One sport I never got was High School Wrestling. People would get all excited because my High School had a really good wrestling team that went to state every year, and all I did was shrug. I mean, it just seemed so weird. Two guys, in tight little outfits…need I go on?
*High School Wrestlers can send their angry PMs to Mr. Chaos…*
But more then that, my main problem with it is that it is so boring. It's grab, hold, grab, hold, pin. Nothing really showy like Basketball. Nothing really surprising like Football. And no spitting like in Baseball.
While I might be a smart man, I still get into Pro Wrestling. Nothing beats watching two guys beat each other with chairs until someone uses a fake blood pack to make it look like they are bleeding. (If you thought that they really did bleed, then you have my pity) It has everything amateur wrestling doesn’t: excitement, wild characters, cool set ups, costumes…
And it was thinking about this that I realized what is missing from amateur wrestling is missing from this game also. I mean, when I first saw the anime, I saw these strange decks with interesting duelists going at it in strange situations. But, go to a tournament, and you get a bunch of teens all trying to summon Chimeratech while whining to their friend about how they hate the card and it will kill the game (Whinus majorus, anyone?)
It’s boring.
That’s why I think Yu-Gi-Oh should take a cue from the WWE and incorporate some new gimmicks to help make tournaments and such a bit more exciting.
Costumes and character- One of my complaints about this game is that no one bothers to make themselves different. Most of the time, everyone wears the same clothing (jeans, shirt, maybe a jacket) to a tournament, which alone makes dueling just a bit duller. I mean, come on, even Yugi wore a studded collar, and Yugi makes the Olsen Twins look like thug rappers.
I think more duelists should get into wearing special dueling outfits; clothing that is just for wearing to make a statement when you duel. Wouldn’t it be a bit more interesting is a Beast Deck Duelist wore a safari outfit? Or what about a machine deck user dressed in overhauls? A Dino Duelist could dress like Alan Grant. An E-Hero Duelist would wear a cape. A plant duelist…ok, so there are no plant duelists. But still, you get the idea!
Personally, I am working on my own special outfit for dueling. Since I most of the time use my Shift to Darkness Vampire deck, I am working on my own version of William the Bloody’s outfit: Black duster, dark jeans, red dress shirt. Not an extreme like I talked above, but still, when I come whooshing in with my leather coat in the breeze, that is sure to turn some heads.
And, why are there so few characters in this game? You’d think there would be more duelists getting into the game, creating personas for themselves when they duel in order to throw off their opponents. It isn’t like we don’t do it already. I mean, on the Realms, we already invent personas for ourselves. I have created the persona of Mr. Chaos, the snarky writing king. I’m sure many others on this board have done the same thing. So, why not take it one step further? Why not adopt an Australian accent when you use Des Wombat? Or quote the Bible every time you play an angel?
“I just pwned your behind.” -Yugi 3:16
Once we have character in place, we can move on to helping get the characters more attitude.
Entrance Music- Another thing I think that would make dueling most interesting, especially at the national level, would be for duelists to get their own entrance music. I mean, now, you have two duelists enter, shake hands and duel. No excitement, no grand appearance, just wham, bam, let’s duel madam.
Boring! Screw sportsmanship, I want “American Badass” by Kid Rock playing when I enter a duel, with a big video screen showing my greatest wins.
Dueling Teams could work together to come up with official theme music that plays whenever one of them duels. People could hire local bands to create original music for them. And the look on the Asian Players’ faces when an American Duelist comes to a duel with a song featuring Lil’ Jon screaming “YEEEEEAAAAHHHH!” in the background. I want to see my opponent come storming into the dueling area, rock music blaring as they make their way to the challenge.
And where would the challenge be?
Exotic Locations- On the show, duels can take place anywhere. The street, on top of buildings and castles…where do duels take place here?
In crowded card shops.
Wow. *Eye roll*
I have wondered for a long time why no one has gone about finding exciting locations to stage tournaments. I mean, I can already think of tons of places that would be great to have duels ,and have special stipulations to boot. What about a Cage Match: Loser stays in the cage for the rest of the tournament? Or a back alley match, televised for everyone else to watch in the arena, with rats and other vermin crawling around? A duel at midnight in a cemetery, with the judge dressed as the Grim Reaper. Now THAT would be interesting.
Prizes- When you win a tournament now, you might get a trophy and a special card. Now, this might seem ok, but in my world where we have made dueling a bit more wild, we need new prizes to go along with the new look. Now, I’m not going to suggest that we give the winners giant glittery belts that go with absolutely nothing you can win. No, maybe just big glittery belts that at least go with a nice jacket and some loafers would be good. You know, with enough diamonds that if you sold the belt, you could feed a family of 4 in Uruguay. Because, if we aren’t awarding obscene prizes to people, well then, I just don’t think we are doing enough to make this game great!
I want to hear what you think. What do you think could be done to make a bigger spectacle out of dueling in general? Fans with signs? Guest Judges? Duel Side announcers? What do you think?
If you smell….what Mr. Chaos….is cooking.
It’s tater tots, by the way. That is what I am cooking.
They do really bleed in pro wrestling..... They cut themselves with a small razor really quick and of camera sight. Sometimes they arent quick enough though. I have a few matches showing this.
Also are you a fan of "ant" from last comic standing. He did a lot of sport's with "gay" overtones bit's. My favorite was boxin.
2 men topless in silk shorts fighting for a belt and a purse......
Besides that, really well written article. Nice read.
Could be a fun idea. I'm a big undead fan myself I could probably walk into my local shop dressed in a black trench coat looking like a ghoul with "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" playing. They'd think me insane but thats probably what they think of me anyway.
Thansk for the idea Mr. Chaos and keep these great articles coming. I always enjoy a good read and your work is always good.
hehe I run a fiend so I guess I could have long black hair with all black clothes and a Slipknot shirt whenI duel :p.
But this article is very different from others I have read. I never really thought about stuff like this. Then again I suppose all the little kids already do stuff like this by quoting characters or yell things "I summon you, Blue Eyes White Dragon!". But anyways, I can see the dueling outfit thing working out. I sort of have something like that, I always wear a certain shirt and pants whenever I go to a tourny but I guess its not the same thing. The location point you mentioned sounds like an even better idea, even though its the least likely to happen (unless of course we we're using duel disks ;)). But oh man what I would do for a musical entrance. Maybe we could get the store owners to put music on during the tournament or something. Not a bad article I guess.
i think that 1 thing that ude could and should do is come up with a team dueling format and rules for 2 on 2 duels.
me and my friends do this all the time. they use it in the show, so why no go and expand the games horizons and come up with rulings for team duels and a format to go with it...whether its 1 set of lp's for both players to share, or seprate lp's for both players so a team could gang up on someone on the other team, as long as they oficially do something like that i think it could and would truly expand the game!!!
Kinda lame if you ask me. People are already going to Shonen Jumps in Naruto Headbands, and they aren't playing any kind of Ninja deck.
Don't get me wrong, I disagree with those who say even theme songs for decks they create are stupid, but some of those ideas are a little over the top. But hey, if I see you all at an even in some costume, fine. To each his own. It might even be funny, in a stupid kind of way.
1st- Why cant we have money prizes that most of the other card games do like V.S. I mean yea our game may be intended for kids but come on UDE could still afford to give cash prizes at least to the people at Worlds. I mean UDE is making alot of money off of us players, well at least in one group sum.
2nd- I would love to have some type of music be playing. I would vote for Halo Soundtrack music all the way. Well maybe some of the songs at least.
3rd- Hmm... the dressing up maybe. I dont know. I know I wear my Full Metal Alchamist Shirts everytime I go to a regional but I guess that wouldnt count huh. That is about as far as I would go on that. Maybe if I could find a real cool looking Yugioh Shirt then I may even wear that.
4th- Exotic Locations would be a nice thing to do. I wouldnt go as far as the back of an alley but it would be cool to maybe hold the worlds tournament like in a castle or something like that. That would be neat.
Anyway, I still enjoyed the article and keep up the crazy work you cook up. Oh my bad that was still just the tater tots. J/K!:p
I've always thought they should hold a toureny at my college, good ol' UM Flint. We have skywalks all over that would make forrealylcooldueling places.
Odd- Who said the image was a bad thing? (chuckles)
Very intresting read if I do say so myself. Before my card shop closed down it's tournaments I actually did wear a long coat and a misfit's bracelet that had the skulls on it, and some spikes, sometimes I'd just wear my leather jacket though it really depended on the weather.
Anyway my main point is one time someone came up to me and said "are you using a Zombie deck?" and I said "Thats a secret" when we dueled much to there surpise I was playing A Legendary Ocean and Mermaid Knights, however later I did play a Zombie deck before I went on my lets say hiatus which I'm still kind of on.
Yeah Chaos it would be more fun if people got into this, if it was more like the show and people got behind their deck and getting into a character. My main problem with this though is we'd well see alot of the same "character" if people actually did it. I mean you like vampires, I like vampires, I'm sure some other people do how many vampire "characters" will there be?
Still a pretty cool idea none the less an well hey I rather see three vampire people than five hundred cookie cutter chaos/stien/whatever they're doing these days.
