price on these pieces.

I know that I am still missing quite a bit of stuff. Is there a check list?
How much of what I'm missing is from approved play? I'm hoping most of what I'm missing I can pick up for retail'ish prices as long as its not LE stuff.
Once they make a ship is that it or do they do additional runs later?
Is it just like clix where some figures (ships) are complete duds or is everything more balanced? Are there any ships that are considered "cheesey" to play or frowned upon if you do so?
How complicated are the rules? One of my frustrations with clix is I don't get very many casual games in because most of my friends don't want to take the time to learn the game. Since no one else I know plays Attack Wing, I will have to find people to "teach" the game too. Is there such a learning curve that people will be "stomped" in introduction games?
I would assume the bigger prize approved play events (like for the Deep Space 9 piece) would be a bit more competitive. Do you need to have all the elements to compete in the bigger tournaments and because of the limited number of ships do you see a lot of mirror matches?
How often do they release new ships?
Do any of the ships really hold their value or is it all pretty even?
I know that the Star Wars and Star Trek aren't compatible but how close are the rules? Meaning if I picked up both, is it easy to go back and forth and play each one?
At Gencon will there be big tournaments for this and if so do they ever do any type of con pieces?
I'm sure that I'll have more questions pop up as I go.
Thank you in advance for helping me out. It looks like a lot of fun and I'm eager to get into it.

B) it's easier to learn and plays well scaled down.
C). You don't need everything. I and my son only buy Federation, Klingon, Romulan, and Borg.
D). Unbalanced - the game is pretty new so there isn't a lot of time to mess up. The Borg Sphere is really tough, though - a "problem" I see with design is the opposite of HeroClix:
In HC, powers are expensive and stats are cheap, in AW the stats are the only cost. Special abilities on the named ship are free. Also, no ship should have had more than a 4 attack. 5's and 6's can be overwhelming.
There are abilities that are great and there are some that are pretty weak.
E). Scenario play is AMAZING. I love the set-up scenarios that come with each ship. Many scenarios allow for those iffy cards to be more useful.
F). The game rocks with 3 or more players, too. Teach some pals and the you build a 70 point team and your two friends each build a 35 point ship. Awesome fun!
That's just a few things to start with.
"Klingon Bird of Prey" here on Realms has some good videos on YouTube with scenarios being played out.
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.

Hey Jeterey, I'll see if I can help out.

Well you have 13/27 ships that have been released for retail and are missing the 6 LE Ships, 1 DS9 (which has the same functionality as the DS9 token, but less cool looking), Promo Khan, and the 6 participation prizes from the Dominion War*, if you're going the completest route.
*Elite Attack Die, Command Tokens, Reinforcements Sideboard, Flagship Cards, Hideki Class Attack Squadron, and Federation Attack Squadron
And the Tholian Web OP starts up this month, but that list takes you up to that and includes Wave 4 releases (Voyager/Sphere/Bioship/Kazon).

You know, I'm not sure I've ever seen an official comment on this one....but I've seen ships show up several times (I think I've seen Wave 0 released about 4-5 times now locally), so I think so......but I can't be sure.

Just like clix, there are lots of different views on that, some people just spam Picard (from the starter, using him on every fleet they play), some people spam the Cloaked Mines (from the Preatus, using multiples at a time), and the LE Conditional Surrender (from the LE Krayton, and usually Shroud for many uses) is getting talk of some ripe abuse................but for the most part I find the majority of this usable in the right situation.
For the most parts the Ships aren't what's talked about as frowned upon or cheesy...........having said that, the latest Wave have 3 very powerful ships (Voyager, Borg Sphere, and Bioship Alpha) that we, as players, are still adjusting to. In particular the Borg, as they have a unique movement style which we are still on the learning curve of for the most part.
As a result, after asking my local players about it we've decided to keep Wave 4 out of the Tholian Web event this month (just because of the nature of the scenario).

Very easy. The majority of the game is 4 steps.
Plan your move.
Reveal and move.
Take an action, if possible
Attack. Rinse, Repeat.
The complexity and rules questions tend to come from the action interactions and ship abilities.
Additionally, if you're going to be teaching people the game I suggest you look into the Scenario that came with the Valdore (Destroy the Scimitar).......it's a co-operative scenario that can be played with up to 3 players, it's what I use and it works very well.

Depends on your Local, but I would think so for the most part
Quote
Do you need to have all the elements to compete in the bigger tournaments and because of the limited number of ships do you see a lot of mirror matches?
No. Absolutely not. You will probably find that some ships/expansions are more useful overall (either for the ship or the captains/upgrades that come with it) and mixing and matching does provide good combinations but no, not everything is required. Many people suggest that the participation prizes from the OP events are keys to their builds though....but it should be easy and reasonable to pick them up (the Flagships and Command Tokens I believe are the two favorites IIRC).
Also because of the # of ships we currently have (33 I think not including the LE from the Tholian Web) Mirror matches, from reports, are becoming less common. Obviously when we only had 11 ships (Starter + Wave 0) we saw a lot.
Quote
How often do they release new ships?
It was 4 ships every 2 months and starting in June we will be going into 3 ships a month (for at least the June-Oct that we know of, we haven't heard after that).
Quote
Do any of the ships really hold their value or is it all pretty even?
For the most part, yes. Case in point, the USS Enterprise (NBABCoD) is a very decent ship with some or the best crew/upgrades in the game.........Thugit has adopted it as his own Mr Bane, no less........but with the release of Voyager, Captain Janeway has breathed even more life into it.....to the point where the Enterprise/Janeway combo might be one of the top Federation ships for now. The Valdore (Wave 0) is considered to be the best romulan ship in the game and one of the strongest ships period (pre wave 4, of course).

I know that the Star Wars and Star Trek aren't compatible but how close are the rules? Meaning if I picked up both, is it easy to go back and forth and play each one?
The basic game-play mechanics are very similar. Basic turn flow is the same but some things like being in base contact with an opposing ship for combat is treated differently (in SW you can't attack, in ST you can).
As they are so similar, and FFG did such a good instructional video I typically point people to this....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuhwSma960Y and then tell them they can look at the rule book....if I can't run a demo for them.
Some people probably wouldn't go that route but it's how I learned (I started with X-Wing, and still play when I can).

Not sure about this year, but last year they had Promo Khan they gave out.

It is almost upon us! Are you prepared for the Quarmageddon?
Thank you to both of you for the response. What about storage for this game? Are you just using the same type of clix storage? It seems like there is way more to keep track of with this one.
I really appreciate it.

I don't know for Star Trek but for Star Wars (from FFG not wizkids) the ships are quite balanced (not perfectly but ALOT more than heroclix) and they have additionnal print runs so NOTHING is out of production right now. You sometime have to wait for the reprint, but everything is available.

Here is my experience with X-Wing and i know Attack Wing has the same rules (or with a few twists) : people can learn the rules in 20 minutes, and learn to move the pieces and have fun... Now moving the pieces and winning games is different. Usually it's better to play against people with the same level, learning with them at the same time. Someone who plays for months then try to play against a beginner will have a huge advantage. But it's easy to learn, it's fast and it's very balanced, and clearly i have ALOT of new players i teach the game and that enjoy it and want to play it with me, where heroclix is something they will refure to learn or touch because it's "too much work". So i think it's the right choice. There is a learning curve but it's a good one. Not like clix where it's an awfull overwhelming one.

The rules are very close. It's easy to go back and forth. Star wars is handled in a more casual-friendly versus competitive-friendly (like star trek, clix) because the company FFG does things differently. I prefer FFG, clearly, but you'll have to try both and see what is best for you.

I use the same storage system as HC. You have lots of little pieces to put down and remove so those divided cases are important so you can find what you need.
I sent a picture of the Soul Nebula to an online banner store (no grommets). Cost me $10 (a sale was on) for a vinyl play area and it's great! Plastic tables suck because the pieces slide so much.
I only collected Star Wars through the TIE Interceptor but then the game was designed for more head to head play. Star Trek's scenarios that come with each set is phenomenal for casual play - but like HeroClix, all 3 games you will get what you put into it / what you focus on.
I do think Star Wars captures the dogfight very well and I feel Star Trek's battle between capital ships is captured wonderfully as well.

There is a much better option in my sig.
As for storage, I finally broke down and purchased a Plano 732. The lower three trays can easily hold a ton of figures. I have everything made plus duplicates of a lot of the ships and most of them can fit in the three trays. I use the two side trays for tokens (one fir me, the other for my son). There is still enough room in the upper compartments for all if the extra bits from the starter, expansion missions and OP map elements as well.
Stop by the AW area at Origins. You can see the game in action. It should be interesting as this will be the first time it's being run as a constructed event at a major con so we may see how different local metas collide.
Thanks for the responses. I just went and bought another Plano 1150. Its what I use for my clix. It holds quite a bit and has room for Deck Boxes on the one side. Looking forward to getting into some games. It looks like a lot of fun. I might pick up the Star Wars stuff after Origins.

On storage, I will say this: You will end up with a TON of duplicate tokens of all types, especially shields and target locks. I recommend that after the first few ships you open you just leave the rest un-punched and stick them somewhere. They pile up fast, and you don't need to lug all those things around.
Before I bought the game I watched some fantastic X-Wing championship videos on YouTube, and the games are similar enough that you can get a pretty good feel for how the game works.
You're starting with a pretty great set of ships. I might recommend picking up Defiant, Koraga (classic Klingon Bird of Prey), and Koranak (the best Cardassian/Dominion ship).
Out of the resources, it wouldn't hurt to pick up a set of Flagship cards and the fighters. The command tokens are pretty great. You can find those fairly cheaply. Reinforcement sideboard is probably really good for someone less lazy than me.
Of the LE ships, I think it depends on what faction you end up liking. I feel like getting the Aj'Rmr is pretty vital for Romulans (Romulan Pilot), and the Ch'tang is a potent Klingon expansion (Barrage of Fire).
You got a pretty solid chunk of stuff right off the bat. I feel like you have a pretty solid foundation for all three of Federation, Romulan, Klingon. I'll try not to rehash too much of what others have already said, but both the Enterprise and Enterprise-D are solid. I haven't run Equinox, but i like Emergency Medical Hologram from it, and it seems a decent extra ship. I love the Reliant as filler/support, and I love Clark Terrell as a support captain. Valdor and Negh'Var are solid staples too.
Totally agree about the Resources to pick up. Flagship and Elite Die are my favorites, but the fighters rock too. The USS Sutherland OP ship gives some great Federation upgrades.
Good times, I hope you enjoy it. I use the Plano 3952 (have one each for X- and AttackWing, about to order another to disperse my AttackWing a bit more) and love it.
I use a Plano 1374. It holds everything. I keep all of my cards in sleeves inside of a 300 count card box, which also fits in the top of the Plano. I use one of the smaller plastic plano that is found in the bottom of the 1374 to have all of my "tourney elements" in it. I build my team, and carry that with me to the tourney.
I have pretty much every AW element/ship save for a couple. Everything fits in the 1374, on top of still having an empty plastic plano in the bottom, and the tourney plano I carry to the games.
As far as the rest goes - I can't add much to what everyone has already said. As someone who comes from competitive Heroclix I can say that AW has filled that void and then some. But without all of the nonsense that clix has become over the past couple of years. I will always love clix, but it's just nonsense to me at this point. AW has offered a new game that still has the teambuilding and indepth strategy that clix offers.
My local shop sold me the starter and 10 "expansions" for $100 w/ tax. Not bad. The problem is if I want anything else, they'd have to order it as they aren't carrying it anymore. Thats why I'm not exactly sure what is available for purchase.
I saw in an instructional video a guy that had to roll a lot of dice at one point. Is there a way to get more dice without buying a starter?
When you say get resources, is that like buying a Utility Belt or something? What are they exactly?
Is there usually a default build that most tournament games would be? Like 300 in clix? Do people run multiples of the same ships/captains?
Is there any type of "units section" to help team build out there?
I dont think that I will be a completionist for this game. I will probably pick up all of the Federation and Borg stuff though. At some point I will probably buy all of the Attack Wing stuff. Dogfighting sounds intriguing but both seem to have their appeal.
Thanks again. This thread has been more than helpful.

They are releasing a dice pack this summer. June or July I think.

Yeah, they hand the resources out as participation at events. So far they've been pretty well balanced. You can add one to your fleet at some cost. The Elite Attack Die is a die with extra hits on it, for example. The Flagship resource is a special base and a card that confers stat bonuses and special abilities to the selected ship. Things like that. You have to go secondary market for them. You might check the market section here first, you can get them cheap or trade for them with fellow Realmsers.

So far all the OP has been 100 points. Named ships, named captains, and pretty much all the crew upgrades are uniques, so you can't run doubles of them. You could run the generic version of a ship alongside a named, though (like run the Enterprise D and a plain Galaxy class alongside).
