“Excuse me; I see you’ve got a little bin of commons there, mind if I look through them?”
“You want to see my commons? What are you looking for? I don’t have anything good in there.”
“Skull Servants my lad, simply anything with this *points to binder* card on it.”
It’s something that has been a topic of many conversations among people at my tournament. Sort of a little craze I’ve started in my metagame, is the craze of collecting a whole bunch of your absolute favorite card. It definitely promotes generosity, as players will even give up a super rare if it means becoming a part of someone’s “hall of fame” collection. Why do players do this? Perhaps it’s the picture that they think is great artwork, or contains a symbol they like. Perhaps it’s a card they used, or are planning to use and simply fell in love with. Whatever the case, it’s an interesting craze that has a lot of commons bins missing some key cards.
Starting with me is a great place to begin. As you can see above, I’m a skull servant man. At first, my love of this little critter came purely out of the want to have what was the worst card in the game (or so I thought, Dancing Elf anyone?). Set after set, I’ve been proven wrong. A normal monster means an extra Heart of the Underdog draw, level one means it turns into Thousand Eyes Restrict after being Metamorphosis-ed, zombie means a good book of life material, and being a dark means its even fodder for Bacon Lettuce Soldier. This little critter has even found its way onto cards like Ante and Spirit Caller, which have also found their ways into my collection. The Lost Millennium even brings us the prestigious Skull Servant King, a new big baddy to make a zombie side deck a horror to face.

A good friend of mine saw how jubilant I was in receiving a rather lack luster card, and saw fit to collect his own small furry creature, KURIBOH! As he started collecting them more and more, he would preach to the masses why it was so good afterwards. Injection Fairy Lily this, and Bacon Lettuce that; he loved discarding Kuriboh just to get a laugh out of an opponent all ready to scoop his cards up in victory. Kuriboh coming out in Starter Deck Yugi~Evolution definitely made his collecting go a little easier. The Lost Millennium even gives him a new chance with Yuuki’s Hane Kuriboh.

Some of us, usually the ones with full time jobs, a house in our name, and no morals when it comes to trading, want to collect something with gold letters. Most of us who remember Yu-Gi-Oh! back in the early days remember the times when people would go and purchase a pack of Metal Raiders. You would look at them, and see their faces light up in the joy not paralleled by anything short of the birth of a child. They would hold the card aloft and declare they had just pulled a Mirror Force. After its banning October first though, the value of Mirror Force went from Porsche to Pinto overnight. Another friend of mine saw fit to collect in its down time, and is now one of only 5 people in my meta to even own a Mirror Force. He isn’t being stingy, he’s willing to trade them back for Bacon Lettuce, Lightning Vortex, AND something else. You could also purchase them for the low-low price of 50 dollars. The moral of this story? Always keep one copy of each forbidden card, because you defiantly never know what’s coming off and what’s staying on.

I don’t blame any of you that don’t get the concept, as its not meaningful in the least to anyone who doesn’t “passion collect”. My Skull Servants are dear to me, and have become a symbol of my passion for the game. I may not use the best cards, but never ever let me get the rest of it out. With plenty of Skull Servants under my belt, and a new spiffy effect monster on the way, I’m sure to be in the collecting business for long after my eventual retirement.
[color=green]Nice Article. Im attempting to collect as much Reflect Bounders as I can get. Im also one of the few who pulled a Mirror Force from a pack of MRD. I was a newb that time. I sold my 1/e Mirror Force for 20 dollars:p
I have collected every english cardthat features him. I also havbe collected everyversion of him except one. I have Marauders in first edition american, unlimited, JPN structure decks Joey 2 and one for the orginal JPN sets (My first Japanese Card). All i am lacking is a rare Joey Structure deck 1 marauder.
There are other ways to colelct cards. For example, I am trying to collect two versions of every DarkMagician type card: The full body versions and the bust versions. So far, I have Dark Magician in both forms, Dark magician girl in both forms (including the rare super sexy version without hearts), The red Dark magician (wish they'd do a full body for him), the dark Paladin (all three versions, including the rare full body paladin only in Japan) and the Dark Magician of Chaos (lacking his ritual form)
My favorite card to collect muliples of is Injection Fairy Lily. I have five now (four Unlimited and one 1st Edition), and I've been working on getting a Japanese one. I know she's reprinted in Dark Beginnings 2, so I'll be getting that one as well.

FYI, Marauding Captain wasn't in the first Joey Structure.
Also add to your list:
DL5 (Duelist Legacy Volume 5, Japanese) (don't know rarity)
BE2-JP Rare
DB2-EN Rare (soon to be released, probably around May or June)
Trade me your Waboku's (the only card that people should use three copies of in every deck...just kidding...sort of). Also, on April first I begin my collection of my second favorite card, D. D. Warrior Lady.
Hmm favirote cards, I remember starting this with Saggi the dark clown and then i stopped after i got six because he was no longer my favirote. Now I must say the three cards ill always colelct are Kuribohs, Bistro butchers, and anything that really looks cute. I remember asking my friend to trade his GigoByte card and he laughed and gave it to me, I also received a time wizard that way, but the cute mosnters are so collectable.
Hane Kuriboh i will love to have out, and Kuriboh really is the ultimate monster. You discard it when your oppoent thinks they have a win and you block it, they laugh and use their next mosnter to attack but surprise surprise you have another kuriboh in your hand! (ive personally done this) Thats when they grunt and tell you to go. Kurbioh is a lvl 1 mosnter so all the level one decks would have been great for him like enchanted fitting room or dark sword of the soul eater. If you saw the movie then I think everyone loved the part where Kuriboh grew nasty little fangs and attacked little Yugi Moto lol, its all around a great monster. For Bistro Butcher, well he's cool, the first goblin monster in the game, he allows the opponent to draw cards if he does damage and its not untill just recently that people realized hoe great that effect can be. Say you want a deck out deck, take a bistro, play robbin zombie and robbin goblin and there ya go the oppoent draws two cards, discard a card and removes one from the top of the deck, thats thre cards from the deck and one from the hand. I remeber another 1800 monster everyone hated and that was Dark Zebra, who remembers dark Zebra? I loved that card and yet everyone acted like it was the worst monster ever.
Mystic Elf is MY child and YOU are not taking her away from meyyy!
Yes, I like her so mucho, I started collecting her even from the age of fake cards... (long ago) and now I got 12 copies all from starter decks and a feb from begginers edition. Also, I had a friend who colected 20 copies of Dancing Fairies.
I also have 10 copies of Enchanting mermaid (800LP each stand by - water monster). Both english and jap version.
These girlss..... of course the Mystic Elf rare it´s on my fairy-type deck.
The artwork and the opponent faces when they crash into one is PRICELESS!
