Flaming Eternity: True power lies in the Flames
By Adam Kline
With the release of each new set, people sit in eager pining for the new wave of possibilities that can be brought out of each new card. Remembering back to when Japan for sets almost a year before us, we only now get a scant month or two between set releases. People have been clamoring to get their decks ready to combat the new threats, and adopt the powerful new allies in their duels. Flaming eternity is a shining example of the duelists cry for a more powerful set, and delivers us a plethora of cards that might even deserve a limiting, and even a restriction!
Read on for more here!
Ever found yourself struggling against all the stall decks out there, the ones that either attack under the protection of Level Limit Area-B, or hold back with burn cards and lava golems? Now there’s an answer! Phoenix Lord of Nefthys not only has a handy little effect which allows it to be special summoned (a la Vampire Lord) when its destroyed as a result of a card effect, but will destroy all magic and trap cards when its summoned via its effect to boot! This seems to be the answer to the question of “Why aren’t the theme monsters as good as the IOC days?” Also in the set is the powerful new Blood Magician –Magician of Purgatory-. He’s a decent attacking monster, with the ability to spend spell counters, earned by either player playing a spell card, to destroy a monster with attack equal to 700 times the number of counters spent. Great for spell caster decks!
We also can’t forget the magic and trap cards of the set, for they are some of the best since LOB. We first take a look at two cards great for theme decks. Two cards, very much like Premature Burial, but one each for fusion monsters and ritual monsters respectfully. Ritual cards have not gotten much of a boost since Manju, and definitely can use this improvement. Also in the set is a powerful new card, which is definitely worthy of a restriction. I speak of course, of the commanding Lightning Vortex. For a single discard, this Normal Spell card destroys all of your opponent’s face up monsters. This card is sure to take full advantage of all the Night Assailant and Sinister Serpent users, and replace quite a few smashing grounds/Hammer shots/Fissures. Lastly, there’s a little reminder of the fact we’re still behind in Japanese cards. We have released here, the slightly familiar Death Destruction Virus of Magic. By sacking a 2000+ attack dark type monster, you then force your opponent for three turns to reveal all cards in his hand, that he draws, and cards on the field (including set monsters) and destroy any monster with 1500 attack or less. It may not be crush card, but with control monsters being as embraced as they are, it may be more all-purpose than crush card could ever be.
We can’t also forget about the running theme of the set. Beasts in general will be getting quite a huge boost from Flaming Eternity. With a total of 9 beasts/beast warriors, there is going to be a definite boost in the want for Manticore of Darkness. An animal version of Dream Clown even makes its way into the set. They also get a bit of low level support in the release of such cards like Rescue Cat, which allows you to sack it to special summon two level three or lower beast subtype monsters from your deck, which are then destroyed at the end of turn. Imagine fetching two DD crazy beasts against an Exodia player! Also comes a new troop dragon style card for beasts, known as hyena, which fetches itself when destroyed as a result of battle. Beasts will now have all the monsters they need for an effective control-style deck.
The effect this set will have on the Meta is immediately apparent from the powerful nature of the above mentioned cards. Remember though, there is still a whole other part of the set beyond those power cards I’ve mentioned just waiting to be combo-ed and played. The set theme may be that of beasts of all kind, but there will definitely be a load of cards used in this set used in every deck. This may be one of the best sets to be released in a long time, and I, as well as many others of you out there, am waiting en mass for the pre-release on the 26th and 27th of February. I’ll definitely be going for my cyber harpy, and my chance at getting a full set before its even officially out in America yet. I hope to see some of you there, and until then, keep dueling.
What about everyones favorite? The Rocks also get some help this time as well as those Earth decks. I will also get my CHL and the Haprie deck will begin to take shape. Have fun and enjoy every duel!!!! ;)
I think Gearfried the sword master and Gattling Dragon will cause tow new deck uproars. For those who dont know, Gearfried sword master is the new gearfried. YOu use remove restraints on gearfie the iron knight to summon it, and for every quip card you play on naked gearfried you can destroy a magic or trap on the field I beleive.
Gattling dragon, is the fusion for Barrel Dragon and Revolver Dragon, anyone who had both of those will love tihs card but should probably try to collect some Polymerizations and fusion gates before the set comes out.
Ive also looked at the artwork for this set and I must say that it is incredible. Some of the effects in the artwork are just outstanding, mainly the halographic foil cards. Alot of the Common cards still have the cartoonish humor art to them, but thats also great.
This wont be a bad set release at all, it should cause Manticore of Darkness to come back from peoples extra piles. Im curious if the Phoeniz will replace Vampire lord or not? Im doubting it because Zombie Decks can rush and Phoenix seems like it is going to be harder to get to the field but we'll all see now wont we?
I doubt pheonix will replace vampire lord, as the double sacking kills it.
Gearfreed the swordmaster was used by Joey against Rex Raptor in a recent episode. Having only a few cards in hand, he summons gearfreed and activates pot of greed, giving him the cards he needs. He activates "Release Restraints", which allows him to tribute a gearfreed the iron knight on the field to special summon Gearfreed the swordmaster from his deck. Gearfreed the swordmaster's ability kicked in when it became equipped, and allowed it to destroy a monster whenever it became equipped.
Also, Gattling dragon has quite an interesting effect. He allows its owner to flip a coin three times, and destroy a monster on the field for EACH heads flipped. This may bring summoner of illusions to the forefront!

Or since its an 8-star monster,Chaos-Meta decks would be getting a huge boost.Metaing a Chaos Soldier and bringing out that could mean there whole feilds gone instead of just one or two monsters. Then you could Premature Burial it,Call Of The Haunted it,Or Reincarnate it and special summon it again. Its pretty cool, nothing so good, but its another Meta compatable monster. And Summoner Of Illusions will never see play by the top players. You need to give up feild advantage. And you'd be relying on luck...trust me,its pretty horrible. There are better commons..
Gatling Dragon's main use is against Burners, where they can give you the Lava Golem, and you can Meta' it right into the Gatling Dragon.
I, for one, am a BIG fan of Majin Dragoon, which I believe to be one of the best cards in the set. Once this thing is on the field, nothin' really can stop it. It's also Meta'able from Fusilier Dragon.
I'm definately seeing that my low level clowns might be transforming into a low level beast deck... Rescue cat? it screams "last will".

Oh no... can't give us Crush Card(something good). Gotta give us this piece of crap. Yeah people use a lot of low attack monsters for control, but sacking a 2000+ attack monster to kill them? Might not be too bad if you didn't have to sack a 2000+ attack dark type, but that really sucks.
pfft. Screw that, I want Crush Card... (stupid kanomi/upperdeck... :()
Hey! Summoner of Illusions isn’t THAT bad. I run one in my deck since it gives a FREE Fiend Skull Dragon. Also, you’re not losing Field Advantage. OBVIOUSLY, you shouldn’t tribute your Horus The Black Flame Dragon Lv8 to summon Dark Fire Dragon. That would just be stupid. However, tributing an Archfiend Soldier (Archfiend, 1900, no effect) for Fiend Skull Dragon (Archfiend, 2000, 2 effects) is a much better idea.
IMT and Book of Moon make Summoner a slightly more skilled Magical Scientist. But it’s all up to the individual duelist’s preference.
I, myself, have Metamorphosis down packed. The 2 (and future 3) Soul Exchange will let me tribute my opponent’s BLS-Envoy to summon MY Gattling Dragon.
I’m very upset with this deck because it provides no direct support for Fiend decks, except for Brain Jacker and Shadow Slayer.
However, I feel bad for you guys. It seems DDVM is made for Fiend and Zombie decks, since we have a LOT of fiends with 2000 or more ATK who are easy to summon and Zombies have that freaking Call of the Mummy, so they can SS Ryu Kokki, tribute it for DDVM, Book of Life it and then normal summon a monster and go on with their turn as normal. The Fiend decks will now run Giant Orc like there’s no tomorrow.
I’m kind of looking forward to see if there will be more Exodia decks with the 4 card combo to draw 20 cards in this set (plus 2 cards from the old sets), if they look hard enough they’ll find it. The Dark Monarchs already know it.
Lightning Vortex might be a GREAT card for you “regular” duelists, but for us Fiend Duelists, who run Night Assailants, it’s B-R-O-K-E-N! And that’s not all; there are TONS of discarding effects in this set, which give Night Assailant players the ability to:
Tribute to the Doomed : Destroy a monster Monster Reincarnation : Return a monster back to your hand Raigeki Break : Destroy 1 Card on the field. Back to Square One : return a monster to the top of the owners Deck. Non-Aggression Area : Your opponent can’t summon or Special Summon next turn. Feathers of the Phoenix : Return ANY 1 CARD in the graveyard to the top of the deck Lightning Vortex : Destroy all face-up monsters on your opponent’s side of the field Explosive Wind Of the Phoenix Wing: Return a CARD on your opponent’s side of the field to the top of their deck. Coercive Safety Agreement : No Traps can be activated.
And while Sinister Serpent is YOU guys’ choice card for discarding, we fiend players will be using these effects for free.
So in the words of the great and wise Nelson Muntz:
