My one experience: I tried using a location bonus for the first time "Conservatory" from the Poison Ivy greenhouse, with the BTAS FF Poison Ivy on my team. In the one game I got to use the map, the advantage was the map layout itself. I never used the map power because this was a 200-point, 2-action game. Obviously that map allows for Biting Vines almost everywhere. In the second game, I lost map choice, so the consolation was used to place hindering terrain markers along the opposing team's approach allowing for more Biting Vines.
My team did well, but I feel like it was all due to the choice of the specific Poison Ivy. Otherwise, I really don't see myself investing in this location except under rather extreme circumstances such as:
I can somehow get Map choice (Nightmare, She-Hulk, or a large theme team) and the Rookie HT Poison Ivy can sit back and attack with the terrain.
I'm playing with figures that specifically rely on Hindering Terrain and I can use the consolation (For defense e.g. Stealth, or offense e.g. HQ Nightshade) in some way.
Other location bonuses seem to be a little more wide-open in terms of character choices: Any Robin (Carrie Kelly!) can benefit from "From the Rooftops" for just 2 points, and the Batman/Joker bonuses are solid (form map choice or consolation). The Heist would work great using the rare HQ Catwoman with her 50-50 chance to steal the Cats-Eye from an opposing character, but any highly mobile Catwoman may just get there first!
I'm curious to read about other folks use of the locations, and the choice of figures/teams to go with each. It is rare that I ever win map choice, even with theme teams, so I'd also like to read how the consolation has factored into your play.
Personally, I enjoy the Iceberg Lounge bonus as well, between running FF Penguin on Gotham Teams, Gotham City Underworld themes, and some Politician teams in the future. The sheer utility you get out of 4 Seals is just amazing.
I also enjoy Ha-Ha Hacienda's (specifically for competitive). Either giving the Joker +1 Attack or the map making Krakoa-style attacks is amazing.
I've also run the Gotham Waterfront bonus to great effect, along with Super Strength characters. Regardless of winning map roll or not, the 5 points are well worth it.
I love location bonuses. I've used the museum a ton. My favorite use was a Soldier team involving Slate. Man-Thing Soldier and BTAS Green Lantern were basically my diamond transporters, and Slate would gobble it up in the starting area. 13 attack with Barrier to Pulse Wave as though he were in one of those barriers is sick! I've gotten to use it with Hawkman/Hawkgirl decently enough, as well.
Non-binary. Please refer to me in "they/them" pronouns. Thank you.
My daughter, JohannaMason, was quite thrilled to learn that for 5 points she can add a penguin bystander to any team, or more if she gets the map. Given that she loves penguins that's her go-to point filler.
I go with yay! For the cost of an ID card, you get stuff that can effect the entire game, not just 1 turn.
I am really looking forward to the Earth X map location bonus, the potential to generate a 0 point bystander with Probability Control for 5 points, oh hell yeah!
FF Poison Ivy on her map, sprinkle Perplex and Empower and those vines can gobble up teams and their actions don't count.
Penguins Lounge with 4 seals that can chuck light objects at colossal retailators, sign me up.
Need your Batman to be able to Outwit somebody in Stealth, Gotham City Downtown.
etc., etc.
Wishing for competitive Judge Dredd figures for Modern Age...WizKids are you listening?!?!
Put me on the Yay-Ess side !! I have only used the Downtown Gotham map bonuses w/ Batarang-Bats and chase Robin, but intend to use the others as build formats allow. The maps are interesting in-and-of themselves, so to get an additional benefit from including them on my force is well worth 5-points.
I've also run the Gotham Waterfront bonus to great effect, along with Super Strength characters. Regardless of winning map roll or not, the 5 points are well worth it.
Gotham Waterfront is pretty great with Jakar, as well. The problem with triple TK is running out of objects so quickly. Enter Gotham Waterfront. Even the consolation can let you start with 6 heavy objects. Great!
