The Infinity Stones are back and possession of them is once again becoming a threat to the universe. But six individuals taking control of them come together to make a plan on how to watch over them. In this edition of Comic Accurate, it's the new Infinity Watch!
When writer Gerry Duggan took over Guardians of the Galaxy in 2017, he kicked off a trilogy involving the return of the Infinity Stones to the Marvel Universe. Last we saw them, the gems were shattered during Jonathan Hickman's Avengers run. But in the post Secret Wars repairing of reality, they're back. And as usual, ownership of them is a dangerous thing.
Then came the second part of the trilogy in Infinity Countdown, where we learned who had gotten control of them and several fights involved in that. Who ended up with the Stones?
- The Power Stone had been found by the Guardians and the Nova Corps, with Star-Lord holding it.
- The Time Stone had been held by the Super-Skrull up until it was stolen from him by Dr. Strange.
- The Reality Stone drew Captain Marvel to it when she ended up in an alternate universe where she used it to get home.
- The Mind Stone turned up in Hell's Kitchen where low-rent thug Turk Barrett got a hold of it to move up the ladder in the criminal underworld.
- The Soul Stone was in Ultron's possession until Adam Warlock got it back with the help of several individuals like Kang and Galactus.
- The Space Stone somehow ended up in the hands of a newly-resurrected Wolverine, who then left it for Black Widow to hold on to.
After all that, Doctor Strange got in touch with all the Stone-wielders and set up a meeting to make a plan in how to guarantee they'd never be misused. A new Infinity Watch that convened in Infinity Wars #1. Now this core group is our build today, though since they all brought backup to the meeting it could have been significantly bigger (Seriously. Turk's gang could be a team unto themselves).
Note: Events at the end of issue #1 and #2 have since changed who's wielding the gems, but our build is the early goings of issue #1.
Why these figures - With the exception of Turk, the bulk of this team was selected for their points from their more recent versions. Not much more to the selection process than that, but I definitely didn't want to go too pricey on the points.
Tips for running this team - Admittedly, Turk is not going to be doing much unless he gets a stat boost from Doctor Strange's title ability and Perplexed by Black Widow and Captain Marvel. Otherwise, you wouldn't be faulted for leaving him behind. Star-Lord is going to need a taxi on this force since he's not a flier and doesn't ignore terrain, Black Widow won't have that latter problem, so she can move on her own. Not a lot of group synergy with this team, but the pieces are solid enough that it won't matter, outside of having to deal with the standard concern of facing a Stealth-based team.
Let us know how this new Infinity Watch did for you! Next week, it's a new issue of Unclixed! Then in two weeks, it's another edition of Comic Accurate!
It would be really nice to get Turk as a figure from this story arc. And yeah, his entourage could definitely make their own team, with or without Turk.
Would one of these other version of Dr. Strange work well, too?
