This is not a very good card. It may be a double breaker, but who cares? Lately there have beed soooo many cards with a double breaker ability. There also a few spells that can do the job. (ex: gazer, snake atk, blaze cannon, etc...). You must also fork over a shield for it to atk, and not being able to use its trigger ability if it has one.
You can find much better creatures instead of General Dark Fiend. Its just another card that looks pretty good, until people read its downside. Not that great, IMO
I say General Dark Fiend is decent, maybe a bit below average a most. He only cost 5 mana so he can get out faster than most other double breakers. I wouldn't attack with him unless you have a free shot at their shields or you really have to get rid a a tapped creature. Overall, there are better cards you could play but there are worse cards too.
its an average card but, it kinda sucks. lose a shield everytime you attack and what if they block? you lose a shield for nothin. thats why it's not that good.
Of all the 5 mana double breakers with drawbacks, at this point General has to be the worst or very close to it. Losing a shield is a bit too much for mono-Darkness and most other builds running Darkness. You can recover the shield if it was a creature (or a spell if you run Light with Darkness) through recursion--but why bother. As others have said, best to attack with it when you don't have any shields or when your opponent has no blockers out.
I think if you want it in your deck, put one in. That way when you dont draw three of it over a span of a game, or just use it for mana. The point is, if you only got one, you can use it when it counts, kinda like those trump cards always on card based tv shows, like yugioh...((lol)) Well, if you opponent has two shields left, and you have it out already... well, the situation speaks for itself.
