Ready for a story about superheroes? Or what if I told you this was actually a story about super-zeroes? Losers, achingly pathetic meta-human goose eggs. But don't call them Legends... Er, wait... That's a different show. Never mind. In this edition of Comic Accurate, it's the new TV series, Doom Patrol!
Last year, DC and Warner Bros. rolled out the DC Universe online platform. This subscription service would have comics, classic TV, cartoons and most importantly, new live action shows. The first of which was Titans, made by Greg Berlanti, the producer of almost every other DC show on the air right now. And much like his shows on the Arrowverse, it was soon announced that Titans would have its own spin-off; The Doom Patrol.
Starring Brendan Fraser (Robotman), Matt Bomer (Negative Man), April Bowlby (Elasti Girl), Diane Guerrero (Crazy Jane), Joivan Wade (Cyborg) and Timothy Dalton (The Chief), the series follows the misadventures of the original superhero team of misfits. The first episode introduces the audience to these characters, but it's the second episode where everything kicks into gear.
Without fully spoiling, by the end of the pilot, The Chief is missing in action and the four metas that are under his care team with Detroit vigilante Cyborg. This is our team for the build...
Why these figures - Well, mainly obvious reason for picking the majority of them is the ol' standby of they're either the newest and more playable versions of a character (Rita and Robotman), they're the only option (Jane and Negative Man) and that just left picking a version of Cyborg that fit a decent point cost before filling the remaining points with feats for filler.
Tips for running this team - For starters, you're not going to get much mileage out of Cyborg's Enhancement, since the only other character with range is Jane and it's way worse. Just use Jane for her support powers if you can roll them, maybe keep her near Negative Man after he pops out his Negative Spirit. Then have the Spirit, Robotman and Elasti-Girl getting up close and personal while Cyborg runs around taking shots at people. If you get the map roll, choose something with some blocking or walls so Rita can use that Camouflage to become a big ol' shield for her teammates.
Let us know how The Doom Patrol did for you! Next week, it's a new issue of Unclixed! Then in two weeks, it's another edition of Comic Accurate!
Nice build! It’s interesting to me that they put Cyborg on the Doom Patrol for this show—on the one hand, he does work thematically, and I’m sure there are rich character contrasts to be drawn with Robotman and Negative Man; on the other hand, can there be a DC team he’s not on? He can only be in one place at a time; he’s not a Flash!
I’ll probably never shut up about how much I love that Elastigirl. 100pts with no Indom seems like a tougher sell these days, but 11/11/18/4 (for a nine-square reach, ignoring everything but indoor Blocking!) holds up. Her ability to drop to Tiny size helps the classic problem of Colossals where they get tokened up and then shot apart on the approach. Giving her the Camouflage feat is a great idea that I hadn’t considered!
If anyones on the fence about the show, do yourself a favor and check it out.
I was dreading Titans after that initial trailer like everyone else, then loved the show, and Doom Patrol is already fantastic.
Elasti is a blast. I always play her. Best 300 points Doom Patrol team (although disrespectful AF) is 2 Elasti at 100 points, 1 The Chief and 1 Elasti at 50 points. Really.
I really dig the show and I'm glad they went a different direction with Cyborg. I'm sick of the broody, whiny, version from the Justice League film, the animated movie and even Young Justice: Outsiders.
I committed to building a villain team for this week's game otherwise I would have went with some form of Doom Patrol.
I want to use a Cliff but he is SO expensive. I'm scared he won't carry his weight.
Crazy Jane has worked well for me and Rita Farr is a phenomenal figure. Once, I was handed her in a pass-the-trash scenario. "Really?" She destroyed. She really is a star.
Negative Man always fails me. Wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe it is accurate to the show.
Good article and a fun build.
Visible Dials and Pushing Damage need to be optional. This is the way.

I haven’t had a chance to see Doom Patrol yet but I’ll echo the Titans love. I was pleasantly surprised by it. I really did enjoy it. Sometimes it leaned a little too hard into the violence but overall was good.

I cannot imagine a better legacy for my cousin.
Elastigirl just like in the old comics does the heavy lifting for the Doom Patrol, Cliff is there because he's by far the most likely to survive "Weird Resurrection" ( which is also pretty comic accurate ) and he bats cleanup for Rita.
Larry runs some mean interference and the Chief lends buffs and nerfs as needed.
I've run them in three tournaments and while they'll never be meta they are a lot of fun.
Although I usually run them with Beast Boy so I can bring out my T-Rex and all his other animal forms ( can you believe they never gave him a gorilla form? ). Newer players seem to get a blast out of them and a good time is had by all.
Here is a good little trick to run with Larry if he gets based while his Negative Spirit is out.
Push the Spirit to K.O., then when the Spirit is off the board use Penetrating Poison with Larry then power action to pop out another Spirit, poison with the Spirit and if your lucky you might even get another hit in with the Spirit or finish the harasser off with Cliff or Beast Boy while Rita holds things down at the front.

thanks for the article. from a thematic perspective, I find cyborg redundant on the team, and weird in how they're pushing him everywhere. but I still can't get over the fact there's a doom patrol show at all. wild times, my friends.
my 8 year old daughter has to read 20 minutes after school for homework every day. so I have her read me a chapter from the showcase collection and she loves it. nothing like silver age comics to expand the vocabulary and challenge the reading skills. plus I get to write down in her reading log "Doom Patrol: 8 Against Eternity," Doom Patrol: The Blazing Behemoth," etc. great times
wf was such an underestimated set. the generic generics distracted from tons of great dials

I enjoy these articles but i wish they wouldn't have so many Feats on the teams
It's been 8 years since they last had Feats in sets. Our venue runs mostly Golden Age and still no one ever brings them. Most players don't even know what they are anymore except for us old pros lol
