Can anybody tell me what the junk in the batcave means.
Why does Batman have a big dinasaur in his cave, and for that matter why does he have a big penny in the cave. These are just random artifacts that he collects? Come to think of it, they are kind of famous for just bieng there in the batcave, yeah just a random T-rex sitting over there. Does Batman like talk to his T-Rex as he comes in after a long day of throwing stuff at people? "Hello Rex." "Hello Mr. President."
And while we're on the topic, is the Robin costume Jason Todds or is it #### Graysons original costume. I always thought it was Jason's but then it could've been there longer than I thought.

They're trophies from early cases. And they just look cool.
After Jason died, Batman put Jason's costume in a glass display case.... however, in later issues, some writers had Richard's in a neighboring case..... completely crushing the idea of a memorial to Jason. Stupid writers.
I think the penny and the t-rex are specifically trophies from Golden Age cases. Like the time that Two Face had a giant penny that almost squashed Batman.... in the end the penny toppled onto Two Face, trapping him.
In current continuity, you rarely see the trophies when the cave is depicted. Plus, post the earthquake storyline, most of that stuff was destroyed.
Speaking of the cave, how cool was that recent Batman issue with the two page spread of all of the batmobiles lined up?
I think I read (in a collected edition) the giant coin issue. Two-Face had captured both Batman and Robin, but instead of having his thugs ventilate them with bullets, he ties them to a giant coin, and the flips the coin with a giant coin flipper device. (Stop for a minute and re-read that last part. How much did that cut into overhead?) Of course, Batman somehow manages to magnetize the coin, or something, causing it to land just right so they are able to escape, or something.
The moral of the story is this, in the old days, they would go a long way in a story for a gimic.

As I recall, Batman and Robin were tied with wire to the giant penny and they somehow managed, while tied up, to connect their utility belt radios to the wire for magnetic effect.
A 1950's story. I read it in an old Batman anthology book.
They explained this stuff in the cartoon. The dinosaur is actually a robot Dinosaur. Meaning it is capable of attacking, provided Batman fixed it and maintains it after he beat it.
10-2-08 I just put a bunch of stuff on eBay including a numbered Super Skrull Illuminati and a CoG Galactus. Check it out.
Actually the giant penny is from a story with Joker. Everyone remembers the giant coin that Two Face tied Batman to and flipped, but that was a giant coin with one scarred face and one normal face (like his signiture coin). Comics have depicted the back of this coin in the cave and it is a wheat penny (meaning it is NOT the two face coin).
There is a really old Joker story (in the collected greatest Joker stories ever hardcover) which has Joker robbing some sort of giant holiday pie making contest. The penny is a top the President's Day pie. It's a pretty silly story.
As with most things in comics, I don't think many writers/artists today even now the history of most of the Batcave trophies. As pointed out above, I to thought this stuff was destroyed and the trophies that weren't ended up in a back room of the new batcave, not out on the main floor.
As far as I know the penny and dinosaur are just things Batman has collected from past cases. In the case of those two items, waaaaay past cases. I won't debate what stories they came from because I can't remember or don't really know. Everyone else sounds like they explained them fairly well.
The Robin costume, to the best of my knowledge, is a memorial to Jason Todd. Also I believe Batman had it there to remind him not to take on any more partners because of the way Jason died at the hands of the Joker. Then along came Tim Drake...
The giant Penny is from a story in World's Finest 30 (1947)called "The Penny Plunderers"
There was a giant penny in a later Joker story but it came after the "Penny Plunderers."
In the Two-Face story which everyone remembers, Batman and Robin are tied to a giant two-headed silver dollar, not a penny.
The Giant T-Rex (originally a Brontosaurus and later changed)is from Batman 35's "Dinosaur Island"
Both the Penny and the T-Rex were lost down a crack in the floor of the Batcave during the "Cataclysm" event. Officially, they haven't been recovered, but I think they showed up in "Hush."
