Welcome, because I felt like making a mini-article, to a random post from the idea my new deck gave me.
In a meta ruled by removal and hand advantage, there is little room for error. A card immune to other cards is always a treat, which is why Jinzo and Horus are still popular today, but what about a card that is immune to several differant types at once? Pure maddness!
I decided to unsleave my decks and clean out my bidner recently and start fresh. I then, made a deck that I hadn't at least in a year, and spruced it up with the new-er cards and cards to rough out against the current enviroment. I sorted out my regular rares untill I came to the little gem that inspired this mini-article: Ancient Gear Beast. Starting from the top, being Earth and Machine gives him a marvelous boost when it comes to considdering him for main decking. His synnergy with the rest of his "ancient gear" buddies will be a great selling point as well once SOI is released, but what can he offer us untill then?
With 2000 attack, the only rough spots he gets into is against another sac monster on most occasions, but this is fine. Ancient Gear Beast is more ment as the bane of effects. His built in Ha-Des ability allows him to lick clean the bones of the Assailants he trounces, and assert his athority on any tomatos he happens to make ketchup out of. Sure, he still struggles with spirit reaper like any mosnter that doesnt attack through defense, but most of the mosnters we all run dont have that ability anyway. Also, the secondary ability is what sold me on at least testing the deck out today. While Ancient Gear Beast attacks, like his bigger brother, no Magic or Trap cards may be activated untill the end of the damage step. This means any time he attacks, he will attack till completion and without any worries. No Assailants, no sakaretsu, no scapegoat. No other monster in the game has this level of invulnerability.
Yes yes I know, the card has its weaknesses. Being a one sacrafice monster, it means that if he doesn't make a differance, its dead weight. Staring down anything Cyber Dragon or Bigger will have you praying you have a Limiter Removal, and it has no immunity outside the battle phase. It can still be smashed, snatched, brained, and exiled away just like 80% of the monsters out there. offensively, this card is everything a duelist could ask for. Defensively, its a 2000 attacker and thats about it. Whether do use it in a deck or loose it in a pile of commons, is the choice you all as duelists must make.
I agree with you, I happen 2 love this guy a lot and have included 2 copies in my brother's Roid Deck for playtesting. I just hate the fact that he,well,looks like a Beast =.= I wish they would have made him look like a smaller Gear Golem
i've play tested the gear beast before and have had some fun with him. he and his bigger brother will be even better once the ancient gear castle? magic card comes out in the new set. this will make him easier to summon and the 300 attack boost won't hurt either.
the only problem i have is that this big guy is immune to sak armor and that's about it. this is not to mention that he can also get trap or bottomless trap holed. if the opponent has a quick play spell such as enemy con or book they can activate it at the beginning of the battle phase, and widespread ruin can take him out if he is your biggest monster when another monster attacks, on a side note most people don't realize that they can activate widespread when the monster without the largest attack attacks.
Yeah, Antique Gear Castle will be ok...I just hate how it has the jank anime effect though...

Increase the ATK strength of all face-up monsters on the field with "Antique Gear" in its name by 300. Whenever a monster is successfully Normal Summoned, place a counter on this card. Whenever a monster with "Antique Gear" in its name is to be Tribute Summoned, if the number of counters on this card is greater than or equal to the number of monsters needed to be tributed, you may tribute this card instead.

...so it doesn't continuously stay on the field...though that's where you can use stuff like Hidden Book of Spell to get them back and such.
I actualy had skipped over gear castle in my first reading of SOI, but now I'm all about it. Mayhap I'd make an ancient gear deck when I leave the pre-release? Such an evil idea!
