Hello, and welcome to the 2015 HCRealms Maffie Awards! 2015 was a great year, with a multitude of great games and players, and we gather here to acknowledge those games and players, and everything we achieved as a community last year. I think now is the time during these things that the host would make some sort of joke. So, here it goes…
What did Batman say to Robin before they got in the Batmobile?
Get in the Batmobile.
*crickets chirp*
Sorry about that. With that, I turn things over to Magnito, here to present the award for Rookie of the Year!
Note: I am still looking for presenters to fill the few remaining slots. If interested, shoot me a PM.
It is my honor to get to kick things off here with the presentation of the first award.
Mafia has been running on HCRealms for the better part of a decade now, and it is easy to see how this can become somewhat of an old boys (and girls) club. Our little group runs parallel to the main site, many of us no longer playing Heroclix but still hang around because of the friends we have made.
It is because of this, that it is hard to entice new players into our little section. But once in a while a new face appears and sometimes they take to the game like a fish to water. Soon becoming an integral party of the community.
It is my honor to present the award of Rookie of the Year to colonialbob.
Colonialbob may be a new face, but you would never know it from his play style. I've seen him play as town, mafia and neutral, and he never played half way. He participates fully, plays for his team and it already seems as if he has been among us for years.
Congratulations colonialnbob, Rookie of the Year!
Wow, thank you guys! This is pretty cool, and I'm honored to be recognized. I've had a lot of fun so far playing mafia, and I'm really glad I decided to try it out. Everybody has been welcoming and helpful. This forum has become one of the main places I hang out online, and I've enjoyed every minute of it. Looking forward to many more games to come!
Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Once, long ago, Icarus escaped from Crete by fastening together wings out of feathers and wax. <laughter> Ah, okay. His genius and invention allowed him to escape, but upon taking to the sky, his wings fell apart as the wax melted. It is a cautionary tale of both genius and failure.
<applause>
You cannot have great, epic failure without great genius. The Award for The Most Epic Fail is not the identification of the greatest blunder, but the insight into great genius soured by immediate and incredible defeat.
What is so monumental about the phase is that CaptThulkman went into the phase trusted as a neutral by at least some individuals; Pax evens says that he is willing to hear from CaptThulkman to see who else is mafia and that he believed CaptThulkman to be neutral. CaptThulkman makes the mafia offer: side with us. It did not work. He was summarily lynched and the game ended that night phase.
CaptThulkman: this award is for you, and it is a badge of honor. You are one of us, you played an epic gamble filled with genius and cunning. Much like Icarus, you got too close to the sun and came tumbling down.
The winner of the next award certainly made a name for himself with a singular role, a role that was a joke in ways both funny-haha and funny-annoying. Personally, my favorite kind of humor, and this accomplished annoying better than I could've dreamed. But hey, you play the hand you're dealt, even when it makes you target both night and day in later games. Let me just say, RenegadeRoy may have the easiest jester role in a future game where all he'll have to do is try to sell the town an Oh Henry! bar to get himself lynched. And for that, lets yuk it up for our Comedian of the year!
Congrats RenegadeRoy, you got some laughter, some tears, and some bouts of rage. Those are the marks do a good comedian from where I stand.

Wow! I really shouldn't say anything more without thanking the nutty, sweet, smooth, and creamy centered reason I'm here accepting this reward of course I'm talking about....
....
... all my fellow Realmser mafiosos!
Hats off to Stranger for cooking up the wickedly fun role of Blatant Cash Grab. Fun fact: I had never had an Oh Henry! bar until I played this game, so it looks like Cash Grab was effective in a weird, uber-meta way. Anyway, I had been trying to get NFL Super Pro into one of Stranger's Hybridity games seemingly forever and when it finally landed I was amped. I remember opening the role PM and actually saying out loud "oh boy, this is gonna be a doozy!"... thankfully the men's room was empty at the time.
But seriously, folks. I might not be the best mafia player, but I still have a great time playing. Something that wouldn't be possible without this great community of players. Thanks again, everyone!
The game of Mafia here on the realms is pretty simple. There's an informed minority. There's an uninformed majority. And there's a ton of powers. I've played in over 400 games here, I think, and I know that we have other players that have been here longer... And why do we continue? Simple - to see what the next moderator thinks up next. What's that new little tweak someone will bring to the structure of a game that will make people think, "Wow, that was pretty original and fun."
Our three nominees for Best Role Design are unique themselves. A veteran player who can control any game he is in, respected by his peers, but who has only dabbled in the modding side; a fresh-faced (compared to some of us, anyway) lover of the game who dove into both sides with a fervent glee; and a master mod with easily over a dozen games under his belt, known for his in-depth dedication to a great game.
Three unique approaches to role design, but in this there can be only one...
...right?
*opens envelope*
*confused face*
Uhhhhh... Is this right?
*looks off stage and sees an impatient director scowling at him* He mouths "Read the damn card!"
So, ladies and gentleman it appears we have... A tie. And not just any tie.
A. Three. Way. Tie!!!
Congrats to kontrol (Y: The Last Man), Girathon (Monster Mash), & Immortal_Raven (World History I)
On a personal note, I'm am ecstatic at these results, as all three games provided me with 3 of my favorite roles. Kudos, gentlemen!
"Why would the possibility of me being wrong ever stop me from doing something?"
*glares at kontrol for issues involving his name and auto-correct.
Wow, I truly didn't expect to win anything. Well, that's not true. I thought I was heavily favored in the epic fail category. I'm my own worst critic at least terms of feedback I receive. Role design and game balance are always sticking points even for a seasoned mod. The gamut of emotions I run through when creating a game covers joy, zeal, disgust, indifference, doubt, shame, more shame, more joy coupled with shame, nervousness, and a whole host of others that are too many to name or remember for that matter.
So I'm glad you all enjoyed. This award truly means a lot as it's the respect of one's peers. It's not some backroom committee that centers around politics; it's all of us who play and mod here day in and day out. So I happily share this award with these two esteemed gentlemen (I still get my own statue right?!) and I thank you for your support.
Thank you everyone, good night...er, morning...er, yeah. I'll get off the stage now.
*runs in high fiving, does a little dance and dabs*
Hello! Good Morning! I'm not even sure what to say here. I wish I could say I was prepared for this, but
*rubs head nervously* I'm not. At all. Still, there are people I'd like to thank.
*picks up the trophy and stares a little absentmindedly at it for a couple beats before continuing*
Peers, you brought this insane game to the Realms many moons ago and without you I'm not standing here today. I'd like to thank Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra for the awesome series that was Y the Last Man. I'd like to thank the community here. So many people here have seen me grow from the first doctor in a mafia game (Shout out Cecilia Reyes) and go through so much in Mafia and in my personal life.
*looks into the crowd warmly*
The Mafia get-togethers at WW truly opened my eyes to how close-knit this group is. Family, You guys are family. I know it sounds sappy as hell, but it's true for me.
I'm so honored you guy thought so much of my game. I don't know how many days and nights I spent coming up with it all the scenarios and balancing and rebalancing and retweaking and never knowing if I quite got it right. Hell, I'm still not sure, I'm happy you all had fun with it.
*raises trophy*
Immortal, Gira. It's an honor being up here with you two.
If you let them kill your dreams, it'll haunt you.

First off, I'd like to say how astonished I am we actually got a tie. The three games had exactly the same amount of votes for 1st, 2ed, and 3rd place. It could not have been closer. Congrats to my fellow winners.
I would like to thank sstralkowski and K-Ness for looking over my roles and providing some helpful advice. I think the game would have been much poorer had it not been for their support.
I really strive to have a good variations of fun and unique roles, and it isn't always easy. We all make mistakes. But I'm glad to see people enjoy what I do. I am happy to share this award with my fellow mods! Thank you!
"Hey, get back out there, you've got to present an award now."
"I know. Can I at least change first?"
"No, we're running behind as it is."
"But I rented a badger suit, midget launcher, and Sledge-O-Matic. It even came with 5 watermelons."
"I don't care, get your ass out there."
"Can I at least grab my notes?"
*whipcrack and lots of expletives.
"Greetings. Welcome back to the Maffies. I've been instructed to inform you that the director is a colossal meanie with no sense of humor."
*whipcrack
"Owwwww. Ok, ok. I am here to present the award for best use of a theme. Theme can be considered the backdrop of a mafia game. It draws us to just about anything from TV shows to board games to décor to...wait for it...the mafia games themselves. Admit it, we all start drooling over the possibilities for a character when a game sign-up thread opens. I know I do. Without further ado, the nominees.
Mr Stanger for his work with the Hybridity series.
Magnito for his work with "Betrayal at House on the Hill".
"Owwwww. Sheesh what a grouch. The winner is Mr Stranger for his work in the Hybridity games. Come on down. Take a bow. Say some words. Make a toast. Accept the award as only you can."
Mr Stranger couldn't be here today, so instead I'm going to accept this award on his behalf.
My name is Weird Stain, the Sock Puppet.
Webster's Dictionary describes the word maffie as "The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the search bar above."
And I think that's beautiful. But what does that really mean to the people here?
Well I don't know, because I'm just a Sock Puppet that's never been used as a sock.
But if I had to guess, it would be togetherness and community. I think the people here are friends. They mod and play these games in order to inspire and encourage eachother. The only benefit a mod has is to see people enjoying themselves, and every theme, role, writeup and character is made to expand on this. I'm sure if Mr Stranger were here now he'd say that he appreciates the support and knows that Hybridity only exists for the players and their enjoyment.
He's not here though, so instead I'm going to scream until I pass out.
Oh, and I may have to pawn that trophy for my crippling meth addition.
