Cosmic Oasis Super Qualifier II
June 28th, 2014
By Jerry "Damage" Cook
In KY, we love to ROC. The kickoff to the summer of ROC was with the second super qualifier for Cosmic Oasis in Richmond KY. This was a part of the Meeplefest gaming convention which also featured a large Magic PTQ and a very large Yu-Gi-Oh tournament as well.
Coming off of Origins, the meta game is about as varied as it's ever been. At our first super qualifier we had our Questions answered. This time we had them possessed. After 4 rounds of Swiss and a top 16 chalked full of talent and great teams, one person was left standing.
Keenon's team was scary and it truly owned the ROC Arena map all day long. The finals match was a great matchup between two skilled players piloting two great teams.

I can honestly say that I did not expect to see Shrinking Violet in the finals. But Marshall made me a believer as he showed everyone just how good she could be on the right team.

Iron Pharaoh 110
- Adara 25
Speed Demon 110
Weasel 27
Power Battery (Green ring, Crossbow, Shield) 28
Jason and David are both great players. Jason's Iron Pharaoh was a beast when paired with Weasel and Speed Demon. David was the champion of the first super qualifier and once again showed us just how meta Question is.
Just to make the top 4 was no easy task. They each had to overcome difficult matchups and some very talented players.

Congrats to "The Bob"-nasty build! I'm going to have to make the drive to one of these Kentucky Rocs before too much longer. Somebody have Spawn10 chained up in a basement somewhere during this one? JK, looks like a great event, wish I could have been there. Thanks for the detailed write-up.

Canīt wait to see this thread get taken over by the people who wil say entitys are absolutely broken and need to get watchlists bc TheBob won with multiple of them. Of course completely ignoring the fact he played a well known meta team from the start, 2nd place only had an entity on a 13 point piece and there were only 7 out of 16 not playing an entity at all. Iīm quite sure Bob won because he is a great player and not just because of his entitys. Congrats to him and to second place for building a great team as well!

Yeah. It's only a matter of time before the Knee-Jerks arrive. Hey, remember back in the old days () when they were all screaming that Lydea would break the game? She's gotta be Watch Listed?

Bob did indeed do a great job playing his team. On top of being the only person to beat me all day, he really did do it all on skill. The team was good, but I'm sure he'll be glad to agree that both his team and my own were both perfectly capable of.... What's a good term... Eliminating the other with extreme prejudice. There was no "sit down at the table and immediatly go well you got map roll good game." Ahh how quickly team base matches were over... We played right up until like 1 minute before time would have been called. I made a couple of positioning errors and they were thoroughly taken advantage of . Best game I've played in a while, can't wait to beat..cough..umm...I mean see The Bob for a rematch in GA later this month. Entities are fun. Anyone who plays it competitivly knows in heroclix you don't bring a knife to a gun fight...you bring a bazooka and expect to be fighting rocket launchers all day. Just got to get my ray gun from the future serviced and it's on.
and there were only 7 out of 16 not playing an entity at all.
It looks to me like you are making a pretty good case for those so-called complainers with just that statement alone. So many people playing entities, I wonder why that is? There is one point that I would like to make concerning the entities, before they came along we were seeing a great deal of diversity in team builds. It looks like those days might be over for a while. Just take a moment and look at the sheer number of Iron Pharaohs that were played. Shatterstar and Despotellis show up a ridiculous number of times as well. 7 out of 8 in the top 8 played entities, some teams having as many as three. We see a little more diversity at the bottom of the top 16, but obviously those teams did not do well against the more cookie cutter style teams we see at the top. I am certainly not bashing any of the players or trying to take away their achievement, I just think the entities might put us back on the road I thought we had steered away from.

The really funny thing is that it does not seem like that long ago that we were all worried about zombies. I have not seen them in a top 8 yet.
Gah!!!! Your right! How could I have forgotten them so soon? And apparently...so has everybody else.
Maybe we will see more zombie play when the entities get the nerf bat. My guess is that it will happen sometime after War of Light is over. I will not go so far as to say that I believe they are broken, just that they are very abusable. Especially when you consider they can be used in tandem with a resource. If Spawn10 is chained up in a basement somewhere, mark my word, he is probably finding a way to super break them as we speak. If anyone can get them watch list attention, I am sure it will be him.

And that's how I think they will be nerfed. They will not be allowed on the same build as a resource. Or something like that. And if that happens, I think resources will fade for a while...a long while in the meta play.
And as far as that rapscallion Spawn10 is concerned... he is soooo wired differently than the rest of us mere mortals. And that's why we all love him!
