Today, in honour of Halloween, I'll be taking a look at some generics from the Undead set, specifically both iterations of the Grim Reaper/Death.
Both Grim Reaper and Death have very similar dials, so I won't be looking at them separately. They each have Movement: Ignores Hindering Terrain, along with 2 traits:
Harbinger Of Death: When an opposing character takes damage from an attack made by a character with the Monster keyword, after resolutions, deal that character 1 unavoidable damage. If that character is not KO'd, immediately heal it 1 click.
Basically, this trait will give friendly characters with the Monster keyword 1 additional, unavoidable damage, to attempt to KO the target. If there is no KO, the target instead heals back. For the most part, this is never a not useful effect, especially you consider that some characters can't heal beyond a certain point after they have hit that point in their dial, such as Devil Dinosaur, who can't heal back to his top clicks after hitting the STOP. Also, some characters may have effects based on taking damage from an attack, or effects that are triggered when the character is KO'd from an attack. Finally, and although this will break theme most of the time, there are effects that prevent opposing characters from healing, so you essentially get the bonus damage, without the possibility of it being healed back. The one Monster keyword character I can find/think of that applies is JLTW Frankenstein:
Giant Scythe: Blades/Claws/Fangs, Giant Reach: 2.
Traited Blades/Claws/Fangs is good, especially with Exploit Weakness being on both Grim Reaper and Death's dials, along with it being top-dial for Grim Reaper. The Giant Reach: 2 is also nice, to avoid opposing Plasticity.
While both Grim Reaper and Death are decent attackers, overall, you're playing them for their s, to maximize the damage output of the rest of the team. I wouldn't play them at 300, since they can't provide enough damage output on their own. I would like to give either of them Charge, so a possible Duhg/Splitlip/Book of the Skulls combo could make either of them a real threat. I also don't see myself using Grim Reaper over Death most of the time, since Death is basically a longer, better dial for not many more points. The only thing Grim Reaper has over Death is the top dial Exploit Weakness, but the dial feels too short compared to Death.
The team that I've built with the Grim Reaper takes all the Monster keyword synergy into account:
Basically, Ymir will be the team's primary attacker until Skeets turns into Mr. Mind. Ymir can hand out a lot of damage and action tokens, thanks to his "Stunning Blow" Incapacitate, in conjunction with Zombie Abraham Lincoln's FOUR SCORE AND SEVEN YEARS AGO special power, to potentially double token a character with no tokens. Ymir's Incapacitate special power also works with Grim Reaper's , since he is dealing damage as part of the attack. On this team, Ymir can potentially hit a character, cause them to push, deal damage, and also get the extra damage from Grim Reaper. Ymir will also be hard to kill, thanks to Dr. Frankenstein's Support, which will not have a difficult time hitting Ymir's lowish defenses. Goblin King is a tertiary attacker, as well as one of the few, best ways to get Probability Control on a Monster theme team.
That's all I have for this week. Thanks for reading, and come back in two weeks, when I'll be taking a look at another spooky generic.
I really loved these guys when they came out. Doomsday was popular around then, and they were a fun way to discourage players from playing him at weeklies.
Out of all the named factions in the Undead set the Ghost Realm is the one closest to being able to being able to have a "good" team built around the KW. The Zombie Horde comes next and only have Zombie Abe, the Shambler and a generic zombie to build arould.
With GR basically everyone can carry one other ghost, so mobility is the one role Ghost Realm has covered. Ghost of Abe has some PC, but there are no other main support powers. I am looking forward to seeing some leadership, perplex, plasticity and outwit added for a well rounded faction down the road as well as a primary attacker similar to Frankenstein's Monster. After all other than Abe everyone else currently is a secondary/tertiary attacker. I hope they add to the KW sooner rather than later.
Cheating! Grim Reaper / Death is a single entity, not generic.
Death yes... but the Reaper CAN be generic... i mean in Supernatural there are plenty of Reapers.
But yes, these guys are my favorites! Doomsday can't be healed except for his trait. you play Death and 5 Reapers... and one hit KO! (i'd have to find it, but there was a ruling that one hit would trigger all their traits... SPIN THAT DIAL)
Punisher of the Strange is a good team up:
Quote
TO END THE X-VAMPIRES: Characters with the Monster keyword and adjacent opposing characters can't be healed.
Flash, God of Death
Quote
GOD OF DEATH: Opposing characters within 6 squares and lower points can't be healed.
Contrary to popular belief, I do know what I'm doing
I like picking Jacob Marley in the team to carry Death next to the enemy, and if there's movement to spare, give the enemy -2 to attack. Add in the TMNT2 Rat King to give Marley Mystics and it can get ugly.

I've used this combo to devastating effect in the past, with four Grim Reapers and a Death. So nasty. Lots of one-hit kills.
Thanos' attacks don't combo with Death, as he doesn't have the Monster keyword, but he does indeed prevent them from getting that healing back. If you're playing him for that purpose, the 150 line might be a bit better.

Yes, and I did go with the 150 pt version, and am aware that he doesn't have the Monster keyword.
