Had a Thanksgiving meeting with some extended family today, and just thought I'd relate how it went. I've always been a loner in my family, but one of my cousins has started taking up tabletop gaming (basically Magic). I managed to get him and one of my other cousins to try One Night Ultimate Werewolf, and my other cousins decided to watch the strangeness. As expected, the first werewolf player had no idea how to lie about it, which is fine. I soon had a 7-player game on my hands, and we all really loved it. We played several rounds altogether. One of them was rather upset that he so consistently became a werewolf, and he never figured out how to properly lie.
The last game, I was the robber and took his card (which was a werewolf). I kinda felt bad for it, but I had to play like I was the seer and saw his card, which I declared as the werewolf. I swear, he was just about ready to flip the table right there. The other players were masons, and the doppleganger that saw a mason. I decided to throw him a bit of a bone and say I was trolling him (just switching to a different lie). I claimed to be the robber, but I took the doppleganger's card. His reaction to being outed as a werewolf right away still made everyone ready to vote him out. When he turned over his card from being executed and saw a robber, the look was absolutely priceless! I got to reveal that yes, he lost, but he managed to take everyone else with him as I revealed my werewolf!
I unfortunately had to leave after that round, but we're all looking forward to our Christmas gathering with that game. Granted, I captured some of the family I didn't think I'd get (I was hoping the inter-family bickering it makes would entice the older crowd), but it still a lot of fun.
Non-binary. Please refer to me in "they/them" pronouns. Thank you.
Been meaning to respond to this for a while... (also just a friendly note, this forum is generally for the games we play here. This thread would probably fit better in the Mafia General Discussion forum, which may be why you haven't gotten any responses yet. )
Glad to hear it went pretty well! It sounds like a fairly typical intro for new players, with some problems getting used to lying, but it's good they had fun and are looking forward to the next round. I find ONUW a game that sounds complicated but then once people start playing it and get into the spirit they really start enjoying it. Looking forward to hearing how the next session goes!
