I have to laugh, as an afterthought, local tournament frustration.
Ok so on thursdays my friends and I all play in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournament because well, its a fun time for us to get together. Most of us play VS. competitively and Yu-Gi-Oh! casually, but our store gets giant amounts of people for a hobby league, almost always at least 30 people, and maybe half of them are pretty good. At the tournament I win a fair amount of the time.
But lately, I have this thing of when I'm paired down I lose.
So last week I was 3-0 going into the last round of swiss. I got paired down against a player that honestly, had never beaten me before. I watched him get the blow out cookie hand, even though he was running macro cosmos. He ruined my board as I drew Tomato Tomato Sangan Treeborn in my opening hand. I say ok, thats what a sidedeck is for and game 2 I make quick work of him. Game 3 I have him down to 150 lifepoints, I sided ceasefire since I knew he had return, but I never drew the card to finish him. So I go for kill swing he flips macro and returns 2 d.d. survivors in attack mode. I pass my attack. After this i have so many outs to kill him but I dont draw them. I waste TT, Mirror Force, etc just to stay alive... and I eventually die without drawing any outs.
So I go 3-1, my tiebreakers horrible, and get 1 pack for the night.
So today, I am just chatting VS. with my friends, talking about how my friend Steve Silverman won the 10k at Columbus and how he is a lucksack as well as chatting about the WoW TCG and Celebration and stuff. My one friend (you know him on here as Morpheus1981) decides to judge. So my first round game is against 2 time 10k winner Steve. I decide that his new nickname is "two-time" because it has so many possible meanings, and its starting to stick. Well anyway we are running similar cookie decks to win store credit, but he has an infatuation with things that kill at instant speed, so he runs ALOT of traps. I win the first game because I finally drew Zaborg. (YuGiOh is like that you know) The second game I went second and even though he swears up and down that Conf is horrible, I still play it, and I Graceful Conf him, and draw into MST and MoF. Thats how I roll. So I obviously win that game. My second game is against another one of my friends. Now I'd say every week I get paired against good people every round. I think the TO repairs until he sees I got a hard game the first couple rounds, I swear. So we start and my opening hand sucks I got everything for stein except for the special summon of a cyber dragon (I run three of course) so I mst noc stien for twin and push 6300. I set Book, and end. He mysticals I chain book to stein as to not lose, then brain controls for the win. What a beat, but I end up winning the next two games. So onto round 3 and here it comes, the random paired down. It was against this guy who really honestly, doesnt smell too good.
He's an older gentleman who carries his cards around in a deck tin. Well the first game I had that little problem with a thing called monsters. Yeah, I didnt have any? So I stave off death a couple times with sakus, but the common GAFs keep coming at me. I actually get control of the game, at which time he has 1 card prematures a GAF summons Cybernetic Cyclopean, books my DDA and attacks my FD, then throws down rush recklessly to push through enough damage . I mean threw it down to the point where it went almost off the table and it span in the cover... Did I mention this guy has never beaten me? So the second game I smokescreen and only side in one mobius for the fact that there were always so many set cards. The second game i found out why- Cybernetic Cyclopean. So I easily win the second game, I wont go into it but it was you know, the control tomato with Zaborg, with some goodies mixed in and some ECon abuse. The third game starts and this guy nukes his hand pretty good with some bad decisions and overextending. He hits me with a Cyber and a GAF direct (No pink). I then easily take control with a DDA and a Don. He has a set card, what do you know, here comes a Cyber Dragon followed by the one card left in his hand- Cybernetic Cyclopean.
In case you didnt know what this terrible card does, I'll tell you. Its a 1400 machine thats effect is when you have no cards in your hand, you gain 1000 attack points. So I have to go with setting monsters to stave death, waiting for an answer to come as I was at 2100 lp with a cyber and a 2400 breathing down my neck. So the next turn I set ring, and during his draw phase I ring the Cyclopean while he is at 1400 so I dont die. Well the Exiled that was played 3 times in that game comes back with that one card he drew during the draw phase, premature burial, and he swings for game. He pumps his fists and then kinda offers me his hand in a "good game" sort of way. I was like man, what a sack. He says Cybernetic Cyclopean is my favorite card, I love winning because of him.. I said, oh, so you like having to play off the top of your deck, and having no cards in your hand? Because in every game, your opponent controls your hand and you are drawing dead? Hes like no man, I just found that alot of times I have no cards in my hand when my opponent beats me. I then tell him that in YuGiOh 95%, or more, of the time the person with the biggest hand size wins. Well Thats how that went.
I won my next round when my opponent dropped but the TO didnt see the check to drop box. So a guy asks me to play Yugioh for fun and I tell him I dont really play for fun, almost never. He asks and begs and this is a guy I've played against before and hes an ok deckbuilder and a nice guy so I figured, sure, ill give it a try. Well I go first and a Conf and the guy has two Call of the Haunteds in his opening hand. I exploded laughing. He was like "Fun game right?" I was like, let me see that deck. Well apparently in fun games you can run 3x copies of COTH. I laughed and said, thats why I dont play Yugioh for fun!
The morals of this story:
1) Cybernetic Cyclopean sucks.
2) Having no cards in your hand sucks.
3) Getting paired down REALLY sucks.
4) YuGiOh is almost never fun, but is sometimes funny.
5) Showers are good tech.
The duelist in question was actualy able to thwart me too, simply because the deck I had attempted to test out that night, while physicaly there, seemed to still be back at home. A player with an original deck ended up with a decent record and another original deck ended up winning the whole thing, so last night at least left me with a good taste in my mouth (especialy sense my deck had left such a bad one). Originality wins over all, pritty awsome huh?
liek the article but i love yugioh and i havnt messed around wiht vs (for some rerason i dont kno cause i love comic books) and go COLUMBUS IM AT ALL THE YUGIOH / VS EVERNTS AT VETS
Well, showers are good, but Cybernetic Cyclopean and Mechanical Hound are better.... you said that people with bigger hands win, but what if you're facing aganist Mechanical hound and Cybernetic Cyclopean, with both players at zero hand(there are cards that drop hand smaller, and spells doesn't count)?
Seriously, after SJC Philly, I was thinking of renting a dealer's table just to sell Deodorant, mouthwash, body spray, and gum. And why do I get paired with all the stinkies? I died everytime I had to go check the pairings list. It wasn't only because 500 + people crowded arounf 6 sheets of paper... oh no, it was more because 75% of them stunk!
I didnt like the article personally, It seemed like just a bunch of complaining about what sounded to be a cookie cutter deck losing.
Cybernetic Cyclopean is good, because even the best players run out of hands at points and it really depends on the deck. Some decks arent all draw. His sounded more beatdown (aggro) cyber cyclopeon owns in beat down, and btw its a beast-warrior not a machine. If it was a machine it would be so busted.
Anyways I would of shook the guys hand for beating me with a card that doesnt see much play and is underestimated.
Hi my username is ra4 and I hope I don'tseem stupid but you might try to add more cards that have you draw more cards and it would help a little. I have quite a bit of experience with tourenaments. And cybercenetic cyclopian is not stupid it is just &%#$@ annoying! Also to last longer without cards Use trap hole and spellbinding circle. Also you can use Cyber stien to summon Thousand eyes Restrict from your fusion deck. If you have an arggument or think I'm being a you-know-what E-mail me at [email protected]!
I'll will help with more strategies if you want but you probably just think I'm being nosey.
