if i activate staunch defender and my opponent have face-up monsters in defense position, are they automactically changed into attaack position?
also if i activate staunch defender and say i target my marauding captain and my opponent's bls-eotb attacks it. would it be sent to the graveyard after all my opponent's monsters attack? or would it be destroyed during damage calculation when bls-eotb attacks?
1.) I don't think the monsters switch to attack mode, I think they just attack while in defense position(such as Total defense shogun)
2.) Just like any attack, your captain would die after the first attack. Also, the ruling states that if your monster dies after Staunch Defender resolves, your opponent can no longer attack for the rest of the turn.
1.) Well, if the monsters ARE attacking while in defense position(mind you, I'm not totally positive that this is the case, but I can't find any information that would tell me otherwise), I wouls assume they would still die because they are still atk vs atk(extrapolated from ruling on total defense shogun)
2.) As for gravity bind being on the field, I think that the level 4 and higher monsters would then not be able to attack(similar to how beserk gorilla MUST attack every turn, yet he is ruled that cards such as swords can prevent him from doing so)
I believe that the monsters would switch to attack position. If G-Bind is on the field, they would change to attack, but they wouldnt attack. And if the monster is weaker then the selected monster, they will be destroyed.
At one time on the old Yahoo Judge's Site it was ruled that if an attacking
player had Ojama tokens on his side of the field and attacked with another
monster....and defending player activated Staunch Defender....that the Ojama
tokens would be forced into attack postion along with all other face up defense
postion monsters. I've heard debate on this topic a number of times as of late.
Can we get a more up to date clarification?
Answer:
Current ruling:
"Staunch Defender" does not force Defense Position monster into Attack Position.

So I was right on the not switching to attack mode part anyway.. so I'm curious, where exactly do you find those answered questions like that? If I knew WHERE that was, I might be able to actually look them up. I was using was RONIN and it had nothing pertaining to the question.
It's always good to look up the answers to questions before posting, but sometimes, it's appropriate to just read the card and make accurate rulings based on the card text. Cards like Final Attack Orders and Stumbling force specific monster positions, but Staunch Defender says no such thing. So it can be interpreted that there is no position the monsters have to be forced into. As for the Gravity Bind question, it was suggested on another thread that the yugioh official web site won't repeat similar explantions of different cards, so the Staunch Defender/G Bind combo will have a similar explanation for the Beserk Gorilla/G Bind combo. You can look up Beserk Gorilla for the answer to the second Stuanch Defender question, and while you're at it, look up the answer to the first.
