I finally signed up to play in my first ever event. It's the pre release, sealed event for the new set. Is there any general advice for playing in these events?
You want to quickly assess the key piece or pieces that you want to build around. Typically, the first thing I do is quickly determine if making a theme team is an option to help narrow the choices. I also look out for fliers/carriers as they can conserve action and provide mobility but that holds for constructed also.
There are commonly primers here at HCrealms that preview and review the dials with an attention to sealed format. As this is a prerelease, odds are there won't be a primer to rely on. If you can get a feel for the set, that can be something to plan around. Examples: if there is a lot of stealth, stealth busting can become more valuable, if there is a lot precision strike, super senses might be less valuable.
Other than that, I would say use the same skills you use with building constructed teams.

I would find out what type of sealed the Pre-release is going to be.
1. play with the figures in your one booster and construct a xxx point team build.
2. pick and pass, where you open your booster, assess your figures, choose one figure and pass the rest to your left(or right).
3. rochester draft, open your booster, assess your figures, choose one figure and place the rest of your figures in the center(everyone does this), the next step the player with the lowest point total drafts one figure from the center, the next lowest picks one figure until everyone has two figures, next, the lowest point accumulative total value gets to choose one figure and so forth until all players have five figures. This draft tends to balance out point totals.
When constructing your team, one man armies always get out actioned, but if you can take the hits and deliver one hit KOs give the build a small thought.
Swarm teams that can tie up others and hit though damage reducers or high defenses could be fun to play
Utility team- figures that have your support powers, outwit, PC, perplex
can usually finesse opponents
Stealth teams- I think this might be useless with all the Superman TA in this set.
Good luck and keep all of use in the loop with your progress and outcome.

I prefer playing multiple pieces, unless I pull a beast of a OMA.
What support powers did I pull?
How many quality attackers did I pull?
Do I have good mobility for the map?
If you pulled an expensive piece to try and run a OMA.
Does it have any glaring weaknesses i.e. Outwit, low values?
Will being out actioned be a huge disadvantage?
How well can it stand up to a swarm?
I think the most important thing will be understanding your pieces. You want to make sure you have a good handle on whatever you play. In a prerelease nobody has seen it yet and you only get a limited amount of time to build and prepare.

If building a swarm team, make sure you have enough actions to make team usable. I have seen teams get hosed because there were no flyers, leadership or source of adding actions to the pool. The JLA and Avengers TAs can help but they only give you extra move actions.
I think Outwit and Prob Control are even better in sealed and can really give you a big advantage over your opponent... especially if he/she doesn't have any.
As people have said, having fliers/non-fliers to use Carry, and having Indomitable/Willpower can help you out-action your opponent.
I like to have 1 really cheap tie-up piece if possible. It's nice when your opponent's best piece has to waste it's time on a 30 point figure.
Some pass-n-play events let you play and keep the figs you draft. Others pool all the figs at the end games and everyone drafts in order of their finish in the event. If it is the former, I would always select a valued piece over a key piece (read one I wanted or had high trade value), unless I really wanted the prize/victory.
Picking the biggest, nastiest high point character is usually a good option in these since shenanigans are minimal. Otherwise I prioritize folks with prob control, move and attack and good stats.
Hey guys, just wanted to report on my event this past Wednesday.
I learned that I'm OK at building a team, but need a lot more practice playing. But the guys I played with were really cool and showed me how to more effectively run my team and coached me to win my second game. There were only 3 people at the event, so the winner was already decided when we played. It was a 400 point sealed game, and since it was only 3 players, we all got two boosters. I pulled the lone super rare in sealed, Krypto, so that was really exciting for me.
The team I ran was Red Tornado, Maxima, Krypto, JSA Superman and Lana Lang at 20 points, team build total was 390. My other pulls were Accountable, Hat, Minagere, Paradeamon, and mermaid
