well heres the scenario
my opponent summon a skilled dark and he clears my monster off with a ligthin vortex and a nobleman of cross out so i have 7 monster in the grave and he decides to attack direct can i in responce to his attack activate skull lair and remove 4 monsters in the grave to destroy the skilled and prevent him from attacking me?
Not really...I just heard 2 different rulings on it before...some said it had to already be face-up on the field while others said it could be used immediately and the sense that I got was that Continuous Traps, to get their effects, you have to already have them face-up on the field, resolved successfully. So had me tugging back and forth.
I'd probably say that it could be used when it's first activated...of course, like all Continuous Traps, if something were to chain to its own activation that could destroy it, then the effect would disappear since it'd no longer be face-up on the field.
You cannot use it immediately upon activation as it has to be face-up and active on the field before you trigger it.
In the scenario, it is possible to use its effect because you are allowed multiple chains in the Battle Phase. You can activate it, allow it to resolve, then activate its removal effect.

Sorry to revive a near dead thread. But I need this to be clarified.
Just to make sure I am getting this correctly, I think you guys are saying I cannot use Skull Lair's effect immediatly upon activiation? So I would have to activate it and then wait til the next turn for it to be used?

You have more than one activation taking place. The action of flipping it face-up is considered the "Card Activation". Since the effect itself is Continuous, you cannot use it until the entire card has resolved in the initial Chain.
The second activation is "Effect or Cost Activation". This is where you may actually use the effect of the now resolved Trap Card.
So, in simple terms, you cannot flip face-up (card activation) a Continuous Trap Card, and use its effect (effect or cost activation) in the same chain.
Well it seems to me that Skull Lair's effect can only be used on your turn after its activated if I'm thinking about this correctly, its kinda like Tribe Infection Virus if this can be a somewhat proper comparison, as long as you have the resources for it you can uses it's effect over and over, but you could only activate it on your turn. I hope I'm assuming correctly, these kind of effects confuse me aswell >_<.

Um nope, you can activate it during either turn, what woo0 was explaining that the "activation of the CARD" and the "activation of the EFFECT" are two separate things, so you can activate the CARD and until the chain has fully resolved THEN you can activate the EFFECT.
Wow, now thats a nice effect, I was thinking you could only use Skull Lair on your turn, ^_^*, well I guess I've learned something new today, thanks deck_wraith. I'm suprised this card even confused HalfD, lol.
