While we are getting the umpteenth versions of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Batman and Superman, there are still oh so many more or less popular characters out there that are still waiting impatiently for their Heroclix debut. In this edition of Unclixed, we look forward to the new year with our top ten wants for 2019!
A new year is upon us! 2018 is the past and 2019 is the future! So it's time to anticipate what figures we could be seeing over the next twelve months! At the writing of this article, we're aware of only a few sets slated to come out: Earth X, Rebirth and the Star Trek: The Next Generation gravity feeds. There’s been no confirmation of what the summer and end of the year releases will be, but if history is any indicator, expect more Marvel than DC. Wizkids did announce they had gotten the license to WWE properties, but there hasn't been any official solicit for any sets yet. (NOTE: At the time of the writing of this article, WizKids announced the Black Panther & Illuminati set, which took care of the original pick I had for the #2 spot.)
With all that said, let’s start the list…
HONORABLE MENTION: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Yes, I know the Next Generation sets are slated to come out in June and September, so the odds of a DS9 set coming out before the end of the year are slim and none. So this year's honorable mention is just the hope for an announcement. And that the set is bigger than a gravity feed since DS9 had so many recurring characters that it'd be a shame for several important characters to get unmade.
10. (TIE) Black Mariah & Shades
A big part of this year's list is going to be characters that have mainstream audience appeal. Characters that people outside of the average comic fan will know or end up knowing from TV and movies present and future. And although Luke Cage was cancelled this year, two of his bigger adversaries should definitely make their Heroclix debut. This also applies to the non-Serpent Society versions of Cottonmouth, Diamondback and Bushmaster too, but we have to start somewhere. Of course, the versions pictured from the Netflix series look nothing like their comic counterparts, but again, we gotta start somewhere in getting Luke's rogues gallery in HeroClix.
9. Abigail Arcane
Swamp Thing is character with a respected history in DC Comics and the Vertigo imprint. But he doesn't have a frequent presence in HeroClix. Just an occasional piece made every few years. And when he's made, he barely gets anyone else from his comic to play with or against. Just the one version of Anton Arcane. Swamp Thing's beloved significant other, and Anton's niece has yet to debut, despite her importance to the series. So with Swampy coming back to television through the DC Universe app later in 2019, it might be time to finally make the love of Alec's life in HeroClix.
8. Trinary
2018 got us a lot of new and contemporary young Mutants made in the Xavier's School set. They covered a lot of ground and plenty of fresh faces made their debut. But there's always room for more. And in Tom Taylor's X-Men: Red series, a new member to an X-Men roster was introduced. Trinary has control over technology and helped turn a Sentinel into a mobile headquarters for the newly returned Jean Grey's team. And despite the fact that 2019 may see some pared down teams in the X-Universe, it couldn't kill them to make at least one more for that line up.
7. Frank McGee
2018 was kind of a rough year for the Inhumans. After the TV miniseries bombed in 2017, the varied books featuring Attilan's royal family came to an end. Royals and Black Bolt's series culminated in Judgment Day and the recent Death of the Inhumans effectively put the nouveau-Mutantlike franchise to bed for the time being. But that doesn't mean the end of the line for many characters introduced in that span of time. Frank McGee, the former head of security for the Inhuman police force would soon make his way into recent Daredevil books, helping Matt Murdock in his separate investigations into Wilson Fisk and Wolverine. Also as a guy in a suit with sunglasses, it'd probably be an easy sculpt for WizKids.
6. Mayhem
Way back in the day, specifically the 80's, the superhero tandem of Cloak & Dagger knew a police officer on the NYPD named Brigid O'Reilly. But as comics are wont to do, the poor detective didn't end up staying as a simple officer of the law. She was eventually changed by a poison gas into a green toxic villain that would be a part of Cloak & Dagger's small but persistent rogues gallery. And with the Freeform TV series getting a second season, it might be useful to have a villain for them to fight.
5. Emiko Queen
During the New 52 run of Green Arrow, it was revealed that Robert Queen had a daughter outside of his marriage. A daughter that would be raised as an assassin, because why not? Kids raised to be assassins worked over in the Bat-books. And much like the kids in the Bat titles, that little girl turned killer would eventually be swayed over to the light side of heroism and join Green Arrow as the new Red Arrow. Currently she's joined up with Damian Wayne's Teen Titans. And spoiler alert:
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
She's in the new season of Arrow!
4. Aqualad
Seems every year in this list, someone from Aquaman's pool of characters is included. And usually based around the idea that HeroClix would capitalize on him having a movie out. This list isn't going to be too different. You'd think if Heroclix would base sets around Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern, that Aquaman would get something. And this isn't just about Aquaman, it's that the Young Justice animated series is back and being able to play a team based on its core roster should be a given.
3. Bluebird
Whether one feels there's too many Bat-centric characters and themes in HeroClix or not, the reality is that they're a staple of DC sets. And as it turns out, in all the remakes of Batman, Robin, Batgirls and so on, there's been some new faces in the Gotham crimefighting scene that have yet to be made. While Duke Thomas, The Signal was announced for the Rebirth set, there's also another name that premiered in that time: Harper Row, a young engineering savant who wanted to help Batman and eventually ended up striking out on her own.
2. The New Age of DC Heroes
The Dark Knights: Metal event had a lot of repercussions for the DC Universe in this Rebirth era. One such effect was the launch of a new line of characters. New characters like Silencer, Sideways, Brimstone and an all-new Damage. Teams like The Terrifics, The Unexpected, The Immortal Men and The New Challengers And as the Rebirth set has announced a new version of Mr. Terrific, making some others from the new line would make for a good subtheme.
1. Mime & Marionette
I don't think it would be too beyond the pale to imagine that at some point, a DC set will include remakes of Watchmen characters. With the Doomsday Clock miniseries still going and an HBO series on the horizon, it's very plausible and I'm hoping for next year. So when this happens, it should make sense to include the two new faces in the Watchmen pantheon, the murderous duo of Mime & Marionette (loosely based off of Punch and Jewelee). Either as a singular piece or two separate ones.
So what unclixed characters are you hoping to see in the upcoming sets? What do you think themes will comprise sets for the back end of 2019? Feel free to reply as that's it for this edition of Unclixed! Be here next week for our year end Comic Accurate look back at 2018! And in two weeks, Unclixed will be back to normal!
10: Amos Fortune ( Maybe with his Royal Flush Gang remade for modern? )
09: The Raiders ( A trio of armored mercenaries who are Iron Man foes )
08: Sportsmaster ( Golden Age Green Lantern and JSA villain )
07: Darkoth the Death Destroyer ( Oh yeah! )
06:Lightning ( or Light ) Lass ( C'mon we've been promised her for years! )
05: The G.I. Robot ( Classic J.A.K.E. no modern junk! )
04: The Mighty Destroyer ( Stan Lee's first hero and a terrifying anti-Axis smasher! )
03: Death Stalker and the Ani-Men ( what they go together.... )
02: Congorilla ( Wild dial with both Congo Bill and Congorilla )
01: Ultimo ( Just in case we get some colossal clix! )
Honorable Mention: I know he's had a click long ago in the Giant Set but we need a new Chemo before my Metal Men are completely unable to stand up to the modern figures.
"I may not see the road I ride for the witch-fire lamps that gleam;"But phantoms glide at my bridle-side, and I follow a nameless Dream." R.E. Howard
I guess with the article series being called Unclixed Stan Lee wasn't going to make it, but we so need him to return. I'm suggesting an OP kit of all Stan, reuse the existing sculpt and update the dial for 50pts and modern age.
With the announced sets thus far for 2019, most these probably will remain unclixed. Something out of leftfield...Archer HeroClix, everyone is basically a spy or spy adjacent, could be hilarious like Deadpool meets Spy vs. Spy.
Wanna trade? Check out my H/W list -------------------------V
10. Cinderblock: I'd be happy seeing an unclixed Titans villain.
9. Bruiser: (https://comicvine.gamespot.com/bruiser/4005-29240/) Imagine having a big thug who can be given *any* keyword for +5 points.
8. Vril Dox: Let's fill out the LEGION keyword, and have a trait that interacts with Lobo.
7. Sleeper IV: A walking tank that would help fill out the Skeleton Crew.
6. Codename: Bravo: Great Cap villain that would get a huge bonus for being on a map named Nowhere.
5. Lexcorp Trooper generics: We have some uncarded Lexcorp Battlesuits; just give 'em an upgrade.
4. Wild Pack generics: Wild Pack is a keyword with some real potential, and there are actually a fair amount of clixed members. How about some generics?
3. Beetle (Abner Jenkins): We've never gotten a carded figure of the original Beetle. In fact, we're missing plenty of original Thunderbolts.
2. Super-Patriot (John Walker): Before he became the replacement Cap, and before US Agent, John Walker was a Trump-esque goon who went around the country in a costume, holding racist rallies.
1. Sin-Eater (Stan Carter): The villain from the acclaimed Spider-Man storyline - even better if he comes with an Officer Carter piece to switch out, or a copycat pog.
I want to echo your votes for Mime and Marionette, they have instantly become some of my favorite characters. Aqualad is also a great vote.
I also want to plug some unmade lanterns and legionairs, such as Light Lass, Dragonmage, Quizlet, Isamot Kol, Vath Sarn, and Bzzd. To wrap up DC please give us Kamandi, original OMAC, and some Atomic Knights.
For Marvel I know their under FF ban, but I want Nathaniel Richards (both SHIELD and future versions), Valeria Richards, and Bently 13.
Some more alpha flight. I think there are only like 4 modern pieces out right now and three of them are WK figures. There is quite a lot of characters unclixed from any version of that comic series
1. A new T.O. Morrow: I’m a big of Dr. Morrow after ‘52’ plus the robot team could use a support piece specializing in robot theme.
2. Doctor Ivo: given his many forms and the creator of Amazo I can see him having multiple switch dials.
3. A new Modok: we need an AIM theme comeback and who better to bring back than a new modern Modok.
4. A new Amazo: I was disapointed by the LE version, I’m open to either a traditional or New 52 version of the character.
5. Red Torpedo: I’m a fan of Red/Morrow family since Young Justice. I could see her doing a full charge straight line akin to Nova but only occupying water terrain.
6. A new Red Tornado: Again open to New 52 or traditional.
7. Fixer: More Masters Of evil and Aim
8. Red Volcano: another robot to the Morrow or Ivo family.
9. Ultimus: We need more Kree/Starfoce
10. Shatterax: same as number 9.

They say the best weapon is one you never have to fire. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once. That's how Dad did it, that's how America does it, and it's worked out pretty well so far." Robert Downey/Tony Stark
