The Heroclix Fantasy League is a system designed to use the characters and combat dials of Heroclix for a progressive, team-oriented, sports-like campaign. You begin with a group of characters and by fighting other teams, your characters and your team build up experience STATs which allow you to slowly promote your characters to higher power levels, all while staying within the parameters of the regular Heroclix combat system except as noted below.
Available Figures and the draft may be found in this thread:
Commissioner CaptainNifty - Makes all final decisions on League Policy runs the drafts and makes final rulings on upgrades and earned stats. cptnifty at gmail
Co-Commissioner pupulesurfer – does most of the actual work like putting up games and answering many of the rules questions. League wouldn’t work without him.
Co-Commissioner Doombot 3.1 - Picks up the slack for CaptainNifty and assists pupulesurfer.
Commissioners Emeritus Tanis11, TopDog, DarkCorsair and TheVagrantKing - Respect their wisdom!
New Terms
While most of the terminology in this campaign will be the same as in the regular games of Heroclix, there are some new terms that will be used in these rules and in the campaign.
• Stat Points: Much like in sports, certain characters excel at different aspects in the game of Heroclix. While Dennis Rodman lead the way in rebounds, he may not have been particularly useful at making a Three Point shot. The same can be said about Heroclix, Not every hero/villain will be able to land an attack that causes 7 clix of damage. This system allows for characters to gain experience by doing what they do best. Stat Points are what is used to promote a character to a higher level (See below)
• Experience Points (XP): Are earned through stat points and playing matches. XP are used to recruit new characters and upgrade existing characters (see below).
• Stealing: A system designed to allow thematic characters to be placed on thematic teams from teams that were not thematic, and give the original team a bit of a point supplement.
• Co-Captains: If you have a very busy Real Life that can sometime take you away from the League, but would still like to play, you may find one experienced player (who has played at least one season) and is not running a team and designate them a Co-Captain. This is a person who can play games in your absence, and make any upgrading or drafting decision in your place.
Exceptions to standard Heroclix rules.
Assembling Your Force
To start, you of course need to have a force. Your initial force will be created from a team of characters that you draft. In season 1 of a cycle players will have a total of 500 pts to draft with. In seasons 2 and 3 of a cycle teams will draft with their remaining RPs from the previous season plus the value of characters dropped at the end of the season. New teams will have points equal to the lowest number of points available for a returning team (Total of kept characters maximum point cost plus feat cost and remaining RP). In Season 14 (5-2) teams have 774 pts
Choosing a team occurs in two stages:
• The first 250 points will be chosen and submitted to your commissioner for approval. These 250 points must be from a comic accurate theme team and are known as the core. When your core is submitted a list of characters you feel are theme should also be submitted. In the long run this will speed up the draft and eliminate some stress. Themes with large rosters, will have to restrict themselves to specific line-ups. Depending on the size of the roster, it might have to be restricted even further if the roster is especially large. Cores are either hero or villain teams. If you feel your team is neutral, make your case to the commissioner. The commissioner will then have you choose hero or villain for the purpose of recruiting non-thematic characters. The order of the Core draft will be determined by sending a d1000 role to the commissioner at cptnifty at gmail. The higher the role the higher the core draft spot.
• You must have at least 2 characters in your core.
• Characters in your core may not be stolen.
• The second part is through a draft. After drafting order has been selected you can use your remaining 250 points to buy any character within your team’s universe at their cheapest carded or uncarded version in. In the second and third seasons of a cycle, characters can be drafted at any point cost that has been unlocked by any player.
• Once you have built your team, the difference in build total you have left is put in your bank. (Thus, if during the first season of a cycle you construct a 216 point team before the draft, leaving 24 points unused, you get 24 points extra for the draft immediately. If after the draft you have 274 point team, when the next draft comes around you have 10 points extra.)
• When starting your team you will begin with 1 Feat card or Special Object that is for your whole team (subject to Commissioner's approval). You use that feat on any two character on your force during any match (exceptions in the feat section below). It can be assigned to up too 2 characters who qualify for the feat. It can be re-assigned each battle. You may suggest feats that you believe to be appropriate but the commissioner will have the final say in this. The Draft
The quality of this campaign most similar "Drafting" in Fantasy Sports Leagues. The only time you can recruit is at after the "Post-Season" but before "Pre-Season", during our draft period.
At the start of a new season, all returning players will get all experience points earned during the regular season that were not used for upgrading, plus post season and "Super Bowl" point earned.
For league purposes characters are unique. Only one player can draft 616 Wolverine, but another player could draft his Ultimates or Days of Future Past counterpart. Players may only draft within their universe, may only draft characters that were actually on their team or of the same moral alignment of their team. While teams are either heroes or villains, characters are heroes, villains or neutral. Neutral characters may be on a team of any alignment. The Available Figure list in the Resource Thread has the characters already separated and their alignments listed.
A team with a thematic claim on a character may still draft that character even if it was drafted by another team. At the end of the round in which the character was drafted, a team with a thematic claim can choose to steal the character. To steal a player will PM the commissioner their intention. A steal costs 150% of the character’s drafted value. If two players would have thematic claim on a character and both attempt to steal, the commissioner will ask the players to submit bids (minimum 150% of the character’s drafted value). The player that submits the highest bid recruits the character. The points from the stealing are awarded to the original drafter. A player that successfully steals may pay additional xp to purchase the character at a higher point value than originally drafted. A player that has had their pick stolen will receive a compensation pick at the end of the round.
Draft order is the reverse of the players standing from the previous season. New players are placed in the middle of the draft in reverse order of their Core Draft.
During the Draft players will take turns picking a character to add to their team. Players get 1 figure per round (generic exceptions as noted elsewhere in the rules). The League utilizes a "Snake Draft" which means each round the draft order reverses. The draft lasts until all players have declared they are finished drafting. Players with 0 RP are automatically finished drafting.
At the end of drafting, you must maintain at least 2 members that still have affiliation with your chosen team.
After the Character Draft Their will be a 6 round Map and BFC draft. Each team drafts 3 of each.
After Game 3 a Midseason Draft will be held where each player may draft 1 character. Order is determined by reverse ranking.
Trading
Trading occurs only during designated times each season. Characters, Recruitment Points (RPs), and draft slots are all acceptable things to trade. These are restricted based off of which phase of the season we are in.
Phase 1: Core Draft – Draft slots may be traded for RPs with anyone participating with in the core draft.
Phase 2: The Draft – Characters, RPs, and draft slots maybe traded.
Phase 3: Pre-season to Game 4 – Characters, RPs, and mid-season draft slots may be traded at the end of any game.
Phase 4: Game 5 to 7 – Characters and RPs may be traded at the end of any game.
RPs and characters may be traded across universes, but draft slots may not be.
Traded characters are considered "Locked-in" and cannot be stolen by another player
Moral Alignment still restricts trading. Selecting a Squad
At the beginning of each battle, you must select a force out of your team that will engage the opponents.
All games during season 1 of a cycle are 400 pts. Preseason and the first 3 games of season 2 are 400 points while games 4-6 and the play-offs are 500 points. All games in season 3 are 600 points.
You may only use game elements on your force. Characters may be played at any point value that has been unlocked (see “Gaining Experience” and “Upgrades” below). Sideline may only contain elements from the team that the player actually owns. Characters like Chameleon or Animal Man who gain powers and abilities from having other characters on their sideline, may use characters that they are not fielding to put on their sideline. Additional characters may be bought for the purpose of putting on the sideline by using an upgrade. The upgrade must be the cost of the character or 50 XP whichever is higher and must be from the same universe as the character using the upgrade.
A player must submit all game elements when their squad is submitted including feats, objects, constructs, word balloons, or sideline characters.
All games will last 10 turns or 2 weeks max.
Once your force is assembled PM the Force to the assigned commissioner who will put the match up.
Virtual Keywords
The HCFL uses a modified version of the keyword rules.
All versions of all characters (1) who were chosen in the initial 250-point core or (2) who are an actual part of the team in the comic/film that the team is named for are deemed to have their team name as a named keyword. This rule applies even if the team name is not an actual official Heroclix keyword.
These virtual keywords are used only for Themed Team Probability Control purposes and act as keywords during initiative roll.
Once per season a team that qualifies as a theme team may cancel a Battle Field Condition.
Example 1: In a 300-point game, a Defenders team is fielded that consists of V Dr. Strange (SI--149 pts) and Hulk (GF#201--145 pts). Although that version of Hulk does not have the Defenders keyword on his character card, he is deemed to have the Defenders keyword for HCFL purposes. Consequently, this Defenders team is a theme team for HCFL purposes and can use Theme Probability Control.
Example 2: In a 300-point game, a Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway team is fielded that consists of V She-Hulk (Hulk--105 pts), V Awesome Andy (131 pts), and Two-Gun Kid (50 pts). Even though "Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway" is not (as of this writing) an official Heroclix keyword, it is deemed to be a keyword for HCFL purposes, and this team is a theme team for HCFL purposes."
Example 3: Cyborg (Teen Titans 103), Martian Manhunter(10th Anniversary 100 pts) and E Aquaman (teen titans 80 pts) are on a Justice League Nu52 team. This team would not be considered theme. Martian Manhunter and Aquaman both share the Justice League keyword. Cyborg and Aquaman are both thematic for a Nu52 Justice League, but Cyborg lacks the keyword. You cannot mix and match.
Gaining Experience
Experience is earned in the following ways:
• There are 4 categories in which a character can earn a "Stat Point":
Successful Attack [SA]: An SA is earned when a player makes a successful attack. A successful attack is defined as any time one character affects another character as a result of an attack roll. 1 SA is worth 5 XP
Knock Out [KO]: A character earns a KO when as a result of an SA or use of a power, ability, team ability, trait, or feat a character deals enough damage to an opposing character to Knock it out. 1 KO equals 10 XP.
Assist [AST]: A character earns an AST when through the use of any of that character's powers, abilities, team abilities, traits, or feats (that has not yet been used to earn a stat previously in that round) allows another character to earn an SA that would have otherwise been unsuccessful or less effective without the first character's assistance. 1 AST equals 5 XP
(Example: I attack someone on their last clix of life. I already do 3 damage. I modify my damage up one with perplex. No AST given, because the attack would have caused the KO normally)
Defend [DFD]: A character earns a DFD when though the use of a power, ability, team ability, trait or feat that character a) causes an attack made by an opposing character to not succeed against another friendly character or b) prevents an opposing character from using a power, team ability, trait or feat that would deal damage to another friendly character or c) prevents an opposing player from making any attack or d) if an opposing character fails a breakaway roll a friendly character receives a DFD. 1 DFD is equal to 5 XP
So for instance, I have Moondragon TK the Hulk who's carrying a Heavy Object, and the Hulk then attacks Blue Beetle and does 6 damage. Moondragon would earn 1 AST Stat Point, Hulk would earn 1 SA Stat Point and 1 KO Stat Point.
*At the end of each game player’s will receive 5% of the build total in xp to be distributed evenly among all characters on that game’s squad, or this can be banked for recruitment points (RP).
*When a player fields a force that all share the same Named Keyword, or are thematic for League purposes (would qualify to be in the player’s core), that player receives an additional 5% end game xp that can be evenly distributed or used as RP.
Upgrades occur at the end of the regular season matches. You may upgrade to a new version of a character, a new feat, or special object by spending XP equal to the cost of the feat or object or the difference between the current maximum point value of the character and the version the to which the player wishes to upgrade. A player must pay at least 50 points for an upgrade even if the element they are buying costs less than 50 points. A player may use any version of a character for that is worth an equal or fewer amount of points than the highest version that has purchased.
Example: The Injustice League has Lex Luthor at 50 pts. Lex earns 50 XP. The player could use that XP at the end of the game to upgrade to Lex Luthor 100 pts, or upgrade to a Feat like Protected 8 pts, or purchase an object like Green Kryptonite, or save the XP for a bigger upgrade in the future. So if the player sits on Lex’s experience points until Lex has a total of 200 XP. Lex could be upgraded to Lex Luthor, God of Apokolips 250 pts, or spend 50 XP on Protected 8 pts, or 50 XP on Green Kryptonite. The player could NOT use 100 XP to upgrade to Lex Luthor 150 pts, 50 XP on Protected, and 50 XP on Green Kryptonite.
Injuries
If a character takes damage from a roll of 6, 6 roll or rolls 1, 1 in a battle, if they are used in the next game, the player asks the commissioner for an injury roll. On a roll of 1, range is effected (reroll if effected character has 0 range). On a roll of 2, speed is effected. On a roll of 3, attack is effected, on a roll of 4, defense is effected. On a roll of 5 damage is effected. On a roll of 6, player may choose (may not choose range if the character has 0 range). Effected stat is treated as if the printed value is 1 less than the actual value. Each effected stat represents an injury. On roll is made for each 6, 6 or 1, 1 roll that effects that character. A character is healed of one injury after each game after the injury occurs.
A character does not heal from an injury if they are injured in a subsequent game. The character does not have to be part of a force to heal from an injury.
Injuries are ignored during practice games. (Pre-Season or No-Contest Games)
Tactics
At the beginning of the season, each team will select one team feat or object. At least two figures on the team must be able to use the feat, and feats can be applied to up to any two characters during any game of the season. Only one copy of an object may be fielded.
• Feats and objects can be bought instead of promoting a character by using the same pre-requisites of Stat Points.
• Limitations:
1) 'In Contact With Oracle' and 'Warbound' are considered to be additional team abilities, and require theme considerations to be applied to a character.
2) Additional Team Abilities are purchased like feats.
3) Protected will not be given as a team feat. Contingency Plan and Protected can only have one used per game. (i.e. multiple figures on your team can upgrade to protected, but you can only use one copy per match).
4) The extra points awarded from Vendetta are only used to determine if a team won or lost in the event of a tie or time. They will not effect a teams overall victory total.
6) Resources, Vehicles, ID Cards and Yugioh Traps and Spells may not be drafted or upgraded to. Characters that generate or turn in to vehicles may still be drafted
7) Constructs and Word Ballons may be upgraded in the same manner as Feats/Objects, but only by characters that have a power or trait that lets them begin with a construct or Word Ballon in play.
8) Themed Team Probability Control can only be used on an opponents turn if the exact scenario under which the TTPC will be used and the figure to whom the token will be assigned is specified.
EXAMPLES:
Green Lantern will take a token to use TTPC if Superman is going to be damaged passed his 3rd click.
TTPC will be used on a crit-hit. Priority of Tokens: Green Lantern, Cyborg, Wonder Woman, Flash. Superman will never use TTPC.
Objects
Objects must be sent in with the rest of the force. The tank turret is available as an upgrade. It is the only Ultra-heavy object available. Ultra-light Objects are not available.
The following objects must receive Commissioner approval:
ASGARDIAN SHIELD
BATARANG

Maps/BFC
Each team begins the season with 3 maps and 3 BFCs. Each game a player will send a map and BFC with their squad. When a map or BFC is used in a game, it cannot be reused until all elements of that type have been used.
Example in Round 1 the Outsiders submit Titans Tower as the map and Deep Shadows for the BFC. They win initiative, and choose to be the visiting team and play Deep Shadows. The next round they submit Titans Tower for the map and Shrunk for the BFC. They are home team and use Titans Tower. They cannot use Titans Tower or Deep Shadows in another match until their other two maps or BFCs have been used in a game. Special Characters
Generics
If a team bought a generic in draft, and there choice was thematic, they could buy as many versions as they are willing to pay xp for.
The xp acquired by each generic is pooled. A player may choose to upgrade to additional generics at the end of each game instead of upgrading to a more expensive version by spending 50 XP or an amount of XP equal to the cost of the generic whichever is higher.
1) It would need to be a 100% thematic choice. So if the JLA pick up a HDC Trooper, they can only get one of him, and he would upgrade as normal with no option of recruiting additional HDC Troopers.
2) If a player wishes to trade a generic, they can only trade one version to another player. If they do so, they lose all other version bought, which are automatically cashed out for recruitment points.
Duo Characters
A player may use a Duo Character if they own all characters associated with the Duo, and the combined point value of the individual figures is equal to or greater than the duo. XP is split evenly between the merged characters.
Vehicles
Figures with the may not be drafted.
Entities
Entities and figures with similar mechanics (Jocasta and Sins) may be drafted at their highest point cost only, and may not be played at their possession level.
Promotion/Reversion
Players must have the character they wish to promote to.
Alter Ego
Players may use the Alter Ego mechanic even if they do not normally have access to the figure the Alter Ego is a part of. Alter Ego must be sent in on Sideboard with the team.
Spawning
Characters that "spawn" other characters Like Squirrel Girl, Ultron, Darkseid, or Mysterio earn stats for the drafted figure. These spawned characters are not subject to injury or benching, but the character that created them are. If the spawned element is not a bystander token, then the character must use upgrades to get additional elements.
Copycat
When Copycat swaps with a character on an opposing force, Copycat's owner earns stats for her from the swapped character, and the swapped character's owner earns stats for the swapped character by using Copycat.
Post-Game Etiquette
At the end of each match players are required to send their current Stat Point accumulation for each character on the team, and your total recruitment points earned thus far, to a designated official or post them at the end of your match.
Also notate any injured characters.
Delay of Games; Absences; Byes
1) If a player cannot post in their game they should call for a sub. Subs earn 2 RP for their own team for each turn they sub. Subs may only take 1 turn per day.
2) If a player fails to post a turn within 48 hours their opponent may call for a sub and PM the player that has not posted and the commissioner. If the absent player or a sub fail to post a turn in 24 hours from the time the post was made on this thread calling for the sub or timestamp on the above mentioned PM, the absent player will be considered to have passed their turn, and the opposing player may take a turn. This cycle repeats as necessary.
3) If a player has a bye week they will be given a win worth 0 victory points.
Scheduling
All games will last 10 turns or 2 weeks max.
There is 1 pre-season game where stats and bonus XP can be earned but does not count toward standings
There are 6 regular season games where stats and bonus XP can be earned and do count for standings
Matches consist of one game each. Pairings in the first round are determined randomly. After the first round, the commissioner determines pairings by standing, including tiebreakers; for example, the player with the best record faces the player with the second-best record, the player with the third-best record faces the player with the fourth-best record, and so on. The commissioner must take care to avoid any rematches during Swiss rounds, pairing players with the next lower rated player instead (and so on, until a match is found). Rematches are acceptable only once Swiss rounds have ended and championship rounds have begun (when championship rounds are used).
Round 1 match-ups will be randomly assigned. Initiative is rolled each round to determine who is home and who is visitor. A themed team that uses printed keywords (not taking advantage of Virtual Keywords) gets an additional +1 on their initiative roll in addition to the normal keyword bonus. Home team provides a map and chooses which player goes first. Visitor provides a BFC.
Playoffs and Championship
The top 4 teams will have a play off. The winner in each division of the play-off will compete in the Championship Game.
No experience points are earned during the playoffs.
Each team will choose 1 map or BFC from their drafted listed to reuse during each playoff game. They may not reuse maps that they have used during the playoffs
Playoff Bracket will look like this:
Round 1:
A: 1 v. 4
B: 2 v. 3
Finals
A v. B
End of Season
At the end of the season players will return all characters from another universe back into the draft pool and receive RP equal to the characters’ value. The Champion may keep all of their characters from their universe. Play-off teams may keep 4 in-universe characters. Teams that do not make the play-offs may keep 3 in-universe characters. Teams receive the point value for all characters and feats returned to the draft pool. Kept thematic characters are considered a new core during the next season and are unable to be stolen by other teams. Non-thematic characters are not protected from stealing.
Players may re-brand their team for the following season by declaring a new theme as long as all of the characters kept this way are thematic to the new theme.
If the player is keeping or rebranding their team they may keep any non-character specific objects that they upgrade to.
Kept characters and characters gained during the draft keep XP from the previous season if they are acquired during the draft by the player who owned them the previous year.
A player may cash in their entire team to pick an entirely different theme and team the following season.
Next Season
The draft for the following season will be determined by the record of the players’ previous season. Draft will be conducted from lowest ranking to highest ranking. New players will draft after the highest ranking non-playoff team has drafted, but before the lowest ranking play-off team in reverse core draft order.
In a reboot (0.1) season, the previous season’s Champion will get the first spot in the Core Draft.

Do I post my pick here, or do I PM you? How many drafts can I do at once?
PM me with as many picks as you have points for. We do them one round at a time.

• The second part is through a draft. After drafting order has been selected you can use your remaining points to buy any character within your team’s universe at their cheapest carded or uncarded version in. In the second and third seasons of a cycle, characters can be drafted at any point cost that has been unlocked by any player.
