So, for a couple years now (on and off) I've been modding older pieces to resemble their New Mutant counterparts. For a reference point, I still have an unfinished NM costume Cannonball on the old GSX base before the Wolverine set was announced.
Anyhoo, I managed to snatch up a WK exclusive Cannonball for $1 online and it reinvigorated my interest in building a fun team around the lads. Here's what I came up with last night.
For curiosity sake, Cypher was modded into his New Mutants costume. You can check him out somewheres on my modding thread. Also of note, Professor X is actually just a dial/keyword/team ability stand in for Karma.. which they haven't made a new version of yet. As for selection notes, I prefer the WS Wolfsbane to any of the newer incarnations. They're fun and all, depending, but I find them too unreliable. She too is a mod, of which I have an X-Factor variant of as well, of a ASM Werewolf.
There's not much 'legit' strategy with the team to be honest. Pick a neat TA to copy with Cypher, keep a couple beatsticks around Karma to leech the shapechange benefit and PC or MC threats away/into harms way, snatch up the straighjacket with Cannonball and rush in to neutralize their biggest threat. I've thought about switching out a couple characters, make room for the AVX Magik.. but then I lose TTPC, which is always a bonus on a swarmy team.
Thoughts? Ideas? Criticisms? If anything, win lose or draw, I find it hitting me right in the feels to field a team with those oldschool yellow and black outfits.
I grok the appeal of using a more modern dial (with a matching keyword) for Karma, but I don't think the original Fantastic Forces Veteran is anything to dismiss out-of-hand.
You have more points left over for things like feats (if that's the way you roll), or you can opt to use higher point Magiks, or if you compromise on Wolfsbane, you can play the team in a 700-point game.
The only other point-compromise I would consider is to go all the way down to the Rookie Supernova Sunspot. He has a budget price with no frills, but I think that he's worth the points given the modern rules for Super Strength and the X-Men TA.
