If player A activates Smashing Ground against Player B's monster, but player B activates Attack Reflector Unit to put out a new monster, does Player A's Smashing Ground fizzle or destroy the new monster?
If player A activates Smashing Ground against Player B's monster, but player B activates Attack Reflector Unit to put out a new monster, does Player A's Smashing Ground fizzle or destroy the new monster?
After Attack Relector Unit resolves, Smashing Ground will still destroy whatever monster has the highest ATK (most likely Cyber Barrier Dragon).
Smashing Ground does not target and will destroy whatever card fits the bill when time comes to resolve it.
Smashing Ground does not destroy anything until the card actually resolves, nor are you able to select anything, which is why the card does not target.
So even if the opponent were to chain something that would get rid of the card you HOPED would get destroyed, Smashing Ground would always resolve and destroy something unless...
A.) There are no monsters left on the opponent's field
B.) There are no face-up monsters left on the opponent's field
C.) It gets negated
...only then will it ever resolve without effect.
So, in this case, if you used Smashing Ground and the opponent had a Cyber Dragon and a face-up, let's say, Big Shield Gardna and the opponent chains with Attack Reflector Unit, Tributing Cyber Dragon for the cost...
Chain Link 1: Smashing Ground
Chain Link 2: Attack Reflector Unit; Cyber Dragon Tributed for cost
No other responses, so chain resolves.
Chain Link 2: Cyber Barrier Dragon is Special Summoned from the hand or Deck in face-up Attack or Defense Position
Chain Link 1: Smashing Ground destroys the face-up monster with the highest DEF on the opponent's side of the field, which would be Cyber Barrier Dragon (2800 DEF) instead of the Big Shield Gardna (2600 DEF).
Chain Link 1: Smashing Ground destroys the face-up monster with the highest DEF on the opponent's side of the field, which would not be Cyber Barrier Dragon (2800 DEF) instead of the Big Shield Gardna (2600 DEF).
Huh?!!
This is what happens when things get a little unnecessarily long winded....
That's what I thought, but I was told different while dueling. I was the player with Smashing Ground. I still won handily, but I didn't want to fight it. Thanks again to everyone.:)
One thing to remember is that there is a SIGNIFICANT difference between when a card effect activates and when a card resolves. What really gets crazy is that it can also depend on where the physical card is between activation and resolution of some effects.
If you're curious about all this, I wrote an article about it a while back over at the City of Gamers. I just re-posted it here to see if it may help some others out...
