ok i'm asking this for a friend of mine.. So anyways here's what happened i was about 1200 lps and my friend was at 1700. He has an empress mantis on his side of the field and i activate ring of destruction on it. So then we both take damage, but then he says that i lose because the second sentence of the effect says that " inflict damage equal to the monsters attack to both you and you opponents lps" . Well I asked him why and he said that when the damage comes i take it first and then he takes it. So basically he's using the "you"(referring to me) part of the effect to say that i lose and he wins since when I'm out of life points, the effect of ring will be gone and he will win the duel. So can someone tell me if this is true or not?
The LPs are deducted at the same time, and since both player hit 0 LPS, it would be a tie. The reason is because you are both reaching 0 at the same time so to speak. It is not happenning at seperate points of a chain.

So what you are saying is.... the part of ring that says you and your oppent lp part, thats dumb. If anything he would llose, because its YOU reffering to the controller of ring lol but its dropped at the same time
I thought that if you had more life points than your opponent but both would go to zero, the person with the higher amount of life would win?
Ex: Opponent has 2000 life points, you have 2500. Opponent has BLS on the field and you ring it. I was always under the understanding that the player to reach 0 first lost. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

There is NO order of damage done with Ring of Destruction. It is considered done at the SAME time to both players.
If the card said "First, inflict damage to you and then inflict damage to your opponent," then it would work like that, but it says "you AND your opponent" which means "at the same time."
The same goes for Tremendous Fire. Your opponent takes 1000 LP damage while you take 500 LP damage so if your opponent is at 800 LP while you're at 450, then it would still be a tie.
Even if Ring said give damage first to yourself then the opponent, you could not end the game mid-card effect. The game CAN end between chains, but no in the middle of a card effect.(See Graceful Chairty Vs Exodia)
ROD though does not have this problem. The damage is done at the same time. Since the damage is done at the same time, both player's Lps drop at the same time, and should they hit 0, then they hit 0 at the same time, and a tie would ensue.
