I played my second game of Attack Wing, and I'm getting into Trek in general
Almost 2 weeks ago I got a chance to play another game of Attack Wing. The guy I played with insisted on playing faction pure, which I was fine with. We threw DS9 on the 4'x4' board for some obstacles.
I insisted on playing Romulans, however he only had 2 Romulan ships and it didn't go very well for me against his Klingons. It was still fun, and I could see myself getting more into it. Still not something I would buy into though. I still feel like X-Wing is a much simpler game, but I'm likely biased since I'm more versed with that game.
However, I've been enjoying getting into Trek through Netflix. I never watched Trek growing up. Over the last couple weeks I've watched over half of the 80 episodes of TOS and plan to jump straight into the movies and then TNG and so on.
I've enjoyed it a lot. Its surprising how, despite obvious things that date the show, it doesn't feel dated. I'm looking forward to the other shows.

DS9 is very good I still haven't finished all the episodes on S7 of it but Dukat, Damar and Weyoun as mentioned are very well developed. There are some nice throwback episodes "Troubles with Tribbles" and the one episode where they are all Newspaper Reporters was quite fun episodes that really did nothing for the overall story but were cool to have.
With the regards to Attack Wing and "Faction Pure" I try to stay as close as possible, sadly there is no "Loquitus of Borg" yet so Jean Luc is my go to guy, but once we do get one, he's off. Really if you just like playing one faction the game is very affordable. Especially if you are planning on playing games "faction pure".
Hope that helps, are the 2 Romulan ships he does have, either of them Valdore class?

It was 2 of the same exact ship, and they only had 3 attack dice each. I don't remember what class they were. I faced 3 Klingon ships with 4 or 5 attack dice each. At one point he did a Klingon Barrage of Fire or something like that. I think its an LE upgrade that allows you to combine fire of 2 ships for one attack. He was rolling 10 dice on that attack and got 8 hits (not sure how many I was able to cancel after I rolled my agility dice). It was pretty rough for me after that.
I'm sure buying 1 faction would be cost effective, but with my limited budget and the very limited amount of times I will play, I don't see myself doing it.

Glad you are enjoying the show (TNG was great, but DS9 is by and far the best Trek ever put to film!) and our game. I only play and collect Klingon, Federation and Borg (in that order), so my Romulans are limited to what came in the starter. A store in the area has their Attack Wing stuff on sale for 45% off, so I have considered picking up some Romulans, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
My personal preference is to play faction pure with only Independents being able to crew for multiple factions, but that's my own thing. I know that when I go to play at GenCon, I will either be hindered severely or will have to adapt my own style to fit the meta there. I'm cool with that.

And anytime you want to play, just hit me up!
You gave him 2 Double D's and came at him with a 3 ship Klingon fleet with Barage of Fire?
You are a horrible, horrible person. At least go buy a Valdore so rowdy has a fighting chance.
As to the shows, I finally got thru Voyager and am now on season 2 of Enterprise. Now that I've seen a few more episodes, I hate the fact that I now know enough about the Vulcans to pique my interest in their ships.
That is a bold statement, sir. I liked the last couple seasons, but barely remember the first two at all.
Voyager is notable for being the only Trek series I actually gave up on, though I've heard it started getting better shortly after I left. Sometimes I think about going back and watching it, but I'd rather spend my precious time re-watching DS9 or TOS.
Wow, well I guess I'm in the minority, in that I generally quite enjoyed Voyager, although it was not as good, overall, as either TNG or DS9. I put those two on equal footing; when DS9 was good, it was really good, but when it was bad, it was pretty bad (absolutely could not stand the Dukat storyline in the final season, one massive wtf ), whereas TNG was pretty reliably watchable all the way through, for me.
I couldn't make it more than halfway through the first episode of Enterprise. Like all of them, I guess it gets better as you go on, but most of the characters ranged from bland to downright intolerable, for me. I felt like there was far too much emotion behind T'Pol's smugness, bordering on vindictive and disapproving, compared with previous, more aloof depictions of the Vulcans. I hear Jeffrey Combs comes in as an Andorian later, and that is something that I do want to see, but I'm not sure I can trudge through enough of the show to get there.
I enjoy TOS as sort of hokey nostalgia. Even if the production feels very dated now, a lot of the ideas are still interesting, and the characters are quite fun!
Glad you're enjoying the game, though! Doesn't sound like you played with terribly balanced fleets, but maybe next time your opponent will build a slightly toned down Klingon (or Federation or Dominion) fleet to fly against the Romulans. Romulans can be quite good in a faction-pure environment, but sometimes I do feel like they need a little more work than other races.

I think each series was good for what it was.
TOS is just classic ST.
TNG was a reimagining of TOS. Same structure (episodic) with a few cool recurring items (Q, for instance).
DS9 was a departure into an overarcing storyline. While people seem to love DS9 for this reason, I feel it tried to walk the line too much and have episodic stuff tossed in that had little to no impact on the overall Dominion War storyline and it ended up being disjointed as a result.
Voyager did a better job IMHO of having a broad storyline (getting to the Alpha Quadrant) while keeping the episodic feel of the first two series. I honestly do NOT think this series was bad at all.
Now, I'm only into season 2 of Enterprise, but I've liked it thus far. Like Voyager, it has a broader storyline (first time explorers getting out into the universe) but is still pretty self-contained within each episode. When something big does happen (like the damage in Minefield), it's addressed in the next episode so there is still tight continuity.
The third season of Enterprise I loved as a great sci fi pulp epic, and the fourth is when it felt like it really started to take advantage of its lineage.

To be fair, he offered me Federation and I insisted on Romulans. He may have even offered me Klingon, likely forcing him to play Federation. I chose the 2 Romulan ships. So now I know.
