The X-Men are facing their most unusual foes yet. Enemies so powerful they’ve brainwashed former allies and sent enemies scrambling to them for help! In this edition of Comic Accurate, it’s the lineup of the X-Men from the Supernovas arc!
It’s 2007 and writer Mike Carey has taken over the writing duties of the adjective-less X-Men book. Carey’s arc began with the introduction of the Children of the Vault, a group of humans that gained powers through 6,000 years of hyper-evolution that wanted to destroy both Human and Mutant alike.
After encountering Sabretooth, they attacked him and sent him scrambling for help from the X-Men. In order to handle the X-Men, the Children of the Vault attack our merry mutants with the help of a brainwashed Aurora and Northstar!
Fortunately, Cable had rejoined the X-Men at this time and helped to stop the Children of the Vault and free the Canadian siblings. The X-Men being our team for this build.
Why these figures - Most of these characters were selected for their point values overall. I’d note that I could get closer to 800 without using Auto Regen if I’d selected the 75 point Sabretooth from Uncanny along with the 125 point LE of Cannonball. But I wanted not just a better Sabretooth, but a better Cannonball also. HSS & Willpower is nice, but defensively I’d rather have Impervious than Invulnerability.
Tips for running this team - This group is basically three groups: Your melee attackers (Rogue, Sabretooth & Cannonball), your ranged attackers (Cable, Iceman & Karima) and the nuisances (Mystique & Lady Mastermind). Now, your nuisances are going to be counting on those Shape Change rolls, but they’re the two lowest point characters, so they’re a little more expendable. And you might be keeping Karima and Cable closer to each other than Karima and Iceman. Sure, she can help both with her PD TA, but Iceman’s going to be getting closer to the opposition if he tries for his Frozen Solid attacks along with his Running Shot. But hey, if Cable gets his Leadership rolls, Karima’s going to be able to keep making attacks alongside him.
Let us know how Carey’s lineup of the X-Men did for you! That's it for this edition of Comic Accurate! Next week is an all-new Unclixed, and in two weeks it's something else!
Pure coincidence, but I just used a similar team-up this past Saturday.
Rogue's team during the Destiny Diaries run. Since our match was 800 points and I don't have the super rare Iceman, so I filled out the roster with a Cyclops and an Emma Frost (both come to help right before the double cross).
The Children of the Vault are exactly the sort of new villains that the X-books need to embrace, rather than cycling through the classics all the time. I enjoyed this run a lot, but a big part of that was that I'm a Bachalo fan.
