I'd suggest looking up floor plans for historical prisons- Alcatraz might be a good start.

are you adding terrain markers.(hindering terrain. blocking. Elevated? maybe obscuring or water)
maybe you could add doors or windows

Well for starters its not done I track progress in these threads, so you can get an idea of how much work goes into your average map.

Elevation and terrain are always the last step as they are independent of the art... so if you change the art layout all the terrain work is wasted.

I've only just dialed in on the final(ish) layout last night. This is very much an improv map. I need a prison quick and dirty... so that's what I'm churning out. That said I feel the results are hiding this origin somewhat :P

There is water coming for the "Killer Croc" holding cell.
