Say 2 models are going at each other close quarters, can I shoot the enemy model with a 3rd model that is not involved in the fight from distance?

Yes as long as you have line of sight to the character you are trying to attack.

some things to consider:

If you use energy explosion, you will damage all adjacent characters including friendlies.

if you use Pulse wave, you will target all characters within range, including friendlies, and damage will be locked at 1.

you can always choose to make a plain, vanilla ranged combat attack.

Just out of curiosity, why did you think you cant? Where in the rulebook does it say anything like that?

Was told I couldn't by a friend who is teaching me the game l, with that in mind, if I'm in melee fight with a ranged guy, can I shoot a 3rd model that's not next to me?

B) There was some other reason you couldn't make a ranged attack on that figure that he didn't adequately explain. There are always all sorts of exceptions and special powers

Getting taught by another player without reading the rulebook is like playing telephone; there's always going to be some details lost or screwed up in translation. Especially if the player teaching you learned that way themselves

And before it comes up, yes I know that the rules are changing in a few months, but until then we have the current rules as they are and unless the OP wants to wait to play until the new rules come out, it wouldn't hurt for him to learn how to play the current game as is.

No. You cannot make ranged combat attacks while being adjacent to an opposing character.

But there are ofcourse exceptions to that rule. Either via the improved targeting symbol with two circles with an arrow through them (check the Powers and Abilities card) or by something specifically saying that the character to do that. E.g. See the wording on Pulse Wave.

Your friend is thinking of 40K. You can't range attack into an ongoing combat in that game.
