In a world where Heroclix is hounded by set after set of DC or Marvel characters, let’s take a moment to stop and dwell on the potential of the Indy sets. We’ve seen Yu-Gi-Oh, we’ve seen lord of the Rings. What could be lurking around the next corner? So many sets from the serious to the wacky remain to be explored! In this edition, the spotlight is on Halloween!
Fair Warning: This article may contain spoilers about the subject it reviews
For those of you who are unfamiliar, Halloween is a holiday in October where small children dress up as monsters and wander around house to house demanding candy from homeowners. Yes, that’s right, this set isn’t over something named Halloween, it’s the holiday itself. Perhaps I should explain, so I was born in October and grew up in a small town where things like Halloween are really big. I’m also known for my love of classic horror movies, books, whatever. This set is a sort of tribute to that. To Halloween, and all the monsters we know and love that come along with it.
What would the set look like? Maybe something like this . . . Common
001 Living Dead
002 Skeleton
003 Jack o’ lantern
004 Ghost
005 Nosferatu
006 The Mummy
007 The Invisibile Man
008 Black Cat
009 The Creature from the Black Lagoon
010 Witch Uncommon
011The Blob
012 Dr. Frankenstein
013 Body Snatchers
014 Dracula
015 The Wolfman
016 The Fly Rare
017 The Thing
018 Poltergeist
019 Frankenstein’s Monster
020 King Kong
021 Dr. Jekyll
022 Mr. Hyde Chase
023 Abbot and Castello
Potential powers and Traits: There are three abilities that is see as near essential to a set of monsters like this, Super Strength, Stealth, and Impervious (Or any other of the many damage reduces). Why? Essentially because they’re monsters, they have ridiculous strength or are hard to kill and are always springing from the shadows when you least expect it. Now, as we’ve seen from Amazing Spider-man sets monsters get along pretty well with their cohorts via handy Monster keyword, however there could also be some animosity in form of traits between certain characters, namely Jekyll and Hyde and Frankenstein and Frankenstein’s monster.
Keywords: Well gee, let’s think, ummm oh yeah, Monsters. but beyond that what do we have? Animal for a few and I think Scientist certainly applies to a few. Unfortunately in all their generic non-specific universe glory its hard to place unique keywords on them that are at all relevant, unless you anchor them in a universe like Marvel, but we've already seen that in Amazing Spider-man.
Character Spotlight
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Black Cat
So while this may seem like a perfectly ordinary cat, let us not forget that black cats are never a good sign, especially when they cross your path, (Or are you crossing theirs?). Thematically it seems almost essential to me in this creepy spooky theme, and as a Click I see it having Perplex, Super Senses and Battle Fury. Now depending on how much damage you think a cat could really do you could also give it Blades/Claws/Fangs, but I just can’t get behind an average cat rolling a six and ko’ing some poor click.
[i]I now realize I forgot the most scary monster of all, the creepy little girl . . .
Poltergeist
That most memorable ghosts that loves to throw things and break things and just be a general disturbance. As a click I see a lot of potential in a piece like this. Working from flavor and thematics as a usually do I look at the poltergeist’s ability with manipulating objects. I see this coming out in one of two ways, a more pedestrian Telekinesis or in a special ability. Maybe something where it actually possess an item, thus the opposing player needs destroy the object before they can hit the ghost. This could also lead to some funny shenanigans where Poltergeist possess an item than someone else picks it up and bashes yet another character.
Yes, yes, I know Gene Wilder technically played young Frankenstein, but I mean come on man. . . its Gene Wilder
Dr. Frankenstein
I’m always amazed that in lists and things that consider all the great monsters everyone always focuses on Frankenstein’s creation, but not the mad doctor that brought it all to life. If he no less a monster? After all he is the one with the intent. As a scientist character I could see him having the usual suite of intellect based abilities, Perplex, Outwit, etc. But as a doctor, I could see him having a unique version of Support where after he heals a character they get a small buff to one stat for a turn, to really bring out the good Doctor’s ‘Improvements.’
Abbot and Costello
Out of all the actual monsters on this list these two might seem a bit odd, and if you don’t know who these two are please. . . please just go, open another tab on your browser and harness the internet for a while to learn a little comic history. Abbot and Costello throughout their comedic career made several movies in which they go toe to toe with some of the more famous monsters. As a click I see them having a sort of flexible dial with lower stats but a lot of abilities, Perplex, Outwit, Sidestep, Incapacitate to name a few of the more generic ones. Maybe i just really enjoy the idea of them bumping and bumbling around a battlefield and actually somehow causing a lot of damage.
Why would Wizkids even attempt this?
Well, there is certainly someone in Wizkids who enjoy monsters hence the run in Amazing Spider-man, but why not take them from a sub set to a set of their own. Wizkids after all has done holiday themed things before *Cough*Krampus/Snowman/Elf*Cough, cough* sorry about that, flu. So there is a precedent and at least in my gaming experience these pieces they have made are incredibly popular.
What is he even doing with his hands? Being a scary monster or conducting an orchestra?
Didn't see the set the way you wanted to see it? Have an idea for a set in the future? Then please feel free to relax in the conveniently placed comment section below.
Sweet! This is a great idea and long overdue, especially for us Horror Fans
For those interested, I completed an Organized Play Kit this month in honor of Wes Craven (Swamp Thing, Freddy Krueger & Ghostface.) I know Custom Dials aren't for everyone, but feel free to click on the Link and check 'em out
I really think Dark Knight is incapable of creating anything that does not involve 80's/90's pop culture in some way. It evokes both mirth and nostalgia in me.
