im debating
Granmarg can take out monsters and traps
zaborg MUST kill something, but can kill face up monsters too
so who do you think is worth it more?
As with most targeting effects that have specific conditions, if the targeted card is flipped face-up in a chain (for example, if it is a monster and “Ceasefire” is activated, or if it is a Trap Card and is chained to the effect of “Granmarg the Rock Monarch”), then the effect of “Granmarg the Rock Monarch” disappears.
The effect of “Granmarg the Rock Monarch” is an effect that targets. You select the targets when you activate the effect.
ZABORG THE THUNDER MONARCH
You have to destroy 1 monster. If there are no other monsters then you have to destroy "Zaborg the Thunder Monarch".
"Zaborg the Thunder Monarch"'s effect targets.
If you target "Chaos Command Magician" with "Zaborg the Thunder Monarch"'s effect, the effect is negated.
If you Tribute Set "Zaborg the Thunder Monarch" face-down the effect is not activated.
For the first Granmarg ruling alone I'd give the edge to Zaborg.
Granmarg is a very underrated monster. I believe it is the most versatile of all of the monarchs, since it is able to destroy monsters or spells/traps. As for the point stated above, even if they chain the trap to Granmargs effect, Grandmarg still did its job by getting rid of the trap. The only exception is if the trap is continuous, and continuous traps are not played that often outside of burn/stall.
Also, most of time the monsters you want to destroy are the face down monsters. I have found that when using Zaborg, the majority of the time it is destroying face down monsters. Grandmarg does this too, but with the added bonus of letting you choose to destroy the monster or go after a set spell/trap.
And, unlike Zaborg, Grandmarg does not have to kill itself if it is the only card on the field when it is summoned.
So, overall both monsters are good, but Grandmarg is more versatile. If you have the room in your deck I would suggest running one of each.
Granmarg's effect can be wasted if the card you targeted is flipped face-up. That's why you usually should go fo the back cards. But with that being said, you'd mostly use the effect to destroy f/d monsters but Zaborg does the same thing but the monsters can be face-up as well. Zaborg weakness is that if he's the only monster when summoned, he's forced to destroy himself. All Monarchs have strengths and weakness like their 1000 DEF which gets beat by Tsukyomi. In the end, I'd go with Zaborg because he can actually net you a +1, while Granmarg can be a 0 or +1.
Nobody in their right mind would Tribute Summon Zaborg if only they have monsters on the field and the opponent does not.
Granmarg is primarily better against face-down monsters, but these days, most face-down m/t's being used are not chainable either (Sakuretsu Armor, Mirror Force, etc), so it is somewhat good against those as well.
In a Monarch Deck, however, both of them are pretty good.
yeah, Granmarg's effect can be "wasted" if it hits a chainable s/t card, but really, whenever you force your opponent to activate something at a different time than they want to, you gain some advantage. maybe not in the numeric sense of "+1", but its still an advantage. I think his versatility warrants being tested. ultimately, it'll come down to individual scenarios. If you're running two zaborg, i'd definately drop one for a granmarg and test it. same if you're running two granmarg, drop one for a zaborg, and give it a try.
the other thing you can do while playtesting is to put a "dummy card" in its place (maybe a card facing backwards), and allow it to be considered both granmarg and zaborg while in the hand. then, keep track of how many times you play it as a granmarg, and how many times you play it as zaborg. see which one is more useful to you that way. just make sure your playtest opponent is ok with you doing this before you try it :)
i haven't playtested my granmarg, but i'm going to. I'll let you know how it does once i do.
Zaborg definately cuts out most of the crud the other monarchs cant deal with. Especialy now, that everyone seems to have found the last Chaos Crutch, Zaborg's light atribute will win him out over Grandmarg.
to add to what agent said, i think that zaborg's versatility lies is in a couple of facts:
1. it's light, yeah for chaos.
2. it's effect gets rid of anything that a monarch would have trouble with. (as already stated by agent)
so, having said this, zaborg definitely has the edge over granmarg. however, with mirror force back, granmarg does get a slight boost. just my 2 cents...
I would choose Zaborg because of the increase use of spirit reapers
Not much of a reason since, from my experience, Reaper's are usually Set face-down anyways for a Defensive Wall unless there's a clear open shot at the opponent's Life Points.
