And BLS brought the duelist to the mountaintop and proclaimed, “All that you see, Shonen Jump, Regionals, Nationals, Worlds! All that I ask of you is that you serve me by using me in every duel, every deck, and every victory from now until you die or I am banned.” -Pharaoh Atem 12:27
Just kidding; but comedy aside, I think everyone who plays Yu-gi-oh out there
knows what I mean.
Most duelists out there have in fact sold their souls as well as “the heart of the
cards” and the price was cheap.
I speak of course to all of you out there relying solely on BLS to win the duel for
you and as a win condition for your deck.
What’s a ‘win condition’?
It is literally, the way your deck wins.
If you run an Exodia deck, your win condition is getting all five pieces in your hand.
If you run a Beatdown deck, your win condition is attacking your opponent’s life
points or overpowering their field.
If you run Burn, your win condition is effect damage to your opponent.
If you run any kind of Chaos, your win condition is getting a chaos monster to the
field and keeping it there.
The title speaks to what I have observed more and more while dueling lately.
Most duelists out there rely way too heavily on BLS to win duels for them.
I’ve seen it first hand. For example, I attended the past week’s Shonen Jump
Championship in New Jersey.
It was like a chaos pride parade.
I observed hundreds of otherwise good, if not great, players all of whom were
using the same strategy to win.
“Oh here we go again!”
“Stop hating on BLS!”
“He’s one of the best cards in the game, why not use him?”
I don’t disagree with any of these arguments however I do disagree with the
helplessness I see in my opponents eyes when he doesn’t draw BLS just in time
to finish me off.
This to me is disgusting to watch and saddens me deeply. Only now do I begin to
see why people refer to the card as a golden crutch. One after the other of my
opponents used the same card to best me in almost every duel.
After a while, I began preaching to them that there were other ways to win even
in their current Chaos decks. I pleaded with more than one opponent to not do
me the dishonor of using a ‘wheelchair’ to run my over when they had two
fully ‘functioning legs’ to kick my butt with in a duel. My pleas for the most part fell
on deaf ears. I only hope that at least a few got what I was trying to tell them.
This disturbing trend I discovered has prompted me to reconsider my dueling in
major events. For those of you out there who know me, you can appreciate how
bad it must be for me to even entertain the idea of cutting back on dueling.
As most of you know from my last article, almost everyone I know knows I play yu-
gi-oh and enjoy (almost) every minute of it. Some of my friends I have now I
would have never met were it not for the game. Unfortunately, local tournaments
and fun games amongst friends it would seem are the only way to observe any
semblance of originality or challenge anymore. At larger events, it seems
everyone is either too programmed or too afraid to not run BLS.
I here ya Morpheus, Ive been to a tournement were I was surround by BLS Envoys. In the first round I was creamed by a deck that ran BLS even when the thing didn't fit into it in my opinion but I can say that thorn of the card didn't make it to the field. My ol' Harpie Ladies still have alot of fight in them and if they can take down this powerhouse I know they can do anything with a few extra mods.
But its kind of heartless relying on just one card to win you a duel and seeing a person with a BLS getting destroyed and there sad faces make me kind of happy to know that BLS Envoy isn't indestructable like some chaos players depict it to be.
Now people should trust in there decks and themselves to make a victory happen not just one single card.
"And the duelist said to the Lord, "Destroy the wicked BLS and return the game." And the Lord said, "But wait a minute, you use BLS in yoru deck!" And the duelist said, "Well, I want originality, but not in my deck!"
-The book of Chaos, 5:12-5:15
That's all I'm going to say about the hate of BLS.
oh, and one more quote AJ:
"And the Lord did tell the duelists of the realms not to try spoofing again, for that was the work of the angel Mr. Chaos."
This is a really great article! You are totally right and I say that even if I run Bls in my deck but in no way is it a crutch. I mostly win with out Bls and I really try to use him in case of real trouble if not it stays in my hand because the rest of my deck has enough potential to beat my opponent. I think he should be banished not cause he is that powerful(mine never stays more than 1 or 2 turns on the field)but because it makes the whole game gravitate around him making yu gi oh less original in big events. Since I play in a small meta I see very few chaos decks because they are expensive and I see lots of very original decks with a lot of potential. So in my opinion everyone should stop thinking chaos chaos chaos because if everybody would have an original deck all the game would stay competetive and there would be a lot more diversity.
Nice job, sure i run BLS but hes my last resort, most of the time i win my game with the rest of my monsters. I really try not to use BLS as my winning condition and it is pretty sad people resort to 1 card to win. But i guess its better than living with all the cards on the ban list

I used him when He first came out. I didn’t like how I felt using him. I felt guilty and cheap, so he has a permanent place in my Binder. My Two top decks can win without BLS, a fact I am quite proud of.
*raining lightly against the overhang above my house*
I'm sorry you feel this way, and/or are now realizing that this is how the game is, and its horrendousness in its full entirety.
Originality in deck ideas, self-respect for being a follower rather than a leader of sorts, is growing smaller and more minute' as we speak. I dont care what anyone says, BLS is nothing more then the dark side.
We may never see our day of reckoning for a long time. We could be bluffed, and suffer another 6 months, or longer, of BLS in October.
AJ, it is indeed a sad day for yugioh.
No, its been a bad day for yugioh, about all year long...
Agentmage, 2005 does suck, for yugioh that is. ~_^
I can understand the reasons behind your article and it's not like I don't agree with anything you mentioned on there but all these threads on how BLS is bad or how BLS is only used in yu-gi-oh decks these days or even the widely popular "BLS should be banned" thread has been getting real repetitive. I rather see threads of unique original decks, cool combos, awesome Yu-gi-oh stories and even interesting Card-of-the-Day threads where you can list combos people wouldn't even realize till thy see it. All I'm simply asking is please, please, please people stop making threads about BLS-Envoy.
my deck style is warrior i could get a BLS but i don't even though it would fit in my deck, it feels cheap to win with it. My win condition is to swarm control the field power up and attack directly. I say BLS has had it's time and to promote originality banned for a period of time. but who knows maybe chaos sorceror will become a totally broken monster? :ermm:
Great Article. I'm like bigred. I still love its removal ability but felt very guilty using him after a while. He's found a permanent spot in my play-testing decks I versus and never my decks that I take anyone more.
The "corruption of the Soldier" runs deep in alot of duelists. True Chaos is an evil thing. Like Television, Yugioh has made the bad look good. Against my better judgement I side deck him in a deck I took to one last regionals in my area. But this act actually completely proved to me that Soldier wasn't nesscary. I never main deck him or his buddies and took 15th; just missing out on top 8. And lost in a situation where BLS couldn't have done anything. And I didn't lose to a BLS. AMAZING!
I think these are the kind of situations some duelist need to experience in order to break from the BLS crutch. Other people can say whatever and give the best, most reasonable explainations why you don't need BLS. But some people will never know until they experience it first hand. Some can't completely break away until they experience this first hand.
Vince120 & SuperRonnieGuy: If your decks can win without BLS then why main deck it? Figure out what wins it for your deck and push it even further. This is kind of the point Morpheus was making. Either BLS is the win condition or he's the crutch for just in case you slip up. You guys are so close! You are at the door and just need to open it! Open the door and enter a world where BLS is not needed in a deck to win! But watch your step because you could fall into the Tsuku/Restrict thingy.
It is sad to see so many Soldiers out today and losing the same way over and over again can really suck. Especially if its to 6-8 different people! But the satisfaction of beating a Soldier deck or hitting a BLS with a Discard effect can be very satisfying. But then the whole "seeing the sad face of a BLS user" thing that Morpheus mention can be disheartening too.
I guess at times like these Morpheus, you gotta be a bit evil and not care and just move on. Sometimes, cliche as it may be, your actions can speak louder then your words. If you lose to BLS and say something, it sounds like your just complaining. If you beat BLS and say something, you indirectly belittle the player and they will most likely ignore you. Saying nothing expect "Good Game" can be all you need to say to one who is leaning on the "Golden Crutch" (nice one). But his pic is pretty and shiny. And its gold. ooooo.
